He was so brave and his story is horrible... Humans confound me, we're capable of so much good but also unrivalled evil and I really don't understand it. I also don't understand why anybody would hurt such a charming doggo.

People tend to be immediately scared when something goes wrong. In my work, where I handle horses every day, people tend to use A LOT of unnecessary things just because a horse is too active or hard to handle. They start to get nervous, and horses don't like that as much as other animals do. It's absolutely normal for a horse to be with a character. Jump, nip, pull it's ears back. It's not always a sign of aggressive behavior. It certainly becomes one when people act too emotional.

Trauma reaction. Humans also fight, flight or freeze but dogs being a diff species read smell, sight, sound then touch. Sense of smell by far is most dominant and 10K - 100K stronger then dogs.

He’s so happy at the end, I think he realized he was safe with you. He was wagging his tail. And his expression was very relaxed and trusting.
This type of aggression can sometimes be an indicator of pain (he's reactive when moved or when switching positions). Even if it was initially caused by a traumatic event, it may be exacerbated by physical pain. It would be a good idea to take Yogi to see a vet for a thorough check-up and if possible pain trial (giving him short-term pain therapy to see if it will affect the aggression - if it does, it's related to pain.)
I agree. I would not be surprised if his demeanor changed after getting those talons cut, they must have been extremely painful and would explain why he doesn't like being moved around or having his feet manipulated.
He probably got yanked around before they decided to kick him. Maybe he was being stubborn and not listening to them. Maybe he was already growling at them or didn't understand due to age, or inconsistency/poor training. Whatever the reason, there had to be something that pissed off the person or dog prior to the kick. There are people out there that only like dogs if they're obedient, and when they aren't, they get unreasonably angry and hateful when the dog doesn't do what they tell them.
Imagine how relieved his people were when he walked out without the muzzle and with a good report card.
I wonder if the muzzle isnt part of the problem. He only seemed to show signs of agression while wearing it and be mostly relaxed without. Still its of course safety first!

@@Daniel-rd6ste muzzle is insanely small for this dog. Muzzles, when properly conditioned/trained and fitted, have no effect on the dog whatsoever. Mine plays, drinks, takes treats, sleeps, barks, pukes, pants, yawns, etc. in his. This poor dog can't do most of those. If the dog needed to puke, it wouldn't be able to, and could choke and die. If the dog was overheating or stressed, it wouldn't be able to fully pant to cool or calm down. This is very dangerous. Quite often for grooming and vet visits, muzzles that are too small are used for maybe 5-10 minutes max. This is an 8 minute video, but probably not an 8 minute process. Fortunately the dog did get a break for a bit.
But yeah, the muzzle is likely quite uncomfortable, potentially increasing irritation.

I have to say this must be one of the most impressive videos I've seen of yours. I have had dogs most of my life, and like to think I can read their body language well, but you are so spot on with the subtleties in their behaviour and understanding their triggers. Really brave and professional.
Always stay on the cautious side though as you do already - professionals in any career can grow complacent
My sister adopted an "unadoptable" dog and not only did things turn out great, that dog is super smart and listens and responds to commands by anyone in his pack and he loves to play frisbee! Turns out he's the greatest dog ever!!!

All the positive reinforcement and gentle patience must have helped alleviate some of his fear. Poor pupper. If you don’t like dogs, just walk away. Don’t abuse them.
i agree, unless the dog is hurting or killing another person/animal, you should never hurt them. I hope that the person who kicked him faced consequences for their action.

There’s no such thing! It’s just how bad is your allergy and how much hair does the dog have. All depends on those factors.

The error is that people think it means they're 100% not allergic to hypoallergenic dogs.
Doodles, which come from the French word, Les Dooodles, is hypoallergenic on Tuesdays and every other Thursday. I would go into more detail but you need a good understanding of 19th century pre-industrial German.

Yeah you can tell as the groom progresses that he's a well behaved dog with some issues regarding specific things. And aren't we all like that too? You bet I would be wary of strangers if someone kicked me in the head when I was young. Poor boy...

