- I stopped by Nether's Farm in Ohio to rockhound some of Ohio's State Gemstone - Flint. It was my first trip there and it was awesome! I ended up with some AMAZING flint in colors from blue to red to orand and everything in between.
Nether's Farm is a pay site which at the time was $7.50 + .50 a pound. For this low fee you get to mine in a multitude of pits that they have dug out. It seemed like each pit had a different color of flint.
I met a very knowledgable flint miner and knapper named Roy Miller. He's produced several excellent videos about gathering and knapping flint. Check him out at his website: www.roymillerflintridge.com
I hope you enjoy the video! Feel free to drop a comment or any tips as I'm not an expert and love to learn! Please subscribe for more rockhounding videos. - Zábava
Heat treatment of Flint ridge chert brings out some amazing colors and definitions
I've been digging there for over 20 years. If it's next to a tree, stay away from it. The nappers know the good material.. and they tend to throw it towards the trees to know it's something they shouldn't look at again.. for those of you doing lapidary or tumbling, it's always worth the look.. Just remember it's an 89-year-old lady running this property. Please respect it.. take your trash.. and pay when you leave!!
What does nappers mean?
I found so many crystals there!
Just went there today. Found a Boulder on my own. Yay!
Going there tmrw
Hehe :3 I love the leaverite joke
Really like to go there sometime, thanks for the video.
If you get a chance you should go - its a wonderful site! Thank you for watching!
Thanks for the video. Heading down from Michigan early May. Would drill and feather and wedges work to break it up?
That rind looks totally like the Saddle Mountain stuff! Sometimes I have difficulty telling the difference between chert and jasper, as long as they similar hardness, will tumble!
Chert, flint, jasper - they all seem to tumble well. Thanks for watching Ragnar - you rock!
Since you have been there, can you tell me how accessable the pits are for someone with a handicapp? Can you drive close enough to the pits that someone who using a walker could get to the edge of the pit and sit in a folding chair while i go down into the pit and do the actual mining? My girl had a back Surgery that didnt go well, and she has very limited use of one leg because of it, and has to use a walker to get around. My plan was to pull in as close as i could to a pit, get her sit up in a folding chair and Bring the Matererial up for her to sort while I dig and collect. But I cant really tell from any of the videos I have found about Nethers farm how far in you can drive or how much of a walk it is to the first couple pits. Thanks in advance.
Absolutely not safe for somebody in a walker.. You can only drive your car to the edge of the property and then you have to walk back and be able to go down into the pits.. Flint is incredibly sharp and dangerous and pops. Lots of tires. That's why we can't drive back anymore.. But there's always surface collecting
@@chewy9725 Well I would be the one going up and down into the pits, my girl wont be trying to go into the pits themselves with her walker. I was gonna have her sort what I collect. But she will have a Chair and not be doing the digging or climbing in and out of the pits.
That's no longer there.. Many has been filled in and new smalls available.
