I was in the front row of one of their 1977 concerts (aged 13). The concert began with the sound of a helicopter landing (‘arrival’) and then ABBA bursting onto the stage to sing Tiger. I was transfixed! And I still am. Having inhaled all their albums as a kid, it’s still a shock when I realise that young folks may only have heard individual hits. Those albums present whole, self-contained worlds. Welcome to Planet ABBA! 🙌😂🤩

For us older fans who were there through ABBA's 10 active year period its really nice seeing younger people learning about the music and enjoying it. I would say Arrival was the album where ABBA truly found their strength in solid slabs of pop music. The three previous albums 'Ring Ring' (Released 1973 under the name Bjorn, Benny & Agnetha, Frida), 'Waterloo' (1974) and 'ABBA' (1975) were all very much albums searching for their own style. After Arrival' every album is completely classic and virtually every song could have been a single. My personal favourite is 'Super Trouper', I think they truly reached a peak of creativity with that one. 'Voulez-Vous from 79 is another belter, while ABBA - the Album gives a strong nod to attempts to market themselves in the US. The Visitors from 81 is the darkest album. Some of the songs will perhaps be familiar to you from the Mamma Mia movies. It makes me wonder where you're from and how old you are, and what inspired you to listen to ABBA on a deeper level.

No worries Christiano! I really enjoyed the album and from a young age I was brought up with my parents listening to a lot of ABBA Hits, so in a way I've always been a lowkey fan of their work, but actually taking the time and listening to an album in depth really hits hard. Thanks for watching :)

Just a couple of pointers, Arrival I think everyone outside Sweden probably thought it was bagpipes but infact, its based entirely on Swedish folk music and is mainly voilins. That's Me was the B-side of Dancing Queen more or less everywhere but was an A-side single in Japan. I got what you meant about Money Money Money but back in 76 it was always likened to German caberet, My Love My Life was originally recorded as Monsieur Monsieur, Why Did It Have To Be Me as you rightly saw is a throwback to the bluesy American stuff (Fats Dimino was an inspiration). As writters in Sweden, we have to remember Benny & Bjorn are Swedish so English is their second language, also nither particularly enjoyed lyric writting and their manager Stig Anderson helped them out. But even in 76 the lyrics were better than most English writters. Its young people like you that will educate other youngsters that ABBA are a lot more than the 19 tracks on ABBA GOLD.

Like you, B, I’ve only known the hits. Nice idea of revisiting one of their biggest albums in preparation for the release of their new album. Again, you’ve been gone too long, way too long. You just crack me up with your various reactions! The shades (“chilling mode,” the bopping, the lip-syncing (during Dancing Queen, for example), the falsetto (Money, Money, Money) are all classic! 😂🤣. Great description of these tunes! I love the way you make analogies to the music (arcade music, Broadway, theater, Charley and the Chocolate Factory, Futurama, comedy sitcom theme song, Dion, “very 1950’s,” Lord of the Rings, title score, etc….. Loved your singing to The Wanderer! Although you are “not a music major,” you have a great ear for music, honestly. Thanks for doing the video. Do more of these! Don’t take so much time in between videos. Until next time, peace out….

They are still playing "Tiger" in Swedish nightclubs +30...even though remixed. The final song "Arrival" takes me right back to my backyard in the Swedish province "Dalarna" (My home place).
These kind of Swedish folklore tunes are still very, very popular in Dalarna and are played frequently everywhere (especially summertime) here and has a history from decades back!!!
Every year at Midsummertime (mid June) This kind of music is in its prime!
The instruments are (Just as 123billydog says) not bagpipes but a variety of string instruments (violin ,key harp etc)

Have you heard the original demo of My Love, My Life? It's only ever been heard in an old Swedish radio interview, but it's so beautiful and her voice is perfection, possibly even better than the released version. Agnetha doesn't struggle or need to use vibrato in between notes so far apart that it would be impossible for any other Earthly soul to reach without losing the emotion in the song. It's called Monsieur, Monsieur, and is highly recommended.

This album was so big. Before Arrival ABBA were big in Scandinavia, but after Arrival they were catapulted to the rest of the world. It started with Fernando, which was not on the album originally, but when it came out just before the album, it was a sharp indication of the level that ABBA were going to on Arrival. And then Dancing Queen was release and after that the whole album with Knowing Me, Money Money etc. Pure sensation, ABBA were all over the place, both hated and loved, but mostly loved of course.

  • @tonybaker8494

I think what sets Abba apart from most bands, even in their time, was they put out albums with minimal filler tracks. Maybe excluding Ring Ring and Waterloo, where they were still trying to figure out their identity, all their albums are consistently great from the first track to the last. So good!

    • @plerpplerp5599

The first albums 73-74 were heavily influenced by the 70s glam rock in the UK. As disco hit in the mid 70s, you can see the change also in the ABBA albums. ABBA were always ahead of the curve.

