Preview season for Commander Legends started two weeks ago due to all the leaks. I feel bad for all the channels who were really looking forward to previewing a new card and it has already been spoiled.
I usually use reddit for all of the spoilers, but bc of the massive leaks, I think I’ll be making a special effort to go directly to the designated content creators this time, to boost traffic for them.
I have a feeling that fortunately, non of the spoilers had been distributed at that time ( because some folks started posting that they had got one about a week later) so there were just fewer to go around instead of anyone getting screwed.
My friend from out of state comes home for most holidays and last year I said for Christmas ill design a commander cube. Well now I don't have to because our group can pick up Commander Legends and live a new experience. Thanks Gavin!

This feels a bit awkward because about one third of the set is already leaked.
It’s ok though because most of the mythics haven’t been revealed yet, nor have most of the cards with the new mechanics.
My favorite format to play is draft, my second favorite way to play magic is commander. This is by far the most excited I've been for an MTG product.

Can't wait for this. Drafting in person isn't something I'm currently comfortable with, but I've pre-ordered two boxes to stash away for the day that in person play is safe to do. Those little guys are going to be taunting me from the top of a closet I'm sure.
Yes, absolutely! It's a bit tricky to do in real life right now - though sealed works great over something like Spelltable. And we also built everything out in Magic Online, which you can try as well. That said, the paper, in-person experience is the real highlight of everything. Hope you get to try it out sooner rather than later! :)
Perhaps a silly question but I’d assume your commander(s) are part of the 60 in same way its the commander and the 99. So 58 and 2 partners or 59 and commander?

Winston draft is the way to go for 2-4 players. It's everything strategic about while still only using 3 packs each

I am so glad you're excited!!! Ahhhh it's almost here!
I have drafted this set 4-5 times since Christmas, with just me, my brother, and my mom (Christmas was her first ever game). Three player CL draft works fine, and is still great fun. In fact, I am drafting it again this Sunday for my birthday celebration because we had so much fun, and this will actually be the first time we will have four players (everyone is vaccinated, so my best friend is joining us this time). Also, although it is okay fun to do the recommended 60 card draft, we had way more fun drafting the full 100 cards and building 100 card decks. For our four player on Sunday, since my friend is only joining us the once and a booster box only has so many card, we will be draft all 24 packs, so 6 each. I think this will leave us with many more options, and we won't face the situation where we are playing cards we don't really want to play, just because they are in our colors and we need 100 cards; with us drafting 120 and only using 63-64 for the deck, there is plenty of room in the sideboard for those type of cards.
Gavin, I really appreciate the decision to make legends that really pull you in a given direction rather than op ones.
It's something very important to me. I am not going to say there are no legends similar to what you've seen before or anything, but there are quite a few cards that pull you in different directions. :)
@@GoodMorningMagic you bring up an orthogonal point about similar legends--if similar, why not simply do a reprint? I suppose discussing this is the abstract is difficult. I can think of some legitimate reasons to print new, but similar cards (e.g., new at legendary, or tweaking from unplayable to playable). Are there other reasons in a set that has no planar or temporal restrictions? It generally seems like a waste of a new card slot, no?

First of all i love the idea of a commander draft format and am very happy you designed the Commander Legends set! I was wondering, now, shortly before the release of the Kamigawa Neon Dynasty set, do you think doing a Commander draft with the Neon Dynasty set can work and would be fun? My current idea is to give everyone 3 Draft boosters and 1 Collector booster in order to get to 60 cards and have the Collector booster to give everyone a decent chance to get a good legendary creature as possible commander. With knowing the content of the set, what would be your recommendation for a fun commander draft experience with the new set? Thanks!

U know y u couldnt use a 40 card likit is because everyone will mill out i have commander cube everyone milled out so i upped the count to 60 cards i cant wait for commander legends its going to upgrade my cube with it
Yes! I didn't get into every possible reason for every number, but this is a HUGE reason for not-40, especially with the amount of card draw and ramp you'll have.

