My grandpap (and many others) used to do all this shit back in the day and it was considered normal and even necessary to eat well or even to eat at all. It's pretty sad that today it's considered "extreme".
You are a 24-month old urinal cake. If you're neighbors piss you or your visitors off because of they way his/her property looks, you have to move somewhere where you have no neighbors. It's all part of living in a neighborhood. If neighbors do not suit your lifestyle, then move to a richer neighborhood or move to the boonies.

That's great Curtis, I put a hoop house up in our front yard this year for the home base plant nursery -on a very similar urban street. I now have several requests from neighbours to help them get a tunnel up in their yards. Really like the end bow design @45 and will incorporate on my next cat tunnel. Having two double rows & one walkway would be a good way to offset the cost on such a short tunnel.

If I was your neighbor you could do what ever you want. I would just be thrilled to have someone with a brain and such a good heart living on my street.

Be careful what you wish for, you might just end up with a waste treatment plant next door....that's why they have by-laws and zoning....to prevent people "from doing what they want".....If you allow urban farming, you could end up with someone who wants to keep hogs, on his front lawn.....and believe me, you do NOT want that....I worked on a pig farm, you'd need to wear a gas mask 24/7
Thanks a ton for the tips. I set up a small tunnel in my garden this month, 18 feet by 6 feet, only to have the wind promptly rip the polly and 3/8 inch by 10 foot pvc hoops from the rebar stakes. I did not rope it down. Now, I may go back to do it right. Also, I will use the 45 degree end hoops and anchors.

my mom had a victory garden during wwII. after the war, neighbors started stealing so she grew flowers out front and food out back ... we also kept hens out back up untill the early 70s, then the city banned chicken keeping because neighbors complained ... they smile in your face then they hate behind your back

in 1917 it was a federal mandate to have a victory garden and a minimum of 8 chickens if you had a yard of 1/8th of an acre or larger and it has never been repealed or at least I have not been able to find anything showing it was repealed

I just started a garden in my front yard and I was worried about my neighbor's reactions. I've been pleasantly surprised to get nothing but positive feedback and to have more interactions with neighbors and even the mailman than ever before. I'm sure they're hoping for a little share of the bounty. ;)
What aggravates me is when I am trying to a basic home improvement project or even something as simple as cutting the grass and some pesky old man neighbor wants to come up and tell me how I am doing it all wrong. They stand back and watch for around 20 minutes then finally come up and give their 'expert advice'. GTF out of here!

The self tappers have a recommended rpm for use which is usually low that's why going full rpm doesn't work well and doing a few quick bursts did. When you pull the trigger on the impact it's trying to go from 0-3200rpm when the self tapper needs a slower few hundred rpm to catch the metal and cut through it. A drill that you can control the rpm would be a better suited tool for the job.

Hahaha, today for the first time my neighbors have noticed my tomato plants, I kind of messed up and made a 6x6 bed and its hard to access the middle of my bed and my 11 tomato plants are out of control. But i finally have tomatos growing and my neighbors were very impressed with my little tomato jungle.the plants are about 4 1/2 to 5 feet tall

thanks and guess what happened today, my 6x6 tomato mini jungle just took a beating from high winds :(. I was about to put up a wooden structure up on Saturday my day off, they just grew to fast and outgrew the walmart tomato cages. well now i got a bunch of clones for new plants. that means i get to make a new bed 4x4.
Homer Martinez oh no, sorry to hear that:( you might be able to root some cuttings and get a head start, better than from starting from seeds again (or save money from buying plants). I'm still getting snow where I am but will be starting my seeds soon. I'm looking at making a mini hoop house to extend the season (utah mountains). good luck!

Great video, I just found your channel and it looks like it may be really helpful to us as we grow our little homestead in the city. I would worry about people ruining my garden if I had it in our front yard. Do you ever have any trouble with that?
MiniSteading i I've found lining the perimeter with taller flowers helpful(cosmos can grow especially tall with a bit of manure)plus it brings in beneficial insects

Great video. Your blessed that your neighbors don't say anything with the caterpillar in front of your house. They would in my neighborhood. In fact many towns/cities no longer allow gardens in the front yard and some the back.
I grew up in a city where (usually) Italian & Asian families grew and continue to, grow magnificent veg gardens right along with flower gardens. I can still remember the taste of beautiful huge tomatoes, zucchini, crisp lettuce and other veg kindly given to my Mum by our neighbours. It is a happy sight when walking about ... people stop to chat, share gardening tips or simply to show appreciation. Just because some people have forgotten what being a neighbour is - doesn't negate people who do.
You are so fortunate to live in that community I live in a very rural area so no issues here with what I do on my property but so many Urban areas have hundreds of you can't do that rules. I've got to do some research on these Caterpillar tunnels I have a 16X20 hoop house but might be able to find room for one of these.
They do exist in Kelowna, they're called "neighbourhood associations"
Thankfully they mostly keep themselves to the rich areas on the hills.

I love to chat neighbours and people i meet. I used to really find it difficult. Then I realized how much I can learn from everyone around me. I love stories and everyone has a story. If I hear stories about mistakes others make, it helps me not make the same mistakes. Plus if I know someone who has a lot of knowledge about something I'm interested in, I love to chat them. It's actually a great compliment when someone takes time out of their busy day (and we're all busy) to talk to you and take an interest in you. Maybe they just use what you're doing as an excuse to get to know you?