Thx !It is an album with diversity and rich, originally Fernando and happy Hawaii, were not in the album, still passes for fernando but Happy Hawaii does not seem relevant to me for the coherence and the overall quality of the album. The precd4 album "abba" seems to me even more creative in diversity, even if a little less produced. The glam rock tracks "hey hey Helen" and, mamma mia,man in middle amazing with don mix funk soul, Tropical loveland, reggae with accordion, surprising. The diversity of productions is really what makes one of ABBA's manufacturing brands. But their big successes hide too much the whole, the rest

The instrumental tile track is inspired by Swedish folk music. It was the brainchild of Benny Andersson. Form an early age, his father and grandfather had taught him to play traditional music on the accordion. You can hear references to folk music in most ABBA songs.
The piece had several working titles before it eventually ended up on the album. 'Fiol' (Violin), 'Ode to Dalecarlia', 'Arrival in Dalecarlia" and finally 'Arrival'. (Dalecarlia is a province in Sweden know for its rich folk culture.)

  • @edned5504
    @edned5504 Před 2 lety +4

The tune of Arrival the instrumental piece is used as the music to a song called Time by Frida and BA Robertson (great song, thoughtful lyrics). Frida also sang "Belle" in French as part of the musical Abbacadabra to the same tune. Another useless fact is that Frida sang backing vocals to a song called Movie Star by Swedish singer Harpo in the mid 70s. Great reaction vid.

Actually, Fernando and Happy Hawaii were added as bonus tracks after the album re-issue.
Plus, "Why Did It Have To Be Me" and "Happy Hawaii" are two different versions of the same tune. Furthermore, there was the third version of this tune, entitled "Memory lane" as per description had a country vibe, but this version never been issued, and there were not any leaks of its record either. Pity.. :D

It started life as Happy Hawaii, then became the boogie infectious Why Did It Have To Be Me. For a time it had a country feel called Memory Lane but they ended up returning to Why Did It Have To Be Me which was always a big favourite on the tours and was usually prsented as a duet between Frida and Bjorn. I got my Boy Scouts entertainer’s award playing My Love My Life on the piano in front of an audience at Clacton Salvation Army Hall! The layered vocals were meant to imitate I’m Not In Love by 10cc. Fernando and Happy Hawaii are bonus tracks, and weren’t included on the original LP. Arrival was the final track. I think it’s just loads of layered up synths. Happy Hawaii was originally the B side of Knowing Me Knowing You and in brackets they put ( early version of Why Did It Have To Be Me) because that’s what it was.

What a nice surprise when I came across this video with your review to ABBA's album "Arrival"! thank you very much!
I have several things that come up to share
The first thing is that it is the first time that you listen to ABBA in a global way and not for some isolated and popular song like "Dancing Queen" I value that a lot, your open attitude I also like your aptitude for analysis, added to your more relaxed posture and your generosity to dedicate yourself and dedicate time Your analysis and review is very much enjoyed
Now I'm going to the most specific of the album "Arrival"
before I tell you that I think it is the album that has the most individual videos to see ABBA perform in a TV show or official promotional videos (except for the instrumental "Arrival", which appears in the background music in the special "ABBA in Poland")
"Arrival" is ABBA's consecration as a pop music group In my opinion, all the tracks are at least acceptable, due to the ability of the ABBA composers (the bearded keyboardist Benny and the guitarist Björn) to create catchy melodies to show off the beautiful voices of their also beautiful interpreters (the blonde Agnetha and the brunette Frida)
I give you an important clarification of context: up to now ABBA's compositions were based on music, the lyrics always came later, as Swedes it was difficult for them to write in English, and the ladies singing with swedish acent in their first days, included their famous and icónic perfomance in Eurovisión Song Contest 1974 with "Waterloo"
(In the next "ABBA The Album" there will be a greater bet on lyrics and openness to other genres)
I agree with you on the best songs, the three chosen as singles "Dancing Queen" and "Knowing me knowing you" were #1 and "Money money money" #3 in the UK (as well as success in several other countries around the world)
But I also include the beautiful ballad "My love my life" in the Top 3 of "Arrival", because it is the best ABBA lovesong (also heartbroken song) and the interpretation of the blonde Agnetha as the lead voice is sublime (there is a video in which sees her alone act it)
I don't have songs that I don't like, the 'less good' would be "Dum dum diddle"
And my favorite moment or phrase is the end of "My love my life", for melody lyrics and wonderful performance by soprano vocalist Agnetha Fältskog
I also agree in the importance of the general production in all the songs of the album
ABBA have been very perfectionists of their work until the song was finished to full satisfaction
They included the "wall of sound" technique in the recordings to give their music another punch
(On their tours they brought musicians and an additional choral trio to maintain the level of excellence of their recordings)
Another of ABBA's trademarks is the great use of contrasts, between lyrics and music or the melody itself.
"Knowing me knowing you" is the example of a 'heartbreaker lyrics' with a very catchy melody
and chorus or the melodic bridge in the dizzying "Tigre"
One more thing important is that in the original edition of "Arrival" álbum (1976) wasn't included the two last songs,
because "Fernando" was released as a single and included in the first recopilation álbum "Greatest Hits" (1976), both before "Arrival" album,
and "Happy Hawaii" was only a B-side of a single, not included in any original ABBA albums
For me "Arrival" is a masterpiece of pop music by ABBA , in my Top 3 of all Their albums
My suggestion is to review the previous álbum, the selftittled "ABBA" (1975)
and after these, review the follow album, tittle "The Álbum" (1977), most versatily
all three are my Top 3 and the Podium of all ABBA albums
Thank you again forma these great review and reaction to ABBA music
and ser you in the next vídeo
My best regards from Buenos Aires, Argentina (South América)

