    Not all jobs give you paperwork, some just take you off the schedule, and say they don't have hours to give you, yet refuse to say you're laid off.
    That way, they are off the hook from paying unemployment Two grocery stores did this to the catering people in the deli - Winn-Dixie, and Harris Teeter.

      In New York you can get unemployment if you've fallen below a threshold

      ?? Not true. While you are employed, both of you and your employee pay into employment insurance system. After the termination, it's the gov't who pays you EI. Your employer don't lose a dime at all, it ain't their responsibility to pay you anything after your termniation

    Also, if you have a medical FSA balance remaining, use it up that day on FSA eligible purchases. If you don't, then you forfeit it all.

      Mr Cole charges a 10% commission on every profit made after trading session which is fair compare to the effect he put in to make huge profit.

    helpful tips! I'm potentially going to be dealing with this over the next year. I'm in my mid 50s so it's very frightening because many companies are not in a super rush to hiring older people.

    i just got laid off...they refused to give me my letters of recommendation until i signed off on my severance offer. Since i am a few short yrs away from retirement, it's a rough place to be. U think they would want to help me after so many yrs of loyalty, but they could care less.

    Nope, first thing you gotta check is the employment termination reason which decides whether you'll get EI or not. It doesn't matter if you're fired or laid-off as long as the reason code states the termination without a cause

      Lol, COBRA is NOT affordable, at al, to anyone with just unemployment benefits.

      @@drunkdonutboy Cobra is just the full unsubsidized cost plus a 2% administrative fee. Definitely ridiculously expensive, but similar to unsubsidized ACA insurance. There are no inexpensive options unless your annual income is low.

    Glad I saw this. I moved to new state but with same job. Googled benefit term and new state only pays 26 weeks vs old state which pays 52 weeks. Fear of being laid off made me start researching. This sucks.

      So did my neighbor. But he was also one of the first ones they laid off when it got tight because he was new. So.. Be careful and work hard.

      They really know what they're doing when they do this. It absolves them from wrongful termination suits even if you were a good employee.

    I’m brutal. Some folks are just there for the paycheck & hold others back. At the time, they were not productive and my budget could be better utilized.
    On the other hand, it would be good to look into COBRA plans or Obamacare. You never want to be uninsured because that can break a lot of us financially or damage credit ratings.

    In Italy our american Company decided to lay off people. They needed a mandatory 2 months notice to the employee and to pay 2 years of full salary + vacation days still unused and bonuses. The fact that this doesn't happen in the US Is astounding to me. Plus an employee gets 12 months of unemployment (75% of your previous salary. God I Wish i was let go

    I have been blacklisted after threatening to sue my former employer, nobody will hire me unless i got invited to apply which is how I got my current job ive been at for 2 years. Lawyers are useless since they cannot control what they say and they are a Government agency themselves. I don't know what to do about this. (The person I had complained about was fired eventually but that still didn't help my case)

      Thank you for sharing your story. This does happen to laid-off employees who have a strong case for discrimination. If you threaten a lawsuit, or if it’s found out that you’re pursuing a lawsuit, word gets around about it, and you get blacklisted as a “troublemaker”.

    Travel. This is when you have time of that you can actually take. It's great if you've saved up the money to spend on nice accommodations, but staying with a friend and avoiding the tourist traps might be an option.
    *If you're getting unemployment there are rules and if you set a VPN your case gets frozen and flagged.
