  • Courtney narrates the footage of a crash that the NTSB's scathing Final Report faults the pilot for a High Density Altitude crash! Poor pilot decision-making nearly claims the lives of his passengers. Knowing what to do on warm to hot days is a paramount in pilot education!

Note: A LEGAL ultralight is limited to 1 seat and requires no pilot certificate to fly. A 2-seat "ultralight" is, in fact, a Light Sport Airplane and requires a pilot certificate to fly. There is no such thing as a "legal 2-seat ultralight."
Courtney is an FAA-certified Advanced Ground Instructor (AGI).

Have you had hot day misfortunes?

Funnily enough, as people say thanks for the voice-over (😃) I'm gonna say two things: 1) CZcams often punishes AI voice-over channels, if that happens to you, please know that the value in your channel isn't the audio, it's the experience, insights and your personality. 2) Thanks for the added effort of adding that voiceover to the work you already do, and also, please know that, for me at least, especially as you've let us know you're hearing impaired, the absence of voiceovers on your videos isn't a problem for me at all. I'm just grateful for what you're doing.

Thank you very kindly. I'm glad you enjoy them. The voiceover thing is an experiment. It adds at least 2 hours to the production of the video, plus I have to subscribe to the service, and it's not inexpensive. The free and low cost offerings sounded bad and/or robotic. We will see how it goes, thanks!

Flying from my grass strip at 5050', "EVERY" flight requires consideration of density altitude. The climb performance varies by a factor of 5 or more from a cool winter day to a hot summer afternoon. Summer flying often puts me above 9000' DA before I start the engine. This high it is usually best to NOT start my Quicksilver MX Rotax 447's engine!!

Having taken my 503 Quicksilver up to 10k feet several times, the last 2k feet was a struggle. So I do understand the 447's shortcomings. Thanks for commenting.

My Paramotor instructor in Niagara Falls Canada never mentioned this "High Density Altitude" problem! Yet another thing he failed at.

Great video!!!! I live at 4500’ and can relate to density altitude!!! Keep up the videos!!!!!

Thanks Courtney for another good video! It is sad to see what can happen when a pilot makes poor choices, either on the ground or in the air….

Did this pilot have has Certificate revoked?

Good question. It's his second crash, too. It would be up to the FAA, not the NTSB.

I saw VHF video of a similiar incident on youtube with more grim results. A pilot was flying a small plane and was doing scenic flight with a passenger. The pilot flew in the center of a box canyon and shortly realised the terrain was rising above his climb performance but had no way out at this point. He needed to clear some tree's to turn around but it was too late. He kept raising the noise each time triggering the stall horn, eventually his airspeed had completely dropped and you hear him say hang on Ronnie as he begins to impact trees. This guys were found for double digit years so I'm assuming all they found was wreckage and bones. But they were able to repair enough of the tape since it was so long ago that you were able to view the last portion of the flight until initial impact with the trees and it goes blank because of being out there in wreckage for so long. Just think about it no one knew about the incident for or location for almost a decade I may be extraggering but it was a long time I believe it was the 80's or early 90's and they didn't find them until late 2000's. Imagine being forgot about for that long until someone randomly stumbles across your body and wreckage that wasn't even looking for you. My point is it isn't worth it. Dont force a plane to fly or fly yourself into a box and hope the outcome is good. Instead go have dinner or a night out with family and friends because your not only hurting yourself your hurting the people that care about you.
