Pool Lesson: Breaking A 9-Ball Rack Two Ways

  • Hey everybody! Need some help breaking a 9-ball rack? Then have a look at two different ways I break a 9-ball rack!
    I don't bother trying to make the 9-ball on the break, as that relies more on luck. Unless, you purposely set the rack up with gaps in certain locations to increase the chances of the 9-ball to go in on the break.

    I've been playing pool since I was a small child. You know what you're talking about, and it's refreshing. Everyone talks about these patterns, but nobody bothers to explain which direction you need to adjust towards based on the result of the break. It's always shoot here and hope for that, and little else. This no-nonsense presentation rivals any pro video I've seen, even including some of the greats.

    Using a Magic Rack and watching your instructive video, I have improved my break ratio by at least 30%. Just nailing the wing ball, with a shot on the 1. Thanks for your carefully developed and explained videos.

    I just tried the second one (where the wing ball goes in, and one ball goes up the table for possible position) and I wasn’t sure which ball I should aim for, but landed on it being the outer ball opposite side. Have to watch this again, but I was consistently getting the wing ball and one was often makeable. Thanks so much for this!

      Replying to myself, but was at the pool hall today again, played nine ball with a Buddy, I sank the ball in the left corner every time but one, and that time the ball hung on the edge. One ball was not always makeable, but it was always up table as lil’ Chris showed here. This is an amazing tip!

    Love this video. I come back to reference it a lot.
    If you were in a tournament where you have to "break from the box" you wouldn't be able to use the second break.
    I've been using the first break and aim to hit the 1ball a little thicker so it hits above the side pocket and sets up for a shot in the corner. Similar to the second break 1ball position.
    I practice the first break more. Because of the break box rule, and it's easier for me to control the cue ball. Seems to work well.
    Thanks for all the videos!

    I mostly do my break with a lot of topspin at the top of the rack ball ( 8-ball and 9-ball ) and I cannot complain about the results I have with that but I will try you’re methods also and then I will use the one that I have the best results with.

    • @bosseeriksson1403
      @bosseeriksson1403 Před 4 lety

      With a lot of top spin you often pot a ball or two but you lose a lot of cue ball control. I prefer to try to break, and make, the 1-ball and keep the cueball as close to the center of the table as possible to give me a reasonable chance on the next ball.
      Easiest way to accomplish that, imho, is to hit the CB at the center, or just a little below center.

    I was using the second break technique and getting good results, except for one thing. Many tournaments here have the three balls in the kitchen (or total pocketed + in the kitchen must be at least three) and I haven’t often made a legal break with that technique under those rules. Going to try the first break (seemed like it had better chance) but it would be great if you made a video with advice on nine ball breaks with the kitchen rule in effect?

    I've finally gotten my 8-ball break down to something I feel comfortable with. My 9-ball break is still very lackluster so I really need to work on it. I like option number 2. Watching the pros play they always seem to sink the 1 ball pretty consistently but not knowing where the 2 is going to be I don't really like that option.
    Is it still this consistent/predictable when not using a magic rack? And does it matter how hard you hit the cue ball? My 8 ball break is very powerful but I get the idea that my 9 ball break shouldn't be.

Do you have tips to help make a shot better on an uneven table? They aren't going to ever fix their table. I grew up shooting pool. I got really good. I've been out of it though now for a long time and play at holidays only but I am now watching videos to see what I can re-teach myself so I can impress. Myself mostly. I am terrible at banking. My son who didn't grow up playing except on an app can bank better than I can. He just knows how to do it. I don't grasp the concepts he tries to teach me about the diamonds and hit here it goes there etc... also I'm not very good at too much green between. Any tips are appreciated. Thank you.

    • @LilChrisPoolPlayer
      @LilChrisPoolPlayer  Před 5 lety +1

      Do you drive your cue down into the table, or are you breaking off of a rail and your bridge hand is under your cue?
      The cue ball flying off the table is due to the cue ball being in the air when it hits the rack. This is normally cause by an elevated cue when the cue ball is hit.
      Try to have your cue as leveled as possible when you break, otherwise pull back some of the power.

