- I’ll let you in on a little secret… I’ve been having an artist identity crisis this year. Struggling to find my own artistic voice and constantly overthinking every single art rule. But is MAGIC more important than METHOD in art?? Or are the fundamental skills what truly make an artist?? We’re getting’ vulnerable and talking about some spicy takes on art today and how to loosen up with your art. While we chat, I’ll be painting a cozy little gouache campfire featuring extra toasty marshmallows and dragons in cardigans (cuz’ why not??)

Ooh this is timely because lately I've been doing the opposite. I used to be meticulous and now I'm painting way more loosely and having way more fun.
I LOVE that you’ve been having more fun in your art practice!! Thanks for watching 💛
I mean, the word “Heart” has “Art” in it. I feel the same about having to have heart to be able to be called art. And that can be your very own, or studies, or fan art. But the point is to love what you’re doing so your heart reflects in your work 🥰
I absolutely agree!! Thank you so much for watching, Karen. 💛
Allison, i'm so like you! a bit of a perfectionist, looking for depth and symbolism and symmetry in pretty much everything. My favorite part of this video is where you complain about your own logical fallacy by saying
"There were many many instances of but is this is actually how firelight would look on a Fallen Tree? I love how I've
literally painted a dragon in a freaking cardigan toasting a marshmallow with his fire breath but I was concerned about the realism of light on a log!!" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Me to a T!!
Bahaha I'm so glad you enjoyed my video!! Thank you so much for watching 💛
I've been learning about "intuitive" and "process" art. It sounds like it would be way out of your comfort zone but if you want to get truly acquainted with enjoying the process I would recommend learning about it. It's a way of doing art without judgment. It's actually very challenging and I'm still learning how to do it. You never know what you'll make because there's basically no planning involved. Scary I know. But it's a wonderful practice and really connects you to yourself and your art 😊
This is such a cute scene, very cozy, please keep posting more videos like this❤
Aww thank you so much!! I'm so glad it gave you cozy vibes. 💛
I love the painting and the topic you picked for this video. Honestly, it comes at the perfect time, because I've been struggling with very similar things. I'm happy you were able to find more joy in painting lately and I hope you will find the freedom your creativity craves. Thanks for your lovely video!
Thank you so much for watching and for your kind words!! I'm so glad my video connected with you 💛
What a lovely scene ❤
Thank you so much, Lizzie!! 💛
thanks for sharing this :) lovely painting ^_^
Thank you so much!! 💛
You're such an inspiration 😍 thanks for another lovely video
Thank you so much for watching!! 💛
The painting looks gorgeous!!!!! And I couldn’t agree more with you on what you said when it comes to balance our relationship with creativity and that make something that has our heart and souls should come first and give less importance to the perfection or the "right" way of making art, I've been struggling with this myself and started working on healing the way I approach my art because I was getting more fear and paralysed when making art due to be to much in my head, things started to get better when I shifted to just draw whatever I was feeling at the moment, I started to create more simple pieces that allowed me to move fast and with satisfaction and now eventually I found myself making more art and creating my usually complex pieces between other ones more simple and enjoying both. Glad you shared this and hope you have a nice holidays and a happy new year!
Thank you so, so much!! It can be SO hard finding a good balance. I'm so glad you've been working on simply enjoying your creative practice!! Those simpler pieces can be so, so beneficial for our hearts. 💛
Whatever you do is magic. It's such a pleasure to watch you create, and always fun to hear your stories. Campfires and dragons-works for me. :)
Aww thank you so much!! I'm so glad you enjoy my videos 💛
You are one of my favorite gouache artist! I love your style!
Aww thank you so much!! That's so sweet! 💛
I can tell with certainty CZcams algo is messed up.. how do YOU not have a bigger reach?
I've always been inspired or well hoped to draw and paint something that's fairy world genre. All your videos look to me like that, it's those beautiful places you get to live through your paintings. Beautiful. Thank you for the inspiration. I hope to learn from you. 😊
PS do you have a pinterest page I am just missing maybe? I kinda like pinterest just cause of the less social media aspect to it.
Aww thank you so much!! I'm so glad you've enjoyed my videos and my illustrations. 💛 I don't currently have a Pinterest page (juggling too many other things at the moment 😅), but hopefully soon!
that is such a cute piece! can neveer have too many dragons in cardigans 🥰
Ahhh thank you so much!! 💛
I love the cozy clutter cottage vibes of your work. It makes me want to live in your paintings! I was wondering what brush you are using. The black on with the golden tip on the handle. You use it for much of the detail work but its big enough for layers as well.
Ahhh thank you so much!! That makes me so happy. 💛 The black and gold brushes are from Altenew!
I absolutely love your art style it makes my inner child happy. How did you start drawing your characters in this art style?
Aww thank you so much! To be honest my art style is ever-changing and growing, so I don't know exactly when I started drawing characters like this. 😅
Love your art sooo much ❤and I was wondering if there are any online classes that you have tried so far and recommend?
Thank you so, so much!! I definitely recommend taking Robert Kondo and Dice Tsusumi's Painting With Color and Light class on Schoolism!! It's kinda' intense, but super insightful. I think I mention a few other classes/art books in my DIY art school video as well!! 💛
Even though I do not paint, I draw manga and currently working on a project 10 page one piece. Your tips help me.
Salam!! :D
Thank you so much for watching!! And best of luck with your project!! 💛
Absolutely beautiful piece-(as is true of each of your pieces!).
I wish you were able to see your skills through the eyes of an outsider. Your capabilities artistically are simply out of this world! I think that fact, combined with evidence suggesting you are also a driven professional with great external support, plus a very strong internal drive to succeed says to me that you can’t help but be just as successful as you desire to be -& in all the ways that are important to you! 🙏🏻
😂 I applaud that you’re taking steps to bring the overt joy back into the work- I believe you’ll have it all back and then some- as you continue to incorporate the overwhelming knowledge gained through the 100 scenes you completed it will start to flow in when least expected since it’s just a part of your internalized experiences now!!! Just….Wow!
One more bit of unsolicited advice, if I can?🫣🤗
-remember to pray too! Tho we often forget that Jesus is there for us even in the non-life and death moments-He wants us to ask Him for help!
He desires to guide our paths and will straighten your way right back into joyful art creating in no time! 🙌🏻🙌🏻
Much support and encouragement to you; my 𝓼𝓲𝓼𝓽𝓮𝓻 𝓲𝓷 𝓪𝓻𝔀𝓸𝓻𝓴 & 𝓬𝓻𝓮𝓪𝓽𝓲𝓿𝓲𝓽𝔂😜and most importantly, my 𝓼𝓲𝓼𝓽𝓮𝓻 𝓲𝓷 𝓒𝓱𝓻𝓲𝓼𝓽! I truly look forward to seeing all twenty of this year’s original pieces!!! 🙏🏻🙌🏻🥰✌🏻👍🏻☺️thank you for always motivating the rest of us out here just trying to navigate this creative world as well. All of this is such a GIFT!
Thank you so, so much!! Your words were so encouraging to me. 💛 And thank you so much for the reminder to pray about all of this. It's most definitely something I tend to overlook thinking it's not an important thing to pray about. But Scripture reminds us to take everything to God in prayer! 💛
Once you learn the fundamentals and practice them enough, the more it should hopefully become muscle memory and you don’t have to agonize over the basics, allowing you to focus more on the expression, right? I’m not there yet, but maybe someday.
So true!! 💛
