I'm an Ystrad boy born, and a Nelson boy bred, footage is a little bit before my time, but the line to cwmbargoed is still used for the ffos y fran open cast, all 66's now tho. I was born in brynmynach, the junction onto the Rhymney valley line passed the bottom of my street, got fond memories watching the 37s going past all day long, great footage, just wish i had better memories of it all

The camera work and shots in this video are inspiration.. I love the way the zooming and panning has been done - so difficult to get right. Will watch this a few times. Thank you

In the 80's a single class 37 could haul thousands of tons. Now they serve by doubling with another 37, with a 3rd loco at the back to shunt a few passenger carriages

Great video and subject matter. Good to see the 37s in the Welsh coal heartland. A superb record of a now long gone period of history.
    Really enjoyed. Thank you.

    Absolutely wonderful Mike.
A couple of bits of additional information if I may. At 11:44 the train of MEAs is most likely from Taff Merthyr running to Alexandra Dock Junction for Newport Docks. The MEAs were introduced for this traffic I'm told. The train at 20:54 is coming off the Penallta branch.
    Best wishes,
    Chris.

Epic video footage, Mike! Well done 👍. You’ve earned yourself another subscriber, just joined I did. Regards from a fellow 37 tractor and Welsh fan... Caleb from South Australia. Stay healthy. Cheers 🙂

Signal box still there in Neath for the valleys, although nothing goes towards Cwmgrach now. Neath abbey wharf has gone as well. The swing bridge is still there though.

Awesome video love the shots at lime kiln box I live very close to the crossing here in risca it was criminal when the box was demolished when the line was upgraded to the passenger line the crossing is still busy controlled by park Jct but a class 170 is no match for a 37 in the valleys

If only we knew about You Tube " back then" how many more clips would have been preserved. I have over 600 mini DV tales and 300 VHS tapes, so more to come when I have time to edit

Interesting to see Deep Navigation when it was still operational. I know someone who’s old man used to work there.

Only Cwmbargoed has a daily service in 2023 ( If we're lucky) and it can be an hour either side of timed arrival/departure. Thanks for watching