The dog is not aggressive. I wish as a society we would start using words in a literal fashion. This dog is the literal definition of defensive. In 40 Years of rescue and Rehabilitation, specializing in dogs labeled as aggressive, I've yet to meet an aggressive dog. Literally every dog that I've had come in with that label has been wrongly labeled. Animals aren't aggressive. They are defensive. Yes, there are exceptions to every rule. But, as a whole, animals don't display aggression. The definition of words are extremely important and they are there for a reason. It is time for us as a species to do better and start using words as they are meant to be used. Using the aggression label on animals can cost them their lives. Simply because some human has labeled them with the word that does not literally Define their situation. Every animal I've taken in that has been deemed aggressive has only been defensive because of something some stupid human did to them

@@streghewitch77aggression IS a defensive mechanism. There is a difference when the animal is just defensive, those usually only use scare tactics and run away at the right moment, and an animal that attacks first when it's scared that someone will do it before and hurt them.
I do understand tho. You just need different tactics for different scared animals. You can't just let yourself into the room with an aggressive animal. Defensive animals tend to be fore fragile and safe for handling and taming
I appreciate the fact that the owners of this dog brought him in with a muzzle already. Due to the dog’s past experiences, which were extremely negative no wonder why the dog is reactive and has fear aggression when certain conditions are met. There’s something to be said for responsible dog owners, and this is an example of that.
i bring mine in with a muzzle because hes funny with every other person in existence, but apparently he never needs his muzzle at the groomers 🤣
I completely agree. I just wish they had a muzzle with enough pant room so he felt more comfortable. Him clawing at it made me sad. He's already stressed, he needs to be able to pant. This muzzle also isn't bite proof so if he has a bite history, he really should have a basket muzzle that is bite proof and would allow him to have pant room.
BearBear, Our sweet little senior Westie mix is reactive to dogs larger than him. About 7-8 years ago he was attacked by a free range behemoth dog. I had to pull his head out of the other dog’s mouth. I don’t know how he didn’t lose an eye or part of his ear. I really thought that ear was a goner. He doesn’t lunge or bite but I’m afraid his defensive barking will start something with new acquaintances. He has ptsd. He’s just a teddy bear.
Nah nah yall dog lovers don’t understand how dangerous a dog can be. We all have at least one friend that owns a dog that barks uncontrollably. I dont hate dogs dogs are very cute but DOGS ARE NOT THAT SAFE. Ik dogs should be loved and cared for when they’re unstable but human lives are more important. A dog can easily bit off a person body part if it wants to. Yall dog owners should know how to handle dogs before getting one. The muzzle was essential
@@kkkharen 🤨 nah, as a dog lover, this aint it. I advocate for muzzle training all dogs. Because I want to set them up for success. Dogs can be unpredictable when stressed, in pain, unwell, ect. The fact I acknowledge this and respect the damage that a dog can cause, does not mean I love dogs any less.

Yogi was a ROCKSTAR!! It is partly because of how patient, calm, and understanding you were with him… But also definitely because his new (amazing and responsible) parents are helping and working with him to overcome his traumas. You showed the absolute best you are as an animal groomer and he showed with experience, behavior therapy, and more, that he can and will be the best dog he can be!!
My neighbors are dog trainers and always have Doodles in. They told me “Doodles basically keep us in business” 😂😂
I wonder if it is the owners or the breeders... Then again, I have noticed that Golden retrievers do have a sharpness (compared to Labs) and poodles may have a bit of nerves - not the ideal combination? Where I think Goldens and Standard Poodles are just amazing breeds.
When you're dealing with larger, very smart dogs who might be kept by inexperienced owners, professional training would likely be the best option. The real problem would be owners not providing that training, either at home or otherwise.
good to see doodle owners are responsible enough to get their dogs trained. Unlike a LOT of purebred dog owners
@@elinamakela8435 likely a mix. We have an F1b (mom was a Golden Doodle 50/50 mix, and dad was standard poodle) golden doodle. They are super smart and learn very quickly (which is both good and bad if the owner doesn't understand what they're learning from us). We chose our's because we wanted a non-purebred dog who would have fewer health issues (from overbreeding of purebreds...so mutt vigor, essentially), but with a furry coat that is good for sensory seekers to feel (we pretty much all have sensory processing disorder, and 3 out of the 5 of us have anxiety...feeling the soft fur/hair can be helpful and calming), and also our's isn't small which was good because we wanted an oversized teddy bear. She proved to be all of those things and more. I clicker trained her myself, but she was also quickly house broken by observing our older (now gone) dog which taught her how to ask to go outside. We do have her professionally groomed, though I have groomed her myself (I just don't like the hairy mess, and don't have a good place in the house to do it)...and the pro is obviously better lol. She is a picky eater (poodle) and is scared of the unknown (not aggressive though)...she barked at a pallet of bricks in our backyard once...it was an invader and she totally failed as she backed away barking and came into the house. But she is every visitor's bff and as far as she is concerned, they are all here to see her.

