You once referenced your mud pie-making as a child to explain your enjoyment of grouting. I think you’re on to something there. Also, I almost didn’t watch this episode. So glad I did. I currently have a project that I think needs two colors. I think you saved my piece!
Thankyou very much. Yes loved making mud pies. lol There are other ways of multi grouting, this is just the way that works well for me. :)
Great demonstration.
Tfs🌺
Thankyou so much, appreciate that. :)
Thank for the video Peter. Your videos are always excellent...I found some silicone large muffin containers in a $2 shop and have been using for grouting. they clean well and can use again
Thankyou so much and thats an excellent idea I hadn't thought of using large silicone muffin containers. :)
How you clean your silicone container after grouting?
Very helpful Thanks l
Thankyou so much Kathy and thanks for watching. :)

Thanks heaps Kelly appreciate that. 😊
So nteresting!
Thank you Mary and thanks for watching and commenting. 😊
Hi.
I absolutely love your tutorials.
You explain everything so clearly. It’s wonderful.
I’m doing a project ( just a plaque for inside ) and I’m torn as to what colour grout/s I should use.
Am I able to send you a picture of the project. ( it’s not finished yet )
I’m only new to mosaicing but I’m sooooo hooked.
Thank you
Thankyou so much Josephine, appreciate that. If you're a member of a Facebook mosaic group, there are quite a few, I would post it in their because you will receive quite a few opinions on grout colours, don't forget to post the country you're in as well. If you are not a member in a few mosaic groups its well worth joining some, there is Mosaic Mentoring, Mosaic Australia, Mosaic Connections, to name a few. Really the colour grout is dependent on how you want the finished piece to look, its really a personal choice and because of that you will receive conflicting comments on what grout colour to use. So glad you're enjoying it, mosaics are quite addictive. :)
Thanks for all your great videos. I am beginning to do outdoor projects (patio stones mostly and pots). I have recently discovered Keri colour grout FA - which is apparently good for indoor and outdoor. Do you know if I need to still use a sealant on it? Thanks in advance
Thankyou so much, you would need to check the manufacturers technical sheets regarding that as I haven't used that grout. The technical sheets sound difficult to read but they are really easy and its usually downloaded from the manufacturers website, its a good habit to get into reading them as they generally tell you everything you need to know without anyone guessing. :)
@@TreasuryRoad thanks for taking the time to answer 😁
Thank you so much for this clear and informative video! I’m pretty new to mosaics and videos like yours really help! I did wonder, does this method work if the design isn’t in straight lines or would you recommend something else? I am working on a piece that has the silhouette of a black cat, grouted in black, surrounded by colorful tiles. I want the cat to be distinct from the background so I considered outlining it with white but masking off all the curves is very difficult! I’d appreciate any suggestions 😊
Thankyou so much, sounds like an interesting mosaic. l would have thought using Bostik BluTack and curving it to the shape of the curves would be your friend. l would create a small sample and give it a try to make sure you will be happy with the outcome first. Another possibility, that might work, you could get a piece of acetate type plastic or similar, cutting out where you want the outline to be, temporarily adhere it down and grout. This may give you a distinct grouting area to go by. Let me know how you go, thanks for watching and commenting. 😊
Thanks
Thanks Susan and thanks for watching. :)
Very helpful thank you. What is the name of that metal tool you used?
Thanks very much, Im not sure what's its called I have had it for years, but I tend to use metal knitting needles that are cheap at the opshop/thrift store, there's so many things you can use or improvise with. :)
Using the plastic is a great idea! Why didn’t I think of that!? 😂 Thank you for this video.
Thankyou and my pleasure. :)
Thanks Peter for your video.
After the first color Grout How Long do you wait to start the second color grouting?
Thanks so much, its totally up to you, I generally wait till the grout firms up a bit. :)
Brilliant! that is so brave! 2 colours!! I'm a bit scared of grouting. I'm doing my first outdoor mosaic in blues/greens/ with touches of purple. What colour grout would you suggest? My tutor is favouring white but I'm worried it will look dirty over time.
Thankyou very much, I cant tell you what colour to grout your piece but if you have used darker colours then white will fragment the piece and the same if you use lighter colours and you use dark grout. White can go dirty over time for an outside piece. You could do a few small test samples with the colours of your mosaic and try different colour grouts to see how it looks. Some people put dry grout in the grout lines to see if the grout colour works with the colours of the tess and then they vacuum it up before grouting. :)
When you say “ fragment” do you mean it will look disjointed? I have a turtle in blues and a sea horse in greens, so maybe I should use a shade close to these colours, rather than white?