    • @LilChrisPoolPlayer
      @LilChrisPoolPlayer  Před 3 lety

      The butt of the cue CAN have a difference on the cue because of the weight and balance point. Having said that, if you're "fully" adjusted to your playing cue then getting just the shaft should be fine.

    • @XFS540
      @XFS540 Před 3 lety

      @@LilChrisPoolPlayer Well the Viking Crush cue is listed as being made with “aged” hard rock maple as opposed to their playing cues that are made with regular hard rock maple or birdseye. Assuming all other factors are the same like weight and balance point, does the “aged” maple of the butt make that big of a difference, or is it just some marketing b.s.?

Giving your lesson here on consistent ball patterns and predicting where they will end up, what would be the difference if you broke in a low humidity environment as opposed to a high humidity environment... Earl Strickland is an absolute Nazi when it comes to this kinda stuff. Wondering what your thoughts are dude...

    • @LilChrisPoolPlayer
      @LilChrisPoolPlayer  Před 3 lety +1

      I wouldn't know how to answer this as I haven't been a a low humidity environment to compare how the balls will react off of one another or off the rails. Nonetheless, if they re-acted differently than expected, it still would be up to me to be able to quickly adjust to the conditions or just stop playing in that type of environment.

      @@LilChrisPoolPlayer Yeah true. A recent 9-Ball tournament I was watching a few matches of Earl basically was annoyed that the table he was playing on had so many audience members around it because he reckoned because there were so many audience members around his table it affected the way it played because everyone's breathing made the humidity level skyrocket... It's interesting stuff.... I play guitar and I know how high humidity levels can affect the tone of an acoustic guitar so maybe billiard tables all suffer from this same kinda thing being that they are primarily made out of wood just like guitars are....

    Does this work the same way on a 7' table? I am guessing so since the the tables are scaled down equally. On my 7' table other balls seem to bump the wing ball before it gets to the corner.

    • @LilChrisPoolPlayer
      @LilChrisPoolPlayer  Před 3 lety

      This works on a 7', 8', and 9' table that I've seen with a template rack. With a regular rack, you're not guaranteed a perfect rack, so you won't always get consistent results. Whenever a regular rack is used, I primarily try to make the 1-ball into the side pocket of the break.

      @LilChrisPoolPlayer  Před 3 lety

      @@GameboyZoneRocks Yes, it allows you to understand how a rack will truly spread when broken consistently.
      Now, I also recommend practicing with regular racks too because not all players like using template racks. With regular racks, your primary practice should be trying to make the head ball on the break.

      That requires the rack to be rigged with gaps at specific areas. The location and size of the gaps determine where to place the cue ball and how much power to use. This is something that is not ideal for a match and is frowned upon if exploited.

      If you're not using a template rack, then you have be real careful when you're using a regular rack and rack the balls as tight as you can with little to no gaps in between the balls. After that, you have to make sure how the cue ball strikes the 1-ball during the break. The more you cut the 1-ball, the less energy that's transfer into the rack which results in less of a spread.

    One day I was playing a friend and I made the 9-ball three times in a row. I played another guy and I made it two times in a row and he wanted to spot the nine after that. I told a friend which didn't play very good pool where to break and he made the 9-ball three times in a row on me. Then I played a friend of mine and of course this 10 ball went in the same pocket all three times never touch the ball of course it was in the two pockets that people consider not a legal pocket. All using the same break. of course 10 ball used to not be that way just like the Fargo way. they even play one pocket today where if you make a ball on the break it doesn't count. all I can say is I would challenge any pool player in the world to make a 10 ball on the break on a big table in those two pockets that don't count and they added probably 10 brakes they're lucky if they do it once. I don't know why they got that stupid ruling. And guess what where did I break the same place where you break right toward that ball in the middle as if you're pushing that one threw that ball. that is pretty strong I didn't even get to that point when I started commenting before I just did. that is the place where I made the 10 ball three times in a row that same type of brake and the 9-ball the five times of course more than just that. this is the ultimate break not from the rail. I just don't cut it I go right through it. see you're playing with that English so you can make the one ball which I don't care about making the one ball. I would push the one right through the two ball with no English dead center. and it may not be exactly on the 2nd dot or diamond On both places it could be a hair to the right to be a dead straight contact if there weren't balls in between. as a matter of fact I know it's a tad bit to the right.
