"Natto" is stinky beans with goey texture and very stretchy. Japanese eat it with rice. It's like the vegemite / marmite of Japan; you either love it or hate it. I personally find it weird, but not bad.😅

If you want to guess what season 2 and 3 will be like, I suggest you check out the Wikipedia entry for Siege of Osaka. It explains the background as follows:
"When Toyotomi Hideyoshi died in 1598, Japan came to be governed by the Council of Five Elders, among whom Tokugawa Ieyasu possessed the most authority. After defeating Ishida Mitsunari in the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600, Ieyasu essentially seized control of Japan for himself and abolished the council."
(Season 1 is based on the events leading up to this point.)
"In 1603, the Tokugawa shogunate was established with its capital at Edo. Hideyoshi's son Toyotomi Hideyori and his mother Yodo-dono were allowed to stay at Osaka Castle, a fortress that had served as Hideyoshi's residence. Hideyori remained confined to the castle for several years. In addition, as a mechanism of control, it was agreed that in the year 1603 he would marry the daughter of Tokugawa Hidetada, Senhime, who was related to both clans. Ieyasu sought to establish a powerful and stable regime under the rule of his own clan. Only the Toyotomi clan, led by Hideyori under the influence of Yodo-dono, remained an obstacle to that goal..."
It's not entirely original. The book was based on real historical facts with slight omissions. So if they make two more seasons, the writers will have a baseline to create interesting storylines as the story progresses. John was based on a real life person. Almost every character in Shogun was based on real-life people who lived in the Edo period.
GOT past a certain season, the writers really tried to wing it. That's why the story and quality of the writing went downhill past that point.
No, the Novel is based on historical events with names changes, some events changed and based on real people and new. The Latter 2 new seasons will be based on historical events written in the same manner as the novel. It's new material following the book. The writers are trying to closely match the book and events to give us a semi-biographical fictional retelling of the Shogunate.
Personally, I would like to see the Siege of Osaka depicted!
I would also like to see stories from the past, such as the Honnoji Incident, from the era of Oda Nobunaga (Kuroda-sama) and Toyotomi Hideyoshi (Taikoo-sama)!
I hope the season continues and we get to see more great productions produced by Hiroyuki Sanada.

The novel is based on real history and Ieyasu Tokugawas rise to power, after the books there is plenty of history they can use, most importantly the siege of Osaka.os

For more shows/movies that have the theme of "stranger in a strange land", there's Frank Herbert's Dune (now Dune 1 & 2 by Dene Villeneuve), Dances With Wolves (Kevin Kostner movie), and the Kung Fu tv series (1972-1975). A Shaolin monk in the Old West (circa 1870). The pilot movie for that series was Kung Fu: The Way of the Tiger, The Sign of the Dragon. Glad you are enjoying Shogun. It's definitely quality tv.

the novel is based on real historic events. So after the book you just have to follow what happend in that period and the series will be fine, its not like game of thrones wich was complete fiction.
Shogun is based off a novel that is based off real life events. William Adams (John Blackthorne) was the first Englishman (as we know) to visit Japan. SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!!!!: He never left Japan and was buried in Tokyo.

I just need to point out a philosophical issue I have with "making something original" when it's from an already made source.... it's not. Just, not.
What it is, is legally binding contracts, and copyrights. They are allowed the use of the characters, their likeness. Nothing in it says you need to be "faithful" to the original. (fair enough)
Regardless, original, it is not since they have to leap off the shoulders of giants, and into the pit of "suck" where most money grabbing, hooked nose frogs take their "piggy" to "market" knowing its going to be slaughtered.
Sometimes they do justice and stay faithful... but I couldn't tell you what has done that in the last 10 years.
Not even How to Train Your Dragon was faithful to the books! they just bought the rights, and flipped the script.
There is plenty of original Japanese history that follows the timeline and story of Shogun. For example, the character of Noburu (Mariko's husband) lives on, is remembered as a great warrior, and actually outlives all of the other principal characters. And the real basis for Blackthorne's characters does some...well, I don't want to spoil anything else.
