The Rip-Off Royal Oak We're in Love With | LIQUOR RUN

  • In this week's episode of LIQUOR RUN, Christian and Rolly dive into a bottle of Chardonnay and discuss some of the new additions to the watch shop!
For more luxury vintage watches, visit theoandharris.com.
Today, we're talking about two new additions to the shop - the first, an Omega Dynamic and the second, a Bulova Royal Oak.
The Omega Dynamic is a truly off kilter piece, one that never seemed to totally hit the mark with many consumers. Perhaps it was the 100% brushed steel case. Maybe it was the fully lumed sword hands. Maybe it was the funky Arabic numerals. Whatever it was, consumers didn't quite get it at the time, and as such they remain totally undervalued to this day.
Then we get to the pseudo-icon: the Bulova Royal Oak. This version comes in quartz, and it is a pretty unabashed rip-off of the Audemars Piguet equivalent. That being said, it's also super well done. The finishing is incredible, it wears beautifully, and on the whole, it still represents a tremendous value.

Lmao Christian. You have no idea how accurate you are about how watch lovers react to a Bulova Royal Oak. I FINALLY (after a year of searching) found an automatic-white dial- stick hand Bulova Royal Oak. The watch was in need of a service so when I took it to my favorite watchmaker and he literally word for word said, "Oh my god. I've never actually seen one of those. I've heard about it. Is that thing with Gerald Genta true?" My answer is obviously no and explained my research about it. Also coincidentally he was wearing his AP Royal Oak at the time I walked in and immediately begins comparing the two next to each other. It was hilarious because he was so excited to work on it. He runs to the back to look at the movement, check out the dial, take pictures, and check its weight. I find it so endearing and funny that a guy wearing an actual AP was so happy to compare and look at the Bulova Royal Oak. It absolutely is an amazing conversation piece. He even wanted to refinish the bracelet on the Bulova to be more like the finish of his own Royal Oak. I can't wait till it comes back from the service the guy is an artist of the highest order.

i bought a 1978 GMT Master 1675 Rolex from my boss at the time (1983) and business partner for the last 25 years for the huge price of 300.00 US dollars and in 1980 gave it to my brother for northing because i didn't dig the small crown and plastic (acrylic) crystal.. picked up one of many Subs and my brother wore it until almost 1990 and i offered him 1500.00 to get it back but he sold it to a fly by night jeweler for 2 grand and the next day had a 5 grand price on it! The biggest mistake in my watch career and I've made more than a few! The watch was still perfect and selling for around 10 grand and i paid 300.00 for it and wasn't happy with a few things i thought were cheap and those same things are what make it so special in these days... Dad is the best!

Since he passed away im completely in Love with this 16750 GMT. But even if it wasnt my Dads daily Watch it really kinda grew on me because its just very different compared to the latest Rolex GMTs. It has a pretty Slim Case and looks smaller and more classy in my opinion. Greetings from Germany :)

    Que the haters...haha
I love homage watches. I have a Steinhart OVM 39mm and love it! I will never be able to own a Mil-Sub but I can really enjoy this.
Here is my pitch and take on homage watches with a couple of analogies.
    Vintage cars and guitars.
No one hates on a Factory Five Cobra. No one tries to pass it off as a Shelby Cobra. You can get a complete one with modern reliable drivetrain and brakes for a fraction of a real one. In some ways a better car. Would anyone prefer a Factory Five over a Shelby. No way but thousands of people love and enjoy them.
I think my Steinhart and other quality homages are the same way. Compare the parts and build quality to a Tudor from a few decades ago. ETA 2824-2 movement. Same materials for the case and bracelet. 300m waterproof rating. The Steinhart beats that vintage Tudor by providing a Sapphire crystal and a solid clasp vs a stamped one. True on this count for many Rolex’s also.
Would I rather have it over a choice vintage piece? No, but it is a quality watch nonetheless.
Secondly, guitars compare well I think. Here you have a nice comparison because there is less scarcity than in the car example.
Tons of companies make copies of Fender Stratocasters, Telecasters and Gibson Les Pauls. Many of them are great instruments that professional musicians love. Some of them are are even preferred like Suhr guitars.
Fender also has premium Guitars from their Custom shop which would be like a limited supply Rolex, American standard guitars which are like Standard line Rolex and Mexican made but with almost the same parts which would be Tudor.
No one hates an Ibanez or Yamaha guitar though. Great performing guitars at a lower price point but still definitely an homage to the Strat.
The Chinese make the fakes though just like watches and that is crap trying to pass them off as an authentic Gibson or Fender.
I hope these analogies make some sense to you guys. You just made me think about this when you were trying to convey your feelings on the difference between a homage and a fake.
If you love it , Own it and wear it!
    Cheers 🥂

if your a funny confident guy, you can where any fake watch and when people call you out on it, take it off and let them hold it, then the convo becomes about "hey do you think it real?" and have a little fun with whoever your talking to. then proceed to say "i'm testing the feel b4 buying a real one"...

  • @Rolex-eu5vp
    @Rolex-eu5vp Před 6 lety

The other thing I think with the Bulova is the fact that the person who originally bought the piece, knew their money was going to a watch brand with heritage who would do something with that money. Fake watches can commonly fuel crime, terrorism etc as well as funding more fake watches, which no one wants. I know where I would want my money to go!

I have an homage vintage Royal Oak that is a manual wind that I picked up for about $100 that is done very nicely (forgot the brand and it is packed away right now). OK, so - Gerald Genta worked for Bulova in the 60s and designed a watch for them that looked like the Royal Oak. In Bulova, they rejected it and Genta left. He went to AP and offered them his design. They were impressed and built and released the AP Royal Oak watch in 1972. Because the watch was a success, Bulova released their own watch that looked like the Royal Oak later in the 70s.

So let me make sure I understand. You like this Bulova which by your own admission it’s a ripoff RO but you blast the GP Laureato? How do people take you seriously?

Price and level/tier are the biggest gripes I would imagine. GP is on a much higher tier than Bulova. For tier which GP sits at and the price they are charging for the Laureato, I would expect more originality. For example if Porsche made a copycat car of an iconic Ferrari model wouldn’t that be weirder as opposed to if Toyota did the same thing.
