Try putting a reed valve from a two stroke on the intake side. It will not solve the oil consumption, but you may see an increase in compression as it appears your rotory valve has no mechanical means of dividing the compression chamber from the intake port.
I do have an idea to help compression seal better. Slot 2 opposing sides of the rotary valve chamber, and insert modified apex seals/springs from a mazda rotary engine. This way, the apex seals will press on the rotary valve, sealing the valve from the compression chamber, and helping to separate the intake/exhaust cycles. Continue to use 2 stroke fuel, to help lubricate the rotary valve and apex seals.
You are doing what I imagined years ago, it's just amazing to see the problems I imagined come to life.

The issue was never about the fuel, but a sealing issue in the rotary exhaust. You need some rotary shaft seals to prevent top end oil from seeping into the combustion/exhaust chamber.
In the build video, you were smearing the rotary exhaust in oil, meaning you created a "Total-loss oiling system", meaning you must continuously feed it oil or the shaft seizes, ergo it smokes - A LOT, because it continually feeds and burns of the excess oil.
To (hopefully) prevent that, you need to design the rotary exhaust shaft with bearings and seals, however doing so is incredibly difficult, because of the fine tolerance, added with the risk of the heat from combustion expanding the shaft and seizing it. Unless, you can control how much the shaft would potentially expand, meaning you'd need to make it water cooled.

I think if he can manage to seal it better and install some sort of way to adjust the timing by loosening a screw and moving something in a similar fashion of adjusting a distributor. Just to give it a little bit of retard and advance abilities of the timing. I think that would also help alot with the cold starts.

The comments in this CZcams can be reduced to cooling, lubrication/sealing, and, possibly, “aeration”.
It would be best to solve these issues without having to rebuild the engine. With that in mind I would suggest the following.
    1. Regarding cooling. Figure out a way to run water over the cooing fins. Especially the fins around the valve shaft.
    2. Regarding lubrication hand sealing. Start with half a bottle of well oiled gasoline and as the engine runs add straight gasoline until you are running without oil in the fuel.
    3. Add a crankcase ventilation valve. Especially if, after number 2, the amount of smoke is reduced.
    4. This requires some amount of rework, but less than cutting a new valve shaft. Reduce the amount of oil ports in the tube that feeds oil to the valve shaft. Make sure the oil ports are only placed over the “bearing” areas of the shaft.
    5. If possible, reduce the oil pressure in the valve shaft oil tube. You may be getting so much pressure that oil is forced into the valve openings.
If any of these have a positive impact then you know that, if number 1, you need to redesign with a water jacket. If number 2, use straight gasoline. If number 4, then you might also consider an actual head on the top of the cylinder that cuts the valve shaft in half. This would allow you to but bronze oil bearing bushings along the valve shaft in the head, and Teflon seals in the shaft on each side of the bushings.
I really admire your ingenuity in bringing this project as far as you have, and hope you find the means to continue.
    Cheers!
    ojb

It's so well built and aesthetically pleasing I want it to work...
But even though it's not a success it's a very well built failure. Design and fabrication is top notch, the seals however were not able to keep the oil where it was supposed to be.
It's interesting that you managed to make something that looks like it could have come from a factory. Usually a prototype like this looks a lot cruder, less like an engine ready for use and more like a rig built to test ideas on. Just building it and getting it to actually run, however smoky, is a feat on it's own.

I use to race snowmobiles that had a rotary valve engine. There was bearings and seals on the shaft both sides of the shaft to seal off the crankcase. The 2 cycle oil separates from the gas to lubricant the bearings in the bottom end. When we rebuilt them there was always a oil build up in the bottom end. I think you are sucking some of this oil up threw your rotary valve and going to the top of the piston. I believe this is where you are getting all your smoke problems. I hope this helps you out.

This is a very interesting comment. I was thinking there didn’t need to be oil in the fuel as well but I couldn’t think of how that could be demonstrated short of running the engine with straight gasoline and running the risk of sieving the valve shaft.
But your comment about the volume of smoke indicating the valve shaft is sufficiently oiled by pump and the crankcase oil is the “proof” needed to run the engine on progressive less and less oiled gasoline. If, as the fuel contains less oil, there is less smoking then the oil in the exhaust is “blow-by” either in the cylinder wall or the valve shaft.
