First world cup I remember being allowed to stay up late to watch despite England not qualifying. All of us kids in the park that summer had our socks rolled down and claimed to be Kempes . Looking at it now the role of Daniel Passarella is underrated. He was also an essential pice of this team winning.
@MD Indeed, though I didn't see him play in 1986 he was part of the supporting cast. A fantastic defender even when he wasn't that tall. He is still revered in Italy... he had such a great shot and scored many goals from outside the box. I certainly consider him among the very top in his position.

Argentina was a great team. Kempes and Fillol, their best players perhaps. Pasarella, Bertoni, Houseman and Luque also stood out. The Netherlands were a great rival, an excellent team that left a deep mark on football history despite not having won a championship title.

Then Argentina-Hungary, Argentina-France, Argentina-Italy (I remember that night everyone in the stadium was saying we should loose that game to avoid Germany and Netherlands in the 2nd round, then we lost 1-2). and then I went to see Netherlands-Italy and Brasil-Italy, both great games with great goals. Rivelinho and Dirceao were amazing.

1st time I had watching colored TV was final match between Argentina Vs Netherlands. I still remember that day on TV with small screen size I was 10 yrs old.
They did not show when Johnny Rep hit the post close to the 90th minute. I saw this on closed-circuit TV in New York's Madison Square Garden in front of over 20,000 viewers and dare I say, it was exciting as being at the actual game with the crowd's enthusiasm.
It was not Johnny Rep, it was Rob Rensenbrink. But indeed, I also expected to see that on this video. And the Dutch would have no less deserved the World Cup.

I saw that game in black and white TV, we didn't have a TV even then. Remember buying my first clour TV in 82 too watch the world cup tournament, I have been a Argentina fun for the past 44 years. Grew up in a house hold with only Brazil supporters, also the entire village. But my favorite time was Maradona Era. If I had to hang out with one man in the entire world it will be Maradona. My he RIP.
I have to admit, that Kempes ruined my life back then. I was watching the final at Torremolinos in hotel at age of 12 and I was fan of Holland. I'm not Dutch, but I love the Dutch football.
All us English were cheering for Holland. They deserved a World Cup win and this match more than any. Luck was not on their side. Cruyff decided not to go which was a huge loss to them and so many missed chances to score. Mario Kempis of Argentina was incredibly skilful. When Holland hit the post in the last seconds we were gutted. Argentina as the world knows got to the final after the corrupt game against Peru but the ticker tape in all their matches left its mark on the 1978 tournament.
We, in the Netherlands, said that even Rensenbrink had scored, never would win this final and the ref would add just so much extra time until Argentina scored the equalizer. The Junta had a lot of power at that time.

Man, WC final has been so defensive starting from World cup 1990. The scoreline really proof that. Before 1990, both sides werent afraid of attacking each other and both sides always scores. Back then you'd see 3-6 goals in WC final, these days you'd be lucky to see 1-2 goals. Apart from 98 France, its usually 0-0, 1-1 or it takes late penalty like in 90 final or late late strike like in last 2010 & 2014. Both sides are way too cautious these days and the final always anticlimatic regardless who win.

El mejor jugador de los años 70 junto a Cruiff y Bekembauer....goleador, botín de oro y campeón del mundo en Arg 1978.. Gran goleador de Argentina con Instituto en 1973, 74 con Rosario Central y 76 y 77 con Valencia en España. Nunca tuvo una tarjeta Roja "Fair PLAY 100%"; jugaba en toda la cancha y hasta evito un gol con la mano contra Polonia en el arco de Fillol. Kempes le dio la camiseta 10 a Maradona quien luego lo eclipso por la prensa y por transformarse en el mejor jugador de los años 80. Ambos fueron campeones en 1981 con River y Boca respectivamente. Para mi esta entre los 5 mejores de todos los tiempos. Messi, Maradona, Pele, Cruiff y Kempes...... EL MATADOR MARIO ALBERTO KEMPES....EL MEJOR GOL ES EL 2do a HOLANDA.
Soy de Valencia (España) y tengo 56 años y para muchos de nosotros Kempes ha sido el mejor jugador de la historia que ha vestido la camiseta valencianista. I was eleven then and watched the game at two o'clock in the night with my dad, outside on the balcony on a small black and white tv in Pakistan, where we lived. Fond memories of my father, big disappointment that the Dutch team lost, but that seems to be our fate. We were so close in 2010, but then Iniesta ended it all.

I saw this live aged 14, and everyone expected Holland to win even without Cruyff. Argentina wanted it more and Kempes was immense. The Dutch were great. Argentina were better.

First world cup I remember being allowed to stay up late to watch despite England not qualifying. All of us kids in the park that summer had our socks rolled down and claimed to be Kempes . Looking at it now the role of Daniel Passarella is underrated. He was also an essential pice of this team winning.
Not to mention Ossie Ardiles and the goalkeeper Fillol.
@MD Indeed, though I didn't see him play in 1986 he was part of the supporting cast. A fantastic defender even when he wasn't that tall. He is still revered in Italy... he had such a great shot and scored many goals from outside the box. I certainly consider him among the very top in his position.