My Love My Life was inspired by 10cc's I'm Not In Love. To this day, it is my favourite ABBA song. Agnetha has always done melancholy well. She feels what she is singing. You can actually hear the pain in her voice. The vocal here is outstanding, and when she hits those high notes I get goosebumps.

Arrival was the 3rd vinyl album I got when I was about 10 years young. Don't remember if I got it as a present, or bought it myself. I gave this exact vinyl to my now 10 year old daughter (whom I also gave a true old Lenco vinyl record player a year ago), and it's such incredible fun to notice how she experiences the value of this music now, at her age. It's an important influence to have, if you ask me. If you want to develop taste, later on in life, this is the album you need to know really well. Whenever I hear tracks like "My Love My Life" I just burst into tears, still. It's so powerful, musical bliss and lush, so deep and emotional. My memories kill me with that.

I was born after ABBA disbanded in early 80s. But like everyone else around me, I knew at least one ABBA song growing up and that was Dancing Queen. I never really thought to search out for more ABBA songs. Then, Mamma Mia came out and I got to learn more about other songs of theirs. Then, Mamma Mia 2 (the movie) came out and When I kissed the Teacher was among the very first songs in it. What a fun song!! That's when I started to search for their albums beyond the ABBA Hits CD I already owned. Such great musicians I have to say!! And it is very nice to see younger people listen to them.

The original vinyl album consisted of 10 songs, so "Arrival" was the outro. "Fernando" was released earlier that year as a single, but did not appear on one of the original vinyl albums. "Happy Hawaii" originally was the B-side of "Knowing Me Knowing You" released in 1977, and it was labeled as an early version of "Why Did It Have To Be Me" - the two songs share big parts of the melody. "Dancing Queen" and "That's Me" were released as a single in August 1976, whereas the whole album was available in November 1976.

It may sound like bagpipes in "Arrival" but there weren't. It's one of just two instrumentals ABBA made. The second one is called "Intermezzo No. 1" which is a nice one, too. "Arrival" did have s position on the album, though. It was the final track, which is kind of strange for the main title. "Fernando" and "Happy Hawaii" were not part of the original release. In fact, "Happy Hawaii" was an early version of what later became "Why did it have to be me".

Top five: DQ, Knowing Me, Knowing You, Money, Money, Money, Why Did it Have to Be Me?, When I Kissed the Teacher. I also very much enjoy That's Me, Arrival and Tiger and My Love, My Life have great elements to them. Dum Dum Diddle... well, no album is perfect. Obviously Fernando is epic and among my top five or ten for their whole career, but since it wasn't originally on the album, it doesn't count.

Fernando and Happy Hawaii were not on the original vinyal running order. Fernando only originally appeared on the first Greatest Hits album and was pushed by their manager Stig Andersson as a single reelase in preference to Dancing Queen. happy Hawaii was the B side to Knowing Me Knowing You (ithink could be wrong) it was actually an early version of Why Did It Have To Be Me. If you listen to them both the same tune is there although it was given a more Honky Tonk feel on WDIHTBM. Anni-Frid and Bjorn used to love doing it on stage and would really ham it up.

Voulez Vous was probably ABBA's most dancing disco, with a perfect 1970's vibe from beginning to end, it will always be my favorite one, although I do love all the others. Somebody suggested their last album, The Visitors, it's also awesome, but with a very serious dramatic tone. That album's theme song was probably the only time ever they got into politics, it's beautifully disturbing.

You're spot on about Wanderer by Dion there, in fact that intro sounds similar to lots of old blues songs! Anyway, I'd like to ask you, how easy is it for a native English speaker to understand ABBA's lyrics, especially when the girls are singing in harmony accompanied by an orchestra in full orgasm haha - It was a nightmare at first for me, English not being my mother tongue

Amazing reviews from you; fantastic! The high notes coming from female vocalists are high pitch sopranos, not falsettos because it is as in this case their true range. Men use falsetto but not too often. The most famous artist to do so is, Barry Gibb and the Bee Gees. And your falsetto on MONEY, MONEY, MONEY!

It might be interesting for you to check out their roots. I suggest you start with Annifrid the jazz singer from 1964 czcams.com/video/Q-PvF4HoYP8/video.html , Agnetha, the singer-songwriters self-penned 1967 debut and first number one hit czcams.com/video/OPoVDiBqhPQ/video.html , Bennys first song english, 1965 czcams.com/video/Y9vYFyu9gAo/video.html and finally Björns first hit in english probably 1966 czcams.com/video/EXIetlMknt8/video.html . Do you notice any relation to the album you reviewed?
