I was indifferent about the 4wd experience....but ended up giving it a shot. Didn't love it at first. But it's grown on me a bit. It's not my favorite to run in but I've been wearing it a lot as a casual shoe lately on days when I don't want a zero drop.
I love Altra running shoes, the torin, the provision.. escalante.. but what I love about the most is the wide toe box and the zero drop.. I'm much faster and more comfortable. Going with the 4 mm drop, just makes them one more company that does the same thing I think they would do better too stick in their niche. ❤
The Experience line of shoes is supposed to be a transition shoe for people not comfortable with the zero drop. However, it is nice when bands stick to their niches.
Great video and cool shoes from Astra. Even back in the day at Runnergy I always said Astra's story is in the natural toe box shape, not the zero drop. Just to clarify arch support ( aka fit) and pronation control are two different things.
Thanks for watching! Altra is also one of our favorite brands. We like to categorize arch support and pronation control as the same because around 90% of the people who walk into our store who overpronate need extra arch support as well.
I love the FWD Experience and am very excited for these!! The Wild seems like a great flowy/hybrid trail shoe. And the Form looks awesome - considering getting a pair for the looks even though I normally stick with neutral shoes.
The Experience line is a very fun line of shoes from Altra. All of them are very fun models to choose from. If you love the FWD, the Flow is very similar with a _slightly_ wider toebox and a _slightly_ softer midsole. Let us know what you think if you do end up trying them out!
Been using Altras for a few years and finally tried a few other brands and it’s been a revelation. Hoka Mach 6 and New Balance Rebel v4. Altras really have an image problem. Way too niche and not very ‘cool’ but the foams they’re using really aren’t very responsive or fast. EVA is so old skool
I love my FWD Experience so much I bought 2 pairs (which is really odd, because I'm an Escalante girl). Glad they changed the name, because it made no sense.
Definitely excited about the Wild, that's the direction the Timp should have gone, too expensive for now, but will wait for the price to drop...right now there are a lot of cheap Timp 4 out there, and except for the horrible zero duration upper and the poor Maxtrac grip, it's the best Altra shoe so far...the Timp 5, I'll pass unless the low gtx ones that haven't come out yet. ..
After my first run in the Wild, I loved it. The FWD was already a favorite of mine and I have been doing most of my running on the trails. Funnily enough, the price of the Timp 5 is actually lower than the Timp 4 was on release. $155 compared to $160. However, I agree that it is a bit too high of a price point for that shoe.
I have the FrontWheelDrive. I love the fit, its near perfect. I feel the outsole is a bit to hard, but maybe I ran in the Tempo to much 😂. Its not as efficient at fast interval paces, but thats why I like them, so I need a bit more effort in training abd reap the benefits in racing with the fabulous Vanish Carbon 2's
If your only gripe with the FWD is having a firmer midsole, then the Flow will be perfect for you because it has a slightly softer midsole. The fit is still the same, the only difference is I found my pair _marginally_ wider.
I might be coming back to looking at altras next time around. I had the escalante 2.5s and loved mostly how the zero drop and soft-cushioned sole lessened pain on my bent toes when walking. Thinking that soft and zero-low drop was the way to go for me I then bought the NB More V4, but have found them to be too soft and too narrow in the mid section even though I don't have wide feet (the sidewalls really dig into my arch on my right foot in particular). So I think I'll be trying the Form and possibly the Rivera in the future.
Glad to hear you loved the Escalante. It's one of the fan favorites from Altra. We love the Fresh Foam cushioning from New Balance. However, we agree that it can be a little bit too soft for some. We will mention that if you plan to try a Rivera, just know that it is in the Slim fit category of Altra toe boxes, whereas the Escalante 2.5 is on the wider side of the Standard fit.
Thanks for your great review!! I especially appreciated that you addressed the addition of a hard custom insert. I use one and many runners do but not all running shoes have the volume to accommodate it. Do you think a half custom orthotic will fit well in the experience trail? Thanks!
Listen to all the videos it seems like from what you're saying I think that your fit on your foot is a standard but a lot of people got the ultra for the wider experience or original so when you say it it seems to fit fine I think it's your foot is a standard so I'll have to stick with paradigm or something until they get a original width or wide
My foot measures as a standard D width. However, thanks to my bunion I find myself needing a little bit of extra width compared to a D width, just not as much as a 2E.
Would the Form be comparable to a Brooks Adrenline regarding cushion and stability, or do you think a Provision or Paradigm would be better? I’m currently a LP and Torrin user, but want something like my old Adrenlines.
I would have to say no. The new Altra Form is a medial support-focused shoe with the singular guide rail built into the medial side of the shoe. The Brooks Adrenaline provides both lateral and medial support with a guide rail on both sides of the shoe. The Paradigm 7 would be closer to the Brooks Adrenaline than the Altra Form because the Paradigm has a guide rail on both sides of the shoe.
@@RunMoore thanks for the advice! Looks like Paradigm will be next for me. The Altra toe box healed/lessened a neuroma in my left foot, so I definitely want to stay with them.
I wish altra made narrow sizes. I love the wider toe box for toe splay but my foot is really long and narrow overall…do you know of any running shoe with a natural/foot shaped proportion but that runs narrow overall?
@@Seanonyoutube mid foot is narrower but if you’re looking for a narrower mid foot with open toe box I’d recommend Topo Athletic as well. The cyclone 2 is a great shoe.

