  • South Wales Rail Action, with a trip from Cardiff to Cwmbran. 17 and 20 Aug 2020
On 17th August 2020, the Welsh Government and Transport for Wales lifted the travel restrictions which limited public transport to essential travel only. Starting with a short interlude at Cardiff Central station, noting a few passenger trains and the general scene, I was able take the train to Cwmbran, with a few observations on the journey.
Then to Bishton Crossing, on the South Wales Main Line east of Newport, on a windy afternoon of 20th August. GWR passenger trains predominated the action but three freight trains also made an appearance.

Hi Les some great catches you caught . Those GWR trains look like our Amtrak Acela trains . Thanks for sharing .

Really nice catches. I wish the USA had a more advance passenger train system. It would be a blast to ride I think.
    Thanks for sharing. Dave

A nice collection of trains and views. I really liked that 175 (and the 170 later)... it had a German feel to it. lol Of course, I will always enjoy GWR liveries on HSTs, especially the ubiquitous 800s that I love or the 43s.

Thanks Anthony. That her green is subtle but but gets boring after a while. Some of the earlier GWR liveries were brighter

Good one Leslie...I had another trip to Cardiff today as well..and there were a few spotters around the platform ends. Including a chap and his mate from Swindon. All the best.

I'll give it another week and then maybe take the train to Newport. I fancy a couple of places west of Cardiff to get some speed. Did you see the blue 60 on today's These Roberson tanks?

Hi Les, great stuff again, I love seeing the view points of other enthusiasts at Cardiff and Newport having spent quite a bit of time at those two locations last year. Perhaps you could explain the reason for the car horns honking at Bishton crossing and perhaps even show the tunnel/underpass in a future video. Glad you took a train ride too.
    Regards, David.

David I filmed the crossing in use and the approaches to the underbridge in my video is 6-10 July, my first visit to Bishton.

I'll walk through with the camera on next time I'm there.

@@LeslieGilpinRailways Hi Les, I do recall that but it seemed brief at the time and I don't recall an explanation of the honking. There is a similar underpass/crossing at Ely but it is two lane with straight approaches so no need for the honking. Take care, David.

Some great shots there Leslie. May I suggest you get a radar speed gun and check the speed of those trains. It would be interesting to know. Regards Michael

It would be interesting Michael. As far as I know the main line speed limit is 90mph with 75 on the relief lines. However class 150, 153 and Pacers are limited to 75mph. I'd need to check the freight speeds but certainly the heavier ones are limited to 60.

So maybe you could make sure they are sticking to the speed limits. Great stuff Leslie. Cheers Michael

I thought we might have seen some of the same trains. That tune is well known to me, I remember steam locomotives drivers sometimes play it on loco whistles.