I love the shaving of the paw pads! I always refer to this as the return of traction control, especially in doggos like Yogi who have not had a groom in a while.

thanks for debunking the “doodles are hypoallergenic” myth. i’m allergic to dogs and i can’t even count how many times ppl have dismissed my cautiousness with “oh don’t worry my dog is hypoallergenic”.
do you know what hypoallergenic means? hypo- does not mean none allergenic... people are dense.
And even if a dog DOESN'T shed doesn't mean it's safe for people with allergies, most of us are allergic to the dander (skin and saliva) which exist regardless of whether or not a dog sheds
@@dissentinel8 Yes this. Something people don't understand is that these things build up in the environment - dander is all over floors and furniture. My allergies are sooo much better in a house that regularly vacuums floors and/or doesn't let pets on the furniture.

I have a goldendoodle and a lot of people who are allergic to dogs walked up and petted him. There were numerous different ways they reacted. Some reacted like it was any other dog and still got the full reaction, some partly and some none at all. So it depends. I very much agree with you tho, it doesn’t mean that it won’t trigger an allergic reaction

When dog’s nails are this long and black, how do you know where to cut without cutting the quick? This is something that after owning 3 large dogs with black nails I have not quite mastered lol. Love the video, your patience and great observations about his triggers and body language really helped him out!

The way the groom progressed, it looks like he would really start to thrive and grow if he could see you on a regular basis. He definitely grew to trust you as it went on.
You can tell he gets more and more relaxed with you throughout the groom! He's honestly a good boy, just has some understandable issues after having a horrible experience with strangers. Humans can really suck sometimes, but we can be really cool sometimes too and hopefully Yogi is understanding that better now

I have a 20 month old Goldendoodle and thanks to wonderful CZcams channels like this one, i was more than prepared to raise him. Been brushing him often which mean he has no mats and also means he's very used to been groomed and is such a good boy, even at such young age. And everyone always tells me how handsome and cute he is 😄

My aunt and uncle rescued a dog who was 6lbs and would scream if you tried to pick her up because her previous owner broke her ribs, kicking her. She could’ve fit inside a purse and didn’t even have teeth big enough to hurt anyone if she wanted to yet somebody was still cruel to her. You can trust dogs way more than you can trust a human.

I have a very anxious dog. She barks at people she doesn’t know (especially men), has never been to a groomer bc she thinks brushes will kill her, and is afraid of flies and the milk jug. She yelps if even a breeze touches her ears and always looks like she’s either high or going to cry. She’s an absolute goober and we love her. This good boi reminds me of her.

Seen a few “omg put it down” comments, which make me really bummed. This dog warns her very clearly by growling when he’s nervous and upset. There is no sudden lunge-snap like some truly dangerous dogs do. He was honestly better than a lot of groomer cases in her channel.
I spent almost a decade training dogs, only dealt with a few with severe fear aggression thankfully. It takes a lot of work and a LOT of treats, but dogs like this poor boy absolutely can become good, safe dogs. And it sounds like his owners are working hard to make him safe and happy again.
"Someone who didn't like dogs". Why do I feel that really means "my off-leash, poorly trained "doodle" ran up to someone who was either defending their on-leash dog, or was terribly afraid of dogs, and completely overwhelmed them."?
Maybe that's just my usual experience with most "doodles" and their owners.

