Cold Air Intake VS No Air Filter

- In our previous episode we made more power with a Cold Air Intake on the Honda S2000. But Marty wants to know if it’s the whole intake thats affecting power, or just the air filter...

I was also curious about a dirty filter messing with the results , glad you did this, thumbs up
Beat wake up in France : alarm ringing at 7 to wake up and go to work, open one eye, notification of a new MCM vidéo -> instantly awake !! Thanks guys !
So the Dyno has proven a gain of at the least 4-6 hp with the aftermarket short ram intake. I can live with that. Thank you for actually posting this video and proving a question I have been pondering.
Glad you guys checkex it. Good to know. Cheers.
im glad you guys actually showed this instead of just tossing the footage
Great job guys- scientific methodology ftw. Beats the nobs out there who think everything they change on their car equals more power. Why not mythbust all the crap that is sold for fuel economy? Had a nob customer at repco trying to tell me that he got heaps of improvement in fuel economy by adding a magnet to his fuel lines which 'aligned the molecules'. My skeptical alarm almost broke
the science is overwhelming my science molecules!!! I FEEL SO ALIGNED!!!!!!
When I worked at Pep Boys, a customer was going on about how ZMax and that tornado intake bullshit worked wonders and gave him more power. Funny how people like that spend so much money on garbage. At the truck stop I work at now we sell this 3000D crap that's supposed to give better fuel economy and more power with a fucking magnet. I haven't seen anyone buy that crap from my shop yet...
rejzor Nah man if you want some crazy power led lights wont help. you've gotta turn on your AC, The fans blowing air at you pull the car forwars, almost like a jet engine. If you want to add some more horsepower to that just paint some flames on your car.
Magnets do in fact cause polarities to align, so that's not the issue that should have set off your alarm.
LOL there's always someone who thinks they know best aye! I also love it when you get someone asking for an oil filter for a white toyota... "WHAT KIND OF FUCKING TOYOTA!?!?!?!"
Thanks guys. Really appreciate the extra science. Still not sure about a cold air intake on my rx-8 though.
Congratulations on one million!
What happened to the Rattle Can paint jobs and fake Brembo Cover Mods we all love so much?
Well, it does look tacky.
As a car myself I would hate it.
They are slowly proving my theory about cold air intakes.
If you have a low displacement car, a CAI won't make any difference. The more displacement, or high performance the engine is, the more a CAI will benefit the car. I'd love to see them do this test with a 4.0L engine, or something around that size to see what kind of change they get.
It's good that you did this extra test... It shows you're trying to rule out any possibilities.
You didn't find anything in this instance, but it was still worth looking for... :)
I would just like to add something I forget to mention on the last video. SOME CAI systems do need calibration. For example, some kits have a larger diameter housing for the MAF sensor and when this is the case, the computer may think that there is less air going into the engine because the air is being pulled through a larger diameter area than the factory MAF housing.
A whole minute 40 video, you spoil us ambassador
Nice quick video. Thank you
Great vid guys!
Well cant wait to see that episode. Definitely bummed that I wasn't able to make the meet while you 2 were here in l.a. tho
love the dig at the end haha
Awesome vid guys
I think they should do a removal DIY for that vinyl graphic :)
Cool video.
Short and simple and i learned something.
+1
I love your Honda s2000
The sharp edge left by the open piping in the box will account for a considerable flow loss. With the cone filter on, that sharp edge turns into a small radius inside the cone, improving flow.
Awesome feeling too get the CZcams notification at 1am that MCM uploaded a video! Who needs sleep
Amen! Hahaha
I know right.
Haha same it woke me up in the middle of the night.
WE NEED MORE VIDS GUYS!
this video was so
...
CHILL
In my opinion the gains are caused by positioning the filter out of the engine bay. The stock s2000 airbox has no direct way to get fresh air because is it is directly mounted on top of the radiator. You can get aftermarket a "snorkel" that helps to prevent this problem. Would be great to see if this would have some effect on the power.
MCM posts a video every like 3 months. It takes forever. I realize it takes a long time to edit, get a location, and people to help out. But it does take a long time. They should plan ahead
Watch Moog, cause Marty gunna blow YA doors off with the MX5
Go Team Marty 👍
Thanks for sharing.
All I got in my 1996 Honda Accord SW is a K&N Air Filter. I am also using a K&N Oil Filter. It puts out a decent amount of power without kicking in V-Tec.