Thank you Peter, one question, can you mix grout in old tin cans? I have a heap that are clean or can yo only use plastic?
A good question and Im not sure of the answer I have used tin cans a couple of times in the early days as I didn't have anything else and only used them once, was that the correct thing to do for a one off mix in tin, I have no idea. :)
Great video. Can l ask about grouting the edges? Do you do it later, not at all or was it just not part of demo?
This was just a video on grouting with multiple colours also this a paver and the edges wont be seen. If you wanted to do the edges, you would use thinset and not grout as grout doesn't have any adhesive properties so it can chip or fall off when its exposed. It can be done last and mask the top so as you dont get any on the surface when doing the edges. :)
@@TreasuryRoad Hi Peter. Will you do a video on edges? I have some wedi board pieces and would like to finish the edges with mirror. I don't know whether to prepare the raw edge of the board, whether to butt the mirror up to the tiles on the front - so many questions! Thanks :)
@@georgiethomas8655 Hi Georgie, I have already produced a video on doing edges 8 different ways not specifically to the way you are wanting to do. Have a play around and see what works best for you and the mosaic, if you are adhering mirror you need to use a neutral curing adhesive so as the reflective back isn't effected. I have made a video on that as well. :)
Great tutorial! I am new to grouting and I feel I removed some of the grout on a mosaic piece I did several months ago. Can I re-grout it without removing the old grout? Thanks Peter. Greetings from Melbourne!
Thankyou very much Nella, appreciate that. I cant speak specifically about your project but generally you can regrout if you have used ordinary sanded grout and providing you haven't sealed it. All you need to do is lightly spray water over the existing mosaic piece and then regrout and continue as you would when normally grouting. Greetings from Melbourne as well. :)
@@TreasuryRoad Thank you for your quick response. I used ordinary grout and it hasn't been sealed. I appreciate your advice and look forward to watching many more of your videos. I'm glad I found you!
Peter, this is a great video. I wanted to use different colors on a lotus flower (with water/sky) I did and had no idea how. By the way, how long can I keep leftover grout in a sealed container? Thanks so much!!
Oh wait! I just heard you mention silicone cups?
Thankyou so glad you enjoyed the video. Once you mix the grout together the chemical reaction begins so it doesn't keep that long. When I am grouting I usually have some grout left over and just put a plate on top of the plastic container. This is in case I pull some grout out of the grout lines when I am cleaning. If you haven't used it by end of grouting its really throw away. Thanks for watching and for commenting. :)
Hi Peter, how do you clean out grout mixing containers to reuse them? You don't want to rinse in a sink and have grout go down your pipes and clog them? csd
What I generally do is I rinse them out along with the tools in a bucket of water, allow the grout to settle overnight or a couple of days, then pour the water off and put the grout in the bin. :)
@@TreasuryRoad Hi Peter, where you pour the water after the Grout is settled in bucket? In sink? Or what?
@@mozhdehnouripayam9470 Hi Mozhdeh, I just tip it into a big bucket outside and it evaporates slowly, I dont need to pour the water off anywhere. you can pour it off into the garden or driveway but it will be very alkaline. :)
Hi. Is it possible to dye grout? Also after grouting how long do you wait to clean it off?
Hi Noah, If you are going to colour sanded grout then coloured oxides or specific grout colourants are best. I have made videos on this process of using grout and the cleaning have a look at the grouting videos in "Starting In Mosaics", always go by the manufacturers recommendations on the grout that you buy. :)
@@TreasuryRoad thanks so much!
Why is the black grouting not dark but in parts still light on the the dark blue side??
Its the light reflecting off the side of the tile which is a whitish colour. At 16.34 mark it shows it’s all black. 😊
One thing I learned is that Australia has at least one Woolworth in the country.
LOL We have many many of them. :)
The black grout doesn't look as black in the finished product to me. Why is that?
I had a look at that, the sun came out while I was shooting the video and with the brightness and the angle it gave the illusion of it being an extremely light black, but it wasn't the case. Good pickup. :)
For me I think it’s being afraid of having picked the wrong color. 🤷♀️
There is always that risk if you leave it to the very end you are better off choosing the grout colour when you choose your Tessera at the start it makes it so much easier because you can change the colour of the tessera if it doesn’t work in with the grout colour, thank you for watching.