I'd imagine recording grooms like this is also a good way to keep track of dogs like Yogi who have to be handled a particular way. A good tool even if you're not uploading them for others to view!
It also means if Yogi goes to a different groomer in future, his owners can say "go watch this girl with the dogs video she talks about him and you can see how he behaves during a groom"
That's exactly why she makes these videos I forgot which video she mentioned this at but yes she wants to show people how properly groom even those so called hard to groom dogs & cat's because it's all possible with the right techniques...
Having Vanessa as your dog's groomer is an absolute blessing! This remarkable individual possesses limitless patience and a wealth of expertise in her field. She truly deserves the highest praise and recognition! My aspiration is to have my future furry companion groomed by her. She's an absolute force to be reckoned with-powerful, passionate, and absolutely fabulous!

Aw, hearing that someone kicked this poor buddy for no reason makes me so sad. I also have a Goldendoodle, and he is the friendliest dog ever. It makes me want to hug both Yogi and my buddy boy. I'm so glad that you're helping him get groomed, since that's just a part of life for these dogs. Hopefully the experience is a positive one that can build for him.

I appreciate the parents being proactive with the muzzle but I think a bigger one would fit him better!
It looks like that one fits him well, but I agree that a different style muzzle with more room for him to pant or drink water while still muzzled would probably be better for Yogi when he's stressed.

To be fair its sometime a little hard to size things correctly around so much hair. But yeah i do think if they had periodically checked the muzzle they’d have noticed its a bit on the small size.
i've seen too many dogs rip an oversized muzzle off (he does try in the bath tub). the problem is keeping any muzzle on a dog for too long and she gave yogi breaks. better safe than sorry, a bite from a dog that size can break bones
This seemed totally the wrong size muzzle, Yogi couldn't open his mouth fully to pant in this one. I'm glad you took cues from his body language and gave him the opportunity to not have it on. Hopefully the owners take this info and work with it going forward.

I got teary eyed when you took the muzzle off because he wasn't reactive and so he didn't need it. Idk, like knowing this baby is traumatized and seeing how well you took care of him, and took your time to understand him made me emotional

He was so stressed for most of the groom but he still was so controlled. Your gentle handling was also really good. Hopefully he has more gentle grooming sessions like this ❤️ I cant believe he was so good for his face washing, even dogs without issues don't always like it.

Honestly he was a really good boy through out everything. I think the more he is able to trust someone outside his family after what happened to him, especially with someone who is calm and can read him like you were able to.
I understand his fear, I am 65 and the youngest of 7 children when I was a boy 5 or 6 we had a collie that would "Heel you" as a child I did not know that ,my sisters yelled Candy sic him get him etc.. Scared the hell out of me and even to this day a large dog even a little aggressive gets my attention and drags up old feelings, so that poor pup gets a hug from me and I appreciate your kindness
I've had some unfortuneate experiences with dogs. The first one was a family friends dog, who was agressive, pinned me behind a chair and was so agressive the family themselves had him put down by animal control. A few years later I was charged by a loose /stray dog and saved by a neighbor. There were other events. But I was just a child the first incident and I am only 5 feet tall so I have had a life time of being very selective of dogs that I meet. If I am already stressed, that ptsd will surge and I will even avoid the sweetest dogs. Still love them though!
Our Yorkie developed fear aggression after being attacked and "played with" by multiple large dogs. He was fine with other small dogs, and any cat that tolerated dogs. And he liked people, and adored kids! For a dog raised by tweens and adults, he would strain towards kids whenever he saw them on our walks.
Our Yorkie hates everyone. Worst thing that happened to him was he fell off a bed as a puppy and broke his arm.
@@ferretyluvsmall dogs are usually very scared of a much larger world around them. Very aware of that they can become aggressive aka "big dog syndrome" in hopes to keep from getting hurt. They don't always need a history of abuse to be mean little suckers. But they do need to feel secure to overcome it, and a sympathetic but firm trainer helps.
I’m sorry that happened. My little Yorkie loves going to the groomers. It is in the vets office. I never heard of a dog loving the vets office. She goes tomorrow and keeps going to the door because she heard us talking about it. I hope your furbaby out grows it’s fear.