Gavin have you tried an expanded draft (maybe 6 or 7 packs) with 100 card decks? Would be a longer and more expensive experience as you mentioned, but for commander lovers, I can see this being a worthwhile investment. Anything I’m missing that would make this difficult to pull off minus the added length of the event?
You could definitely do 100 cards, probably with 5 packs, definitely with 6. My two notes: The draft might feel a little old after a while and people are in their colors, and you will expect more duplicates in the decks. Other than that though, totally worth a try! Go for it! :D

It doesn't happen often, but it can happen if a color is really open. I've seen it happen a few times.
Gavin, you already answered this (kind of) in another comment, but I need to ask more specifically:
We are a Magic community in Bavaria and are running a League with all sorts of Formats. (Well, used to until everyone’s least favorite Virus came back)
We planned to do a Commander Legends draft and I really hoped that WotC would provide some kind of elaborate scoring system for the format. I. E. how to determine points for the players per Round, so you can run tournaments.
Any suggestions?
First of all, awesome to hear you from Bavaria! I love Germany and wish I could be back there for Essen right about now. Alas! Anyway, if I were to do it, I'd do it like:
Winner: 4 points
Second: 3 points
Third: 1 point
Last: 0 Points
And then you need some kind of tiebreaker for when two players die simultaneously. (Likely whoever has the closer-to-0 life total.)

Now that Commander draft is defined, any advice on how to make a regular premier set Commander draftable? Kaldheim looks to have a high enough as-fan of legends not to need help, but perhaps having a randomized set of Legends you "add" one or two of to each pack?
For various reasons, i didn't draft for the past... well, years.
Commander legends wil change that. At least one draft i'll do it for sure and, if the set is as good as i'm hyped for it, well, more than that!

You can partner a sengir with sengir, though then you are stuck in monoblack. :)

While I personally love stuff like that (even when I started playing, shortly after TSP got released and I loved it), many ppl are overwhelmed if a set has 20+ mechanics in it.
They want this product do be draftable with new-ish players as well, that's why they focused on reprints with few wild things.

You certainly can draft with 3 people, but it isn't going to be as engaging and there may be challenges opening up enough Legends. I won't stop you. :)

Not at al! Every pack has 2 legends to draft, and they tend to float around the table. You will have many, many shots at a legend. :)
I hope you will do a video on the content of the booster pack. Right now you are doing it again selling a product that people will invest hundreds of dollars without knowing what they are buying. We still don't know what are the odds of the rarity of the different slots of the booster pack.

The contents of draft booster packs are:
13 commons
3 uncommons
2 legends: either 2 uncommons, an uncommon and a rare, two rares, a mythic and an uncommon, or a mythic and a rare.
1 Nonlegendary* rare/mythic
1 random foil of any rarity, can even be legendary.
And of course... 1 ad/token. 😉
And about 1 in every 6 packs, the Prismatic Piper appears in place of a common.
(*By nonlegendary I mean not something that can be your commander. A legendary land could still appear here.)
@@GoodMorningMagic This does not indicate how the the 2 uncommon legends will be distributed compare to the rare and mythic. Does the set booster information that mythic are now distributed at 1 on 7,4 rare still is true? The random foil distribution is also not told. It is difficult to know how many boxes to buy when we have no idea of what it will look like in quantity at the end.

Is there any info on how to determine prize payout for an 8 person pod when drafting commander legends?
Up to whomever is running it! Two common ways would be giving each player a pack they can give to another player at the end of the game, or simply having a set payout for first, second, third, and fourth... keeping in mind that you will need a tiebreaker in case two players lose simultaneously!