In response to the title of this video, I'd come ask questions too if you put that stuff up in my neighborhood.
I would not call the cops as many Americans may but would actually be rather impressed. As much of an eye sore as it is to my perspective though, you really have to expect neighbors to stop by and bother you with questions; that's normal for now.
Good for you on utilizing every square inch of your property to grow food. It is truly something to behold, copy, and spread around. Hopefully one day very soon, my perspective and the majority of our country's perspective, will see this as perfectly normal. Because it should be normal.

Steve Rahtz -- HOA's are a pain in the butt! However, they are fantastic for keeping the value of the homes relatively high compared to non-HOAs! American homes are extremely expensive and many people will sacrifice a small amount of freedom in order to protect their investment. When purchasing homes that cost over 500k (SoCal avg) you would not want your eccentric neighbors painting their homes pink, purple, green etc... With 3ft weeds growing in the front lawn, flashing neon Coors sign over front door, X-mas lights still up and running in June, with 12 flamingos littered around the front lawn, would you?
RE:Bacnow. And why would you want your property value high? So you can pay more taxes? Or are you planning to move soon? That's why cities have all those property laws so they will have more tax money to waste.
I don't necessarily want them to, no. However, I don't spend more than 5 seconds looking at my neighbors lawns each day. They're hardly even a part of my world. If I get upset about THEIR property, it's because I chose to, not because it ACTUALLY hinders my life in any way. In other words, it's petty to complain about what other people do with THEIR property. If I want to paint my car a million colors and put a spoiler the size of a bookshelf on it, that's my business, because it's MY car. Why should my home be any different? A home is not an investment opportunity. It's a place that you and your family live in. It should be as comfortable as possible for you specifically, not for your neighbors. If you buy a home just so you can make money down the line, you're bad at investing anyway. Houses are the WORST investments you can make.

This use to happen at my brothers farm in Ontario all the time, it actually got annoying and time consuming dealing with the "gawkers" so of coarse we made a joke out of it saying pretty loudly "SHOW US YET GAWK!!" Very Canadian neighbors. It's a complete gamble to try something like this in suburbs here. I know where my mother lives any time she did anything the neighbors were calling someone. Hopeing my neighbors don't mind my yard conversion soon, though I don't plan to go quite as industrial.

HI BOB Here. did a lot of pre engineered steel bldgs' 'Like your video so far. just a few things about tech screws, & amps on the gun, First, if you don't have enough muscle [AMPS] At least [4 Amps] more is better. As they torque out, stop & reverse, back out about half the length of the screw. NOW Fowrad gear again. IF it stops again-[RINSE & REPEAT] a few times should do the trick. Also not a very good shot at what im guessing is a hardened steel screw with close threads callled a STUCTURAL SCREW. Great for connecting solid steel up to about 1/2". A drill [ESPICALLY] a cordless is a handy tool to have around. BUT, you need muscle . Most only have high R.P.M. 's High speed, low torque. Good for drywall, No good for steel. GREAT PROJECT. Hope I could help some. RESPOND PLEASE & THANK'S [RABID BOB]

I'm noticing a lot of people telling this guy to move to the country if he wants to grow his own food. Incase you guys haven't noticed, rural areas get absorbed by cities every day and as a result, become subject to city ordinances. Sure it may take a while but I can almost guarantee that even if he lived in a more rural area, some guy would eventually be knocking on his door telling him it's against city ordinances to have x, y, and z on his property.
This happens in agricultural land all of the time. Watch my video "Everything I want to do is illegal" and i'll tell you about a specific case with that as well.
I think that its very educational and a great example to garden where people can see and learn about self sufficiency again. Most people haven't grown a thing they've eaten in their lives. With the price of food especially healthy organic food being so high more people need to keep gardens to eat healthy.

I tried building green house on the side of my house, but the wind kept blowing the plastic off. thank you for sharing. how do use the c clamps with the plastic?
You could also use pieces of PVC as clamps, I've seen that done on other people's tunnels.
Dude this is coming from a guy who has done carpenter for 35 years, always, always get the 18 volt drill, the battery last and gives so much more power, Milwaukee the best and will keep for 30 years or more!! Good luck!!

Ever thankful for your inspiration. Managed to farm all the food I needed last year and reallocate all the money saved to start my farm. How much capital did you have to start with? I should be able to reallocate 10 000 by the end of this summer. Should I do the same for another year and save a buffer or start part time?

We make ours by driving in a star picket post either side and then loop over a piece of agriculture poly pipe. 10 years now we have the same warm house except for the covering.

How is the belt anchored into the ground at both ends? Just rebar, or did you bury something wide? I'm imagining U-shape bent rebar in a concrete block, that would resist a lot of wind force pulling upward.
Just a rebar with a hoop on the end to clip to. Rebar on 45 degrees. I show it in the video.

you can buy galvanized and non-galvanize self-tapping with any head on it any dimension in volume of any size super easy in the US. Anywhere else it's a headache..
Use a clove hitch for webbing to bows. Easy to adjust and strong.
Every European migrant to Australia in the 50s and 60s would partition their backyards (and sometimes their front) to grow veggies. My mum and dad grew stuff year-round. Their tomatoes were delicious (much better than store bought) and so were their onions, carrots, zucchini, pumpkin and water melons. My mum would cook up veritable feasts from all the veggies but my favourite was when she'd take the pumpkin and zucchini flowers, lightly crumb them and fry them in olive oil. Just yummy!