Argentina was a great team. Kempes and Fillol, their best players perhaps. Pasarella, Bertoni, Houseman and Luque also stood out. The Netherlands were a great rival, an excellent team that left a deep mark on football history despite not having won a championship title.

Then Argentina-Hungary, Argentina-France, Argentina-Italy (I remember that night everyone in the stadium was saying we should loose that game to avoid Germany and Netherlands in the 2nd round, then we lost 1-2). and then I went to see Netherlands-Italy and Brasil-Italy, both great games with great goals. I have to admit, that Kempes ruined my life back then. I was watching the final at Torremolinos in hotel at age of 12 and I was fan of Holland. I'm not Dutch, but I love the Dutch football.
If you are 12 years you have superb memory. You will never forget this.
All us English were cheering for Holland. They deserved a World Cup win and this match more than any. Luck was not on their side. Cruyff decided not to go which was a huge loss to them and so many missed chances to score. Mario Kempis of Argentina was incredibly skilful. When Holland hit the post in the last seconds we were gutted. Argentina as the world knows got to the final after the corrupt game against Peru but the ticker tape in all their matches left its mark on the 1978 tournament.
We, in the Netherlands, said that even Rensenbrink had scored, never would win this final and the ref would add just so much extra time until Argentina scored the equalizer.
The Junta had a lot of power at that time.
Corrupt or not, the World Cup counts as 1 World Cup. keep cheering for multirracial Holland.

Man, WC final has been so defensive starting from World cup 1990. The scoreline really proof that.
Before 1990, both sides werent afraid of attacking each other and both sides always scores.
Back then you'd see 3-6 goals in WC final, these days you'd be lucky to see 1-2 goals. Apart from 98 France, its usually 0-0, 1-1 or it takes late penalty like in 90 final or late late strike like in last 2010 & 2014. Both sides are way too cautious these days and the final always anticlimatic regardless who win.

El mejor jugador de los años 70 junto a Cruiff y Bekembauer....goleador, botín de oro y campeón del mundo en Arg 1978.. Gran goleador de Argentina con Instituto en 1973, 74 con Rosario Central y 76 y 77 con Valencia en España. Nunca tuvo una tarjeta Roja "Fair PLAY 100%"; jugaba en toda la cancha y hasta evito un gol con la mano contra Polonia en el arco de Fillol. Kempes le dio la camiseta 10 a Maradona quien luego lo eclipso por la prensa y por transformarse en el mejor jugador de los años 80. Ambos fueron campeones en 1981 con River y Boca respectivamente. Para mi esta entre los 5 mejores de todos los tiempos. Messi, Maradona, Pele, Cruiff y Kempes...... EL MATADOR MARIO ALBERTO KEMPES....EL MEJOR GOL ES EL 2do a HOLANDA.
Soy de Valencia (España) y tengo 56 años y para muchos de nosotros Kempes ha sido el mejor jugador de la historia que ha vestido la camiseta valencianista. Cada vez que lo veo en televisión me levanto de mi silla! Su recuerdo es imborrable. Verlo ayer en el las imágenes del estadio en la final del mundial era emotivo. Gracias Kempes!

You should read the BBC article: "The story of the 1978 World Cup" As four-goal striker Leopoldo Luque said many years later: "With what I know now, I can't say I'm proud of my victory. But I didn't realise; most of us didn't. We just played football."
I read that...but it did not apply in the final...just how they got there.

it was obviously rigged. one of the most corrupt world cups in living memory. italia 34 as well with benito mouslini was another farce. both those teams 'won' their respective tournaments through match fixing.
I was eleven then and watched the game at two o'clock in the night with my dad, outside on the balcony on a small black and white tv in Pakistan, where we lived. Fond memories of my father, big disappointment that the Dutch team lost, but that seems to be our fate. We were so close in 2010, but then Iniesta ended it all.

I never knew that, but that game looks indeed fixed. Brazil and Holland were both robbed in that World Cup.
Yes indeed so , it was later proven that the World Cup was fixed by Juntas .The Dutch players complained that Argentinians were being quite aggressive and boisterous. Ruud Krol even exclaimed that he feared for his life , and he was the hard man of the team . And the Argentina’s kicking up a fuss about Rene van de Kerkof wearing a cast that they thought , he shouldn’t have worn , even though he’d done so unhinged throughout the tournament and nobody batted an eye lid . All this cheating and scumbag behaviour from the Argentina’s made 78’ one of the worst World Cups .
You need to see all the kicks of the Dutch I did not see any bloody player, like Luque and Tarantini when the game ended .. The hands were not a warning at that time. Next time we play dolls to see if the Netherlands ever wins.

je me souviens qu'en 1978 j'étais très jeune mais on nous avait présenté en France l'équipe d'Argentine comme des tricheurs, truqueurs aidés par l'arbitre alors qu'en réalité c'était une équipe magnifique avec Kempes, Passarella, Fillol Ardiles, Bertoni... L'argentine est une très grande nation de foot qui a toujours eu de très grands dribleurs, Kempes, Maradona puis Messi !