I frequently wear the FWD Experience as my casual shoes theses days as well!
I tried the flow compared to the Clifton 9 and I liked the flows better
I just got Olympus via two it's really really excellent.

I loved both the paradigm and provision, I can only hope the experience form is just as good
The Form is a great alternative if you're looking for a hint of drop. Definitely one of our favorites here at Run Moore.

I bought two pairs of FWD I liked them so much. I’m hoping these are equal or better.
We also really liked the FWD Experience, excluding the name. The Experience Flow feels just as good, if not even better in our opinion.

Thanks Steve. I prefer the Altra Torin 7. Like from Spain 🇪🇸. Have a good day.
Thanks for watching. I was just in Spain last month! Hope you have a wonderful day as well!
I love my FWD Experience so much I bought 2 pairs (which is really odd, because I'm an Escalante girl). Glad they changed the name, because it made no sense.
Our only issue complaint the FWD Experience was its name. Now that the name issue has been addressed, the shoe is one of our favorites.

My Flow came in. They’re easily a half size longer than the FWD. The midsole seems slightly softer and the upper is less soft but more breathable.
Thanks for watching! Mine felt the same size-wise. The Flow felt marginally wider. I agree that the Flow had a softer midsole.
The Experience was too short and my big toe kept hitting the end on me so I need to go half a size up. Would I need to half size up in the flow to?
My heart will never recover that we aren't getting a vanish tempo 2
I loved the Vanish Tempo as well and it is saddening that we aren't getting an update. :(
Thanks for your great review!! I especially appreciated that you addressed the addition of a hard custom insert. I use one and many runners do but not all running shoes have the volume to accommodate it. Do you think a half custom orthotic will fit well in the experience trail? Thanks!
did you mean that the FORM fit is bigger than the old FWD Exp. model?
Does the midsole provide adequate shock absorption?
Why don't they have an original on the flow or a wide version it's crazy
We would also like to see a few wider options coming from Altra. The Flow and Form would be perfect models to make a wide for.

Olympus via 2 is very good, as well as paradigm 6 I haven't tried seven but also torin w is pretty good

Altra’s slim foot shape is narrower than their standard while still allowing room for the toes. The Rivera 3 has it.
You’ll like the Riveras by Altra.
@@Murphy2043 thanks! Is the midfoot narrower too, or just the toe box?
Can also look at the Outroad if you want a more hybrid road/trail option. Also a slim fit model.
@@Seanonyoutube mid foot is narrower but if you’re looking for a narrower mid foot with open toe box I’d recommend Topo Athletic as well. The cyclone 2 is a great shoe.
Is the wild a stiff platform?
I prefer the zero drop - I used to run in 4-6mm drop shoes and zero is much better.
I find extended running in zero-drop shoes can mess with my calves, so I prefer a little bit of a drop.
@@RunMooredefinetly agree
Did they change anything to the upper side of the ankles ? Lower it or higher it?
Not that I am aware of. The fit felt the same to me.
when will the new olympus release thanks!!
The Olympus 6's expected release is 1 January 2024.
@@RunMoore Thanks again!!!
Flow is 140, Form and Wild are 145
👍
Can you explain it to me in Hoka? lol
Altra's version of the Clifton, Arahi, and Challenger with a 1mm lower heel drop.
Thank you for the reply! Leaning towards the Altra Wild!
I have the experience wild & it definety isnt the mafate or speedgoat comfort & the quality is terrible the inside of the shoes are poorly made
Altra changes their branding, slogans so frequently that it makes it confusing for customers
It's cause they have some new idiots in charge trying to squeeze any cent they can from customers instead of sticking to the niche market