(F2F) Normal Draft Scenario: You're decidedly not Red, but Pack 3, Pick 3 you see a lightning bolt and no on-color cards worth mentioning. Here, I think you hate draft; because the chance the on-color card will win you a game is low, but the chances the bolt will lose you a game is high.
(F2F) CL Draft Scenario: Pack 1, 2nd pick (Picks 3+4). Picks 1 +2 You took a bomb UR Commander, and a (R) Fireball variant. in this 2nd pack, you see a Lightning bolt and a Mana Leak; two strong limited cards in your archetype. Inexplicably, you also see two Partner commanders, off-color but strong. Which do you choose?
Here I think you strongly consider the Partners. Why? Two rationale: (1) it keeps you open in colors, but more importantly (2) it's a hate draft. In a 4 person draft, you're going to be playing everyone you draft against. There's a strong chance a player who would take these might run them as their commander. Now, your Lightning bolt kills that commander once. But hate drafting it might make them play Prismatic Piper, which is as good as casting Kenrith's Transformation on your opponent's commander FOR FREE... FOR EVER. In that one game of commander, you might never see that lightning bolt, but your opponent will ALWAYS see their commander.
Does this shake out in person? I can't say; while I understand some changes made for the format, others leave me baffled (Why isn't Prismatic Piper a 1/1 for 2 that taps for one mana of any of your commander's colors? A card that might reasonably see play in limited and some fringe constructed decks? Oh, because they didn't want the basic commander to feel "fun"... or "good"...). But if there's one thing I know, it's how to hate draft. Color identity makes splashing much harder, but in a commander game spot removal just isn't that good. It's all about the bombs, and there's nothing more bomby than your Commander. So hate drafting commanders not only helps leave you open, but as there's only every 2 legends per pack and you always get 2 picks, it's EASY to do. Imagine at the end of pack 1, you have 8 commanders and your opponents have none. Oops, looks like about half of them just botched their first pack, and you can run whatever you want.
I hope this format is good; but I seriously think it ignores how casual players, and first time drafters, actually draft. It's about rare drafting, and drafting cards you think are cool. A lot of these drafters will be stuck with Prismatic Pipers in their command zone, and maybe 30 playables.
Do you know how bad it feels to help a kid after their first draft and explain to them that they don't have a deck? Like this is $15 (Oh, wait, silly me, it's Commander Legends draft; it's like $40.) - that's a lot of money for a kid or teenager or college student. And I'm sitting there having to say "You know, maybe you need to splash a third color because you only picked up 8 on color creatures, and these healing salves just ain't gonna cut it." It's bad enough when they misread a mechanic; but when they just don't have enough creatures to make a deck it's painful. Fortunately modern design has quelled this concern a little (though every time there's 2+ commons in a color that are unplayable in limited; there's gonna be that new player who plays that deck and never drafts again), but color identity really limits a player's option here. What percentage of this is artifact creatures? I find myself having to hope it's like 25%+; and that's not a good place to be.

Biggest Strength: Partner Commanders. (Yeah, they should ALL be uncommon, and this should include 10 of the original 15 @ (U)... but that's a separate issue.)
Biggest Weakness: (R)/(M) that can't be your commander. You act like Prismatic Piper, a (C) which players will have... dubious access to... will be sufficient to let players play whatever colors they want; but you overlook the fact that COMMANDER decks are built around COMMANDERS. People want to be excited about their COMMANDER, to BUILD AROUND their commander. What this means is that every player must have an exciting commander in Pack 1, Pick 1. (Taking 2 at a time is good solution to partners, but ALWAYS taking 2 cards means no one sees a legendary creature past pick 2, meaning you can't even hope for (U) Partners to be passed to you.)
Seriously, I need you to imagine opening a non-commander (R) in your pack. Let's say one of the dual lands, or a really cool bomb. Do you take it over... your pack's 2 (U) Partners? I mean I guess you could take your Cyclonic Rift and (U) non-blue partner and just say "Cyclonic Rift is worth running Prismatic Piper as my commander", but is it? How bad are you going to feel if the next 4 legends you see in Commander Legends aren't blue?
To be clear, many players "rare draft", they take (R)s over cards they otherwise should take because... they're (R)s. However, here you've created a system where rare drafting when you don't open a commander is going to ruin your entire draft. WHY? WHY? If you needed to complete the Battlebond Cycle (and not in Battlebond 2?); why not make them (U)? You're already charging more per pack anyways; and at (U) players might be able to get a copy for each of their decks. And hey; I'm okay with lands @ (R) in normal sets - it's a great way to give casual players trade fodder. (What's that? You'll give me 10 rares for my Scryland? 100 rares for my Ravnica dual? COOL!) But this is your one, and likely only, chance to get Commander Draft to work... and you couldn't be bothered to bend pack contents SLIGHTLY to make it work.
Having drafted the format very extensively, this is not how it works at all. People pass a lot of legends. You will be able to find different colors of legends you're looking for. :)
Also worth noting is that a rare in your pack doesn't replace a rare legend. The legends drop independently of the rare/mythics.