One day he got out by accident and tried to attack a cane corso mix (sweet big fellow) who yeeted him like a newspaper. The owner was so apologetic… we’re like we get it, most dogs don’t like dogs coming at there face.
Owner looked suprised and said “small dog owners never apologize” me… small dogs are demons, they’re just in cute costumes

Literally 9 out of 10 doodles are crazy. We get all of the doodles no one else wants to groom.
I have a friend that is a vet tech, she says all of the poodle crosses are crazy, and most have health issues.
@@linslou1988 Almost every single one. We have a bernedoodle for puppy school and hes an absolute pain. He jumps up on me and bounces off of me. Like he's a bunny or something. The parents dont reinforce anything but omg I'm tired of being bruised all the time.
I totally agree. I worked with dogs as a groomer for years and in daycare/boarding for a few months. I'm done. I'm soooooo done. So many doodle owners are such Karen's too. And completely uneducated about ANY basic dog care. I'm so burnt out.
@@MrsFitzus Omg agreed! We straight up had people think we were abusing their doodles because they submissive peed. Then thought we didnt give them water but then they peed for 5 minutes after getting home.... common sense isnt a flower that grows in everyone's garden.

I have been bit more times by Doodles than any other dogs. I have a lot of friends who are and it boggles my mind that people leave their dogs so bad that you can scare them like a sheep with a giant dog pelt. A friend of mine did one the other day that was 30-lb when they remove the code and had bruising all over his body from where it was pulling on him

Smart of Yogi's owners to proactively get him used to wearing a muzzle! If they (or anyone else considering this tool) are reading, a properly-fitted muzzle would allow the dog to yawn, pant, and drink comfortably. There are many different sizes/shapes/materials to choose from.
When I heard about him being kicked in the head that almost set me off crying the whole way through the video. How and why anyone could do that to a living thing like that is beyond me, poor poor pooch, he did not deserve that to effect his whole life. I'm so sad for him, but so happy that you were able to groom him and treat him so wonderfully.

I'm sorry,I can't relate to wanting to cry or feel sad for this baby. All I feel is rage. All I want to know: Is the thing that found it necessary to kick this baby in the head,is that thing in a vegetative state after getting his/her head caved in. Or is that thing paralyzed from the neck down. Or is that thing no longer on this earth. All of these option's are completely appropriate to me. After the thing has "suffered" ,then I can give that baby all the lovens and help to make his life beautiful.

Your patience and understanding of dogs has been the reason I watch every one of your videos for a while now. You're an amazing dog groomer, ans I don't think many go into your profession with the same enthusiasm that you have.

Regardless of what has happened to him, he knows who he can trust. You can tell he started to trust you after a while
Yesss, dogs sense if a person is fearful. Yogie learned very quikly you were no threat to him, it showed in his body language. I must say I expected Yogie to be more "complicated" but instead he was pretty tame. A entire year of no grooming is quite a very long time. I love a challenge & was so far lucky when a fearful dog with issues comes in. I always make the time talking, petting the dog to establish some of his/her trust in me & it works. You did the usual awsome job Vanessa❣🐾

Yogi got the Groomer he needed. He's young so I hope training, love and activity will solve his fears. I'm amazed, again, at Vanessa's expertise in identifying an animals needs and requirements. From the coat to the emotions, Vanessa is on the job and helping a needy dog/cat ! 🐕🐕🐕🦺🐕🦺 Good boy Yogi !
Never before met a doodle that wasn't sweet as pie 🐽 My house dog is an Affenpoo. They are great dogs.
That muzzle is so tight, he looks a lot happier without it. The super long nails made me wonder if he is walked properly. He is a good doggo, hope he becomes a regular with you
I have a fear aggressive dog, and Yogi may not get all the walks he needs because the owner is afraid he will bite a dog or person. While training a fear aggressive dog I believe you are supposed to avoid the triggers at first, such as walks that pass by other dogs. It turns out that my dog snarls at other dogs while with me, but not with a dog walker. So she is professionally walked several times a week, but we will never be able to go back to the dog park where I spent many happy hourswith my other dogs.
@ruthbrewer466 I've wondered if dogs are "protecting" their owner when they do that? Or resource guarding? I'd like to know why some dogs do that.
