  • I have wanted to visit a flint quarry for a while now, so today, I went to the Nethers Flint Farm to dig some flint. This farm is on the Flint Ridge Flint seam, which is 10 miles long and 3 miles wide and it is a few feet below the ground surface. It is around 30 miles east of Columbus Ohio. They charge a $10 per adult digging fee and $1 per pound for the flint you take home.

    Watch out for the rocks that "pot" and shatter during the heat treating phase. It can dent a pan lid. I now use sand as a filler and energy damper for the minor steam explosions, while using a turkey roaster to keep the smell outside, the sand also acts a heat buffer for energy savings.
    I have some nice slabs from the farm. Going there again soon with some friends this year to mine more Ohio gemstones.

      I thought about using sand but ended up just laying them on the wire tray. I used a small toaster over, so I was limited on the amount that would fit in it. I didn't have any that shattered, luckily. I ended up with some really nice slabs.

      Yes it is! It is sometimes hard to identify, because it can be so many different colors and patterns. Having the raw flint and seeing how it changes when heat treated will help me identify it as I find artifacts made from flint ridge. Thanks! Go luck!

      I spend a lot of time at my camp from Oct-Dec, so I don't get out arrowhead hunting much. Now that the rivers are getting flooded, it is hard to find time when it isn't raining and the rivers are at normal level. I guess I can't complain about the flooding, because we need it to wash out more artifacts out for us to find. Thanks for watching!

      The Nethers Farm is a popular place. Lots of videos on CZcams from there and seems like they have steady business from flint hunters. Thanks for watching!

    That is some beautiful material. Can't wait to see how it turns out after the heat treating. I hope you can video some of the process. Do you plan to knap any of the flint?

    • @OutdoorRetiree
      @OutdoorRetiree  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Yes it is! I'm curious to see how the heat treating changes some of these pieces. I will video some of the slab cutting process and show how I heat treat it too, without making it too long and boring. I haven't had an interest in knapping, but wouldn't rule it out some day. I really wanted to get the feel for what the Indians did to get the flint, more of a learning process and it was a fun trip. The pieces I ended up with are too big for my lapidary saw, so I will buy a 10" wet tile saw and get it set up for slabbing this flint. Have a good one!

      I do a lot of deer hunting in the fall and lately, with the extreme cold/snow and now high water, I haven't been out much. I made a trip the other day and found knee high mud on the banks, so it made it really tough going. Do you have another channel besides this one? I looked and this one only has 3 videos. Where did you end up at on your trip down river last fall? Good luck!

    Very interesting. Can't wait to see them cut, heat treated, and polished. How many pounds of flint did you get? 😊

    • @OutdoorRetiree
      @OutdoorRetiree  Před 2 měsíci +1

      I had two 5 gallon buckets of flint. Their scale weighed it at 25 lbs, but I think it was a little more than that. After I get back from my Digstock metal detecting event next week, I'm going to buy a larger wet saw that will cut the pieces I brought home. Then, I can heat treat some and polish some and make another video. Thanks for watching!

      I haven't had an interest in knapping, but wouldn't rule it out some day. I just wanted to see what the Indians did to get the flint they used and once I learned about the Nethers Farm, I wanted to make a trip there. It was an enjoyable trip and now I have a lot of good chunks of flint to work with. Have a good one!