Second, I am worried about the lack of transparency/accessibility here. It sounds like there's a dedicated (R)/(M) slot, and two dedicated Legends-slots, but the (L) slots work more like Timespiral Timeshifted cards than DOM-legends slots (which did push out a normal (R).
If you make booster packs "too different" (IE, collector booster, set booster, theme booster, gambling booster, pop booster, etc.), then players don't know what to expect, and you cannot clearly explain it to them. Take collector's boosters; they've been out for a year and it's a running joke that no one knows what's in them. Double Masters gave you 2 rares per booster. That's EASY to understand. Commander Legends sometimes gives you a (R) Legend, but not always, but always gives you 2 Legends, but not always with Partner, and always there's a (R) that's not a legend... that's not easy to understand.
As for people passing legends... I think this is a fantasy. Perhaps your playtesting is skewed by the fact it's "phantom" - people don't own what they take; but if each pack contains 2 (non "basic") legends, and everyone gets 2 picks, it's not hard to imagine people taking practically every legend they see, on color or not.
Suppose pack 3 I open Muldrotha, and incredibly popular commander, but not one in my colors. Even setting aside the price, isn't it worth hate drafting this first pick, alongside whatever the best piece of on-color removal is? Players ALWAYS have access to their commanders; but I will only occasionally have access to the non-commander card I might take in it's place.
Now suppose Pack 1 I open Muldrotha and Prosh... which do I pass? Clearly neither; I take them both and then see what gets passed to me. Pack 2 I open Muldrotha and Prosh, which do I pass? Clearly neither, and frankly one is still probably gonna be my commander. But Pack 3 I open Muldrotha and Prosh... and I have a pretty solid UR Commander deck I'm building and can't feasibly shift to either? I still take them both.
Long story short? When thinking about how a Commander Draft would work, I assumed 15 card packs @ normal pack price (IE, don't self-sabotage by making your experimental new product expensive), with each (R)/(M) being a 2+ color legendary creature, and maybe half of the (U)s being Partners. I wouldn't have a dedicated slot. In short, every pack would have 2.5 legends on average, and with you getting 1 pick per pack, they'd be passed more often. (And yeah, I imagined a special rule that would let you - once per draft - take a commander publicly while taking a 2nd, private, card... effectively solving the partner issue.). @UCXBniLoE1QWbIzfHail4NQQ Every pack has 2 legends, but you can't draft around commanders you haven't picked yet; so either (a) you gamble on using basic legend, strictly worse Hill Giant, prismatic piper, or you go with the random 2 legends you open, and blindly build around them.
Color identity restrictions also prevent you from switching to an open color, unless - again - you're going to be running Prismatic Piper.
As for your non-spoiler spoilers, I've seen the same spoilers you have, and while most partners have been better than the stinker DOM (U) Legends, they''re not all created equally. Anyone who opens Muldrotha or Korvold or the like is probably going to win, as any given pair of partners ain't gonna cut it against them. And the power level, or lackthereof, of the commons really stands out.
