    3:18 How to load an IR onto the Helix
    One of the things that people have been requesting for years from Line 6 is the ability to load their own impulses, and they've delivered with the Helix. It's super easy and using your own familiar, favourite impulses can certainly bring the amp models to life!

      +Michael Middei Thank you for watching! Yeah, the Ownhammer IR I used has the benefit of having several microphones used to create it, so it sounds a lot fuller.

    I have bought the Ownhammer IR's and I am for the first time in 6 months of having a helix really blown away by the sound. You really can't hear the change that well on an iPad or laptop, but through your live rig you will be blown away. That tube amp sound really comes through the sound to me feels wider and fuller. The thinness of the standard cabinets disappear, and your sustain and fullness is back. My band buddies were blown away at our last gig. My Helix volume at one o'clock through our FRFR PA just sounded incredibly good. Do yourselves a favour buy the $29 pack you will never look back. Thank for the video you got me onto Ownhammer.

      Mike Gibson I got my Helix rack last week and had trouble loading some free ir's from celestion as a promo, but when I figured it out they were better than the included Helix ir's, but don't sound as good as these,did you get the ownhammer core bundle??

  • @mikegibsonincognito4580

    One important thing to mention when you load IR's into you path is to adjust the level of the IR. Especially if you are replacing it for a helix cabinet. I found when I deleted the cabinet it sounded in the first instance very tinny with lots of noise. I had to lower the IR level to -18db in some cases. When you get the level right WOW. The whole patch comes alive and sounds just like the real thing. After 5 months of having the Helix and studying every video I could I stumbled across this level change from a screen capture. Ureka

    The IR does sound better. Not sure how much of a difference you'd notice in a mix though.

  • @AbeldeBetancourt
    @AbeldeBetancourt Před 7 lety

    The big difference is due to mic positioning. 2" is quite opaque and lacking dynamic low end in most cases. Shure SM57 is one of the worse mics (inside the Helix) also.
    But I'll try Ownhammer IRs for myself. Thanks for sharing!.

  • @DanCapeau
    @DanCapeau Před 8 lety +3

    Very cool demo. I've been noticing that the stock helix impulses don't have a lot of the bass frequencies that some custom impulses have. It's cool though because you might end up cutting those out in a mix anyway. Good job and thanks for this!

    • @sixstringsamurai77
      @sixstringsamurai77  Před 8 lety +5

      +Dan Capeau Yep for sure. I use the Ownhammer stuff because often for the type of reviews I do, I want it to have much more of a "room" vibe than you'd usually have in a properly mixed track. So I guess it really depends on what you need from your IR - but the great thing really is the freedom to be able to choose!

Now... I want a Line 6 Helix!! ;-)

  • @ChadPhillipsMusic
    @ChadPhillipsMusic Před 7 lety +1

    I am wondering if the clarity remains intact on the Ownhammers when you play at stage volume. One of the offputting things I've noticed with the Helix is that when I create a tone at studio volume with stock Helix cabs, that has the low end I want sounding pretty solid, playing at gig volume, the thing won't cut through the mix. The low end frequencies seem to get pretty darned flabby at gig volume. So I've had to compensate for this by utilizing the low cuts and/or adding an EQ to the signal chain. It's pretty annoying. I realize that a difference in tone between stage volume and room volume is normative. But it seems with Helix the differences are pretty stark. I've been considering IRs, but just haven't pulled the trigger yet and would like to know if your Ownhammer IRs hold together well at live volumes. Thanks!

    Great demo. How do I know which IR to use? Ownhammer has hundreds per pack!!! Do you use their IR instead of the Helix cab - or as well as?? Thanks a lot

    • @sixstringsamurai77
      @sixstringsamurai77  Před 8 lety

      +Gordon Heaney My Helix was only for demo, but if I was using it, I would probably put a few of my favourite IRs in the unit and use those as much as possible. As improved as Helix is over ALL previous Line 6 modellers, the cab simulations are still not as good as companies like Ownhammer, Redwirez etc who do it as a specialty.
      As to which IR to use, unfortunately my friend you just have to audition as many as you can to see which you like! You can make an educated guess based on what type of cab, speakers, and mic combination you think you'd like, and then drill down into the different poweramp options and mixes that OH provide. Let me know if you need any more info!

      @sixstringsamurai77  Před 8 lety +5

      +kj053910 Well, it's not meant to be a comparison of similar fruit, really. It's just to show how using a 3rd party IR can totally change the way the Helix amp models sound.

      +SeanMcFarlinNT if I'm not mistaken, Ultra Res IRs can't, but the High and Standard Res IRs can be converted for use with Helix. I'm not 100% familiar with the Bulb Cab Pack so I'm not sure whether it's an all Ultra Res library.