You guys need to stress more that the ECU of modern cars is the limiting factor. A stock ECU has a set value of 'normal operating procedure' where it will inject fuel based on AIT (air intake temperature), MAP/MAF (air pressure or air flow or both), Knock, and O2 sensor readings.
So your honda is basically saying... hey, something is different..
If you want 'bolt on parts' to actually work, start with the ECU. Spend the cash up front, and everything after will work better.
I think they covered that in their last video. That's why they did multiple runs.
Highly Recommend you guys read some books from 'motorbooks workshop' series. Real knowledge
...sorry, Maaaad knowledge. I'm Canadian, forgive my lack of slang.
walperstyle They covered it in the first episode as previously stated. Even stock ECU's adjust themselves to changes, just not as aggressively as an aftermarket ECU.
Exactly, its a 'normal operating mode'. If you throw a turbo on that honda, and larger injectors, guarantee its going to go in some kind of 'limp mode'.
walperstyle This isn't about ECU's it's just about the Intake that's it, The stock ECU will do the job fine there is no need for a after market one in moog's car. They have tuning fork there with more knowledge than you i think.
The Honda s2k will respond to aftermarket intake systems and moderate street exhaust system upgrades (maintaining OEM dual design and O2 sensors), in terms of power. I have seen them lose power, however, when too many components are replaced.
Was there a fan on to simulate driving on the road? Adding the factory air filter set up, it has front air ducts to capture air flow while driving. Compared to a cold air intake has the engine bay air to suck from since its not in a box like the factory filter.
You answered my question thanks
Mcm is the best!
you guys should have done the same test with the air box cover lid off. Im sure the small airbox opening robs the power. Car feels better with the lid a bit open on full WOT. might be subjective but whatd your thoughts?
The filter does not effect the size of the inlet side of the airbox. The reason some cold air filters work is they have an open filter. Open the lid of the box and run it again.
I found the S2k makes the most power over any aftermarket intake with the stock tube/filter and the lid removed! Give it a go!
dat reaction his face was priceless lol
Good Job guys! but my question is... Talking about air intake sistems... What appen to an off-road cars with a Snorkel fitted? How much difference it will make on our big torque optimized turbo diesel engnines?
You guys should do octane boosters next.
Rotaries are 3 cycle engines. Not 2 or 4. There's 3 sides to a dorito.
1 is intake.
2 is compression/detonation.
3 is exhaust.
Not sure what this has to do with the video, but it's literally in your description that it's 4 strokes. 2 is compression and 3 is detonation (and expanding that detonation to do something with it). Then 4 is exhaust.
Or maybe this is just a misinformation meme.
I love how Marty really hates that beastly s2000
Come on guys do a video on the rx8 intake . would me nice to see .:-)
Maybe should try a ITB set up in comparison of everything
Just wondering because I couldnt see it in the clip but was there a fan replicating real driving conditions?
I keep refreshing the page for the new episode where Marty gets CHOPPED!
can you make a video how to instal remote startup
Nice
Awesome!
I feel like the biggest bang for your buck horse power mod is nitrous. I'm not talking about need for speed flames out the back type deal, but actual real nitrous. I wish you guys would do a 75 shot and dyno it and give us numbers. Nitrous kits are easy to instal and a more expensive one would only run you about as mush as an eBay turbo $800!!
what about a water cooled intake for naturally aspirated engines... would that give more chuchuu to the engine?
cheers!
Now I wonder how it would respond to a larger throttle body with a slight tune if a simple cai is giving him gains.
i dont run an air filter on my car but it is a turbo so it can pull in alot more air plus my headers are custom made so that the turbo sticks out though a cutout on my bumper
That car sound like my wifes hairdryer
Something may be wrong with the hair dryer then. Good thing she doesn't run it long enough to hit vtec else your house would get blown down with the force of all those unicorns farting at once.
prestigious0 Lmfaoo
prestigious0 hahaha
prestigious0 Rofl.
There are some things you should consider. I'm pretty sure the dyno adds some noise to the sound in this video and the fact that the mic is positioned in front of the car takes away a great deal from the exhaust note. Yes, this might be more or less the sound you hear from the outside but these cars are really not meant to impress pedestrians. When you actually drive one and use the entire rev range it sounds really good.
I don't know why there's so much hate for Hondas. They are doing their own thing and they are good at it.
saw my phone and i had to jump out of bed for this
Yes but what about running the aftermarket cold air intake with no filters??
It all depends on the type of engine and tune. Some engines do better with stock airbox some do better with free flowing CAI. Try same test on a different car and different results, stock might give better power.