    • @sixstringsamurai77
      @sixstringsamurai77  Před 8 lety

      +shadowm3ld Hmmm to be honest, I can't say. I haven't spent significant time with a Kemper since they were released. And imo this is more of a competitor to the Axe than the KPA.

    • @marcstanford5857
      @marcstanford5857 Před 7 lety +1

      shadowm3ld I had both. I sold the option paralysis kemper. I think because it was going thru solid state power it did not sound right to me for lead especially: nor did it feel right. I'm not a pro and someone said to me it must be me since I couldn't get a good sound thru my recording studio. Um what recording studio would that be? I'm a home guitarist and that's what most people are. I was not using my great amps as I said and they were collecting dust and great pedals fooling around wth the kemper all day. I did however keep the aromic amPliFire and just got the new one. Simple to use sounds pretty good and u hook it up thru the return input thru a tube amp. Which I think helps. Also. The Yamaha 100hd is great. I'm not into real complicated stuff. I'm a guitarist not a sound engineer.

    • @coffeewaldo
      @coffeewaldo Před 3 lety

      I switched my utube name. I since changed my mind. I think between the Kemper and the Helix, the Kemper sounds a bit better. It definitely has a very tiny window though than the helix. So the helix wins with the big window making it easier to see everything. But regarding both I feel they both need a real dirt or fuzz pedal in front of an amp block to help the sound and feel. The best overlooked modeler is the Yamaha 100hd which sounds and feels better and simple to use. If you’re not gigging there’s no way I’d give up my amps or pedals. I don’t use many pedals but I do have quite a lot of dirt, fuzz and overdrive pedals and a few compressors for funk. I’m not an older guy and I’m not a diehard tube amp user. I only saved up for a few really good amps in the past 6-10 yrs. there’s no way I would replace them with a modeler or profiler unless u was gigging. I’d probably use the iridium and a few pedals. I do not like ambient pedals. Just my opinion. They’re all fun to tweak but I end up tweaking and not playing. It’s a case of #gas regarding buying modelers etc. which has come to an end due to covid19 taking over.

    • @coffeewaldo
      @coffeewaldo Před 3 lety

      Also, it looks like I’m responding to myself but why doesn’t helix add better IR’s to begin with? It’s not a cheap modeler and it should have power with it too tbh.

    • @shadowm3ld
      @shadowm3ld Před 3 lety

      I have been really loving my Kemper, even after all of these years. I think Helix is pretty close when it comes to the big amp names, but the Kemper being able to load profiles of any and all other amps puts it over the edge for me. Just imho

    Still waiting a Line 6's Editor for Windows to decide buying (or not). It must be, at least, so practical and easy to manage custom patches as that "old one" available for the "old HD500"... I use my pedalboards ON THE FLOOR (and not on a desk, chair etc. - it does have an "expression pedal" and it is meant to be used by... our right foot!!). All CZcams "reviews" so far do not show anyone building any custom patch from zero (showing each "emulated pedal" configurations options). That's why future CZcams videos with demos using a "Editor for Windows" will be more useful in my opinion. Take a look at this awesome one (for the "old" HD500) - that's what I'm still waiting for: czcams.com/video/KPXGMoal5ZE/video.html.

      +Solrac K Personally I don't think the Helix needs a Windows/OSX editor AT ALL. The interface is so beautifully intuitive and easy to use that at no time did I feel like I would benefit from a computer-based editing GUI. Everything you need is already there at your fingertips!

    • @solrack8634
      @solrack8634 Před 8 lety

      +Six-String Samurai Gear Reviews Hi! Everything WILL NOT be on my "fingertips" if I use the pedalboard on the floor!!! And is far more easier (as demonstrated on the HD 500 editor's video I've posted on the previous msg) to have a "more intuitive" GUI on a big screen to adjust each "emulated effect pedal". Line 6 has promised the software to be launched soon... Reagards, and thanks for your answer!

    • @sixstringsamurai77
      @sixstringsamurai77  Před 8 lety

      +Solrac K To each his own I guess. I would much rather bend down, use the touch sensitive footswitches to select the effect I want to edit, and in a few seconds be changing parameters in real time, rather than having to connect up via USB, drag stuff around, pull parameters back and forth. I like the tactile factor!

    Too complicated. Besides amps and a great distortion pedal. I like the atomic amPliFIRE 12 better. If u need to, delete my post. Although this is very cool it's too involved with a computer or 4 cable hook up. They should've made a line6 link for the dt25 amp head.