I have a k and n air filter on my BMW E60 should I swap it with the cone style filter? does anyone know which one will make more power??
Test the phelmic gaskets to that prevent heat soak temperatures.
Sneaky Marty!
hi, is there any way you can compare power in the whole rev ramge for short ram vs cold air?
mighty Car Mods....will you do a MOPAR SLANT SIX Turbo build !!!!
Hi! Is possible see a test with bmc cda filter?? Thanks!
when I was about to go to sleep and this happen
Hey guys do you think a visit to new York is in your near future?
Love your work guys i was in supercheap auto today and i was looking at a heat shield wrap and it said on the back that it increases your horsepower i was wondering if you guys could mythbust to see if its true or not.
it may if you have a turbo, as the higher temp gases getting closer to the turbo will increase the apparent pressure and movement of the air, but if you have a limitation on boost this will of course just make it so the spool time is shorter due to hotter gases. heat shielding is a good thing to have for safety and for heating up the cat for emmissiosn though, so go for it.
Does moog have a bit missing out of his stripe?
Haha, I also noticed that in their last video.
Hi, guys. how about intake induction system kit?
You must check it with Mazda MX-5 or Subaru Liberty and tell about it.
Thanks. Vladlen Vilicci.
lol chopped. a NA S2000 kept up with that turbo mx5. pretty well. both of you guys need to do some more work! more videos! lets make them both faster!
so.. factory air box is better for SOME cars but for others a pod filter is better... or is that only because it's in a cold air location...
T1000AX depends on what the engine was made for. If It's supposed to be fuel efficient engine a aftermarket intake may harm the ponies, if It's a performance engine, you'll have a smile on your face.
Do cold air intake with and without a velocity stack!
Completely off topic here but, What are marty and Moogs day jobs? Have they stated it before and i missed or or not?
That car was just not complete until the long tea towel vinyl decal was installed. It needed that racing stripe or pin striping to be drivable I guess ROTFL.
Where can I buy the hat you are wearing? The crown looks like the crown logo From a watch I own and though it was cool.
but what if you just rip it all off & just run basically nothing straight to the throttle body? I mean might as well, right? Since it doesn't cost anything & the car is a fairly budget build anyways.
Sic mate
Guys you really need to take into account the engines coolant temperature and the temperature variation over the whole of the motor especially the difference between the temp in the top hose compared to the temp in the bottom hose
I want to see a decent video about installing NOS on a Honda S2000. Will it make more horsepower? Lets find out!
you guys should do a video on nitrous
Do a Individual throttle body test.
not sure well try doing some maintenance and see if it gains more power probably or you guys should seriously do some ecu tuning like what marty did to his mx5
Have a MCM meet in Bellevue Wa USA
U should do a car audio build.
nice work guys. I have seen the K&N filters inside the original box without the top cover on some cars, I try it on my S2000 and it felt like it lost power that way, do you have any idea why is it?. right now I have set up with the K&N filter inside the original air box. thanks for your show
Probably due to the hot air from the engine..cover it will avoid the hot air temp air
More s2000 stuff your s2000 is going to own marty again
Why not include this in yesterday's video?
boom, the myth has just been sloved
Yes, but what about crappy and economical air intakes, like on a Toyota Platz?
When's the next one coming out ?
someone probably said this already, but the s2k ecu was probably retarding timing to compensate for the extra airflow. you would lose power without a/f tuning.
Hello mighty car mods i am your BIGGEST fan and i was wondering is you can mod a Pontiac bonnieville 1994 and make it mad thank you
I hear that oil based filters like k&n filters are ultimately bad for your car...... is this true?
Cihan Ugur - Specially on modern cars it's quite common for sensors being affected (MAF). In particular because of the oil film deposit which might lead to incorrect readings.
When I got a new project a couple of years ago the K&N that came in was replaced ASAP with a decent "normal" filter...I kept the sticker. LOL ;-)
I believe the K&N it's still around in the garage/workshop somewhere, but will never run in any of my projects. ;-)
Club going up
Do you guys have the fan on?
Cooooooool
Touch me Martin!!
Why no fan in front of the car for the tests?
but i thought you guys mentioned this kinda thing before, its the ECU adjusting itself isn't it?
its adjusting for more air. theres more air, so ecu says "oh crap i dont want to lean out" and vomits a bunch of unicorn juice from his rectumous maximous to compensate. more unicorns = more power
what if stuff goes inside of it; like rocks, water, debris and dust?
