I dont understand how Carson wasn't more aware of his surroundings knowing he was going up against chigur
That’s his character. He doesn’t really give a shit
i think the fact he found the money made him feel over confident and made his mind elsewhere. Probably also thought since he was injured he'd have some time.

It proves Anton is a pointless character
@@xxxxpandaxxxx how so?
Carson faced death with a respectable level of composure. He pleaded for his life and showed fear, sure, but he didn't become pathetic.
Wrong. He sold out his dignity the moment he tried (pathetically) bargaining for his life by offering to take Chigurh to an ATM. Chigurh even calls him out on it.

The way Anton says “An ATM” While smiling is such a big fuck you to Carson. That man doesn’t care about money and cannot be reasoned with.
True, also Anton won't be bought for $14 grand if the satchel is almost 2 million.
@@67marlins The funny part is Carson even said to Llewellyn earlier that Anton would kill him even if he returned the money. Carson knew this wouldn't work but tried anyways to fool Anton with such a cheap trick. And Anton knew Carson knew, hence the "cut this crap, there would be more dignity in it" kind of attitude.
He’s almost like a terminator, aside from the fact he’s not indestructible.

The way Anton responds "you mean the nature of this conversation?" tells me he's completely unaware of how insane his actions truly are. A true psychopath, blissfully unaware of how truly dettached from reality he is.
I actually think he’s so perfectly aware of himself that he’s even already past answering with “of course i’m aware of how crazy you consider me to be”.

It was not undignified. Sure he felt overwhelming fear, naturally, and gave it a shot at discussing and negotiating things. But he didn’t scream, cry, babble, beg or prostrate himself. Composed, collected, clear, even somewhat defiant and brave in the face of that psychopathic tension. Down to the inevitable end.
IMO Carla-Jean handles it far more like a boss. Doesn't try the whole stupid ATM trick. She did not even know Chigurh, so had no time to prepare what she would say to him.

@@AlphaQHard because self preservation doesn’t let you suicidally make some desperate final charge. That 100% seals your fate and hastens it. Very well put, starring death in the face tells what you are made of.
I like how he waits till the phone starts to ring before shooting him. So it’ll muffle the sound even more. That’s just even more cold
Dunno why but this death felt particularly brutal even though it's mostly obscured.
I know dude, just watched it for the first time last night and it was insane
it's the buildup
Probably in part due to the double fake. Carson is introduced and he seems like someone who might stand up to Anton and then just a handful of scenes later he is swallowed up like so many others by the Chigurgh vortex.
You just don't see it coming, in a big way
The book describes the death into more detail too. Pretty gruesome
Anton is played with such charm and he’s such an intriguing character but I’ve never heard pseudo intellectual edge lords idolize him the same way I’ve heard people do so with characters like Walter White or The Joker.
Because he’s never portrayed as cool
People sympathize with main characters, usually unable to imagine the story being told from another POV.
Anton is a black void, it is the nothingness that makes him terrifying.
Joker and Walter have character, reason, witz, and purpose. Anton is doesnt seem to have any emotion, just does wjat he has to do regardless of consequences.
I think of the scene where he just stares into the Television, no metaphorical reflection, and empty void of where a soul is supposed to be.

This scene lives rent free in my head since the first time I watched this movie
The thing that's dumb in this scene is that any pro like Carson would know that he'd die in that room, helpless. That his best chance was right there, in that moment on the stairs, and he'd take it. At least I think he would. Better go down fighting than helpless.
Agreed, he didnt even have the gun pointed at him yet, shouldve tackled him down the stairs. He likely thought he could somehow bargain with the money, by the time he learned otherwise it was too late.

I love what that phone call truly represents… death is calling. Times up. This movie is next level.
I'm reading the book and his death is a little different in some notable ways. Anton monologues a bit longer and seems to fuck with Wells to a higher degree, mentally torturing him. The most disturbing part is how his death is specifically written.. The moment he knows it's coming, Wells raises his hand up to "fend off the unfendable", meaning a shotgun slug straight to the face. McCarthy says something along the lines of "all his memories, everything Carson Wells was - his first communion, his mother's face, a child's body by a roadside in a foreign country - was plastered against the wall behind where he sat." Brutal.
Did you notice the single tear that came out of Chigurh’s left eye? This was after he killed Wells. Maybe, for a second, Anton was questioning his sanity. He didn’t get why Carson said “Do you know how crazy you are?”. Keeping Carson alive would have been easier for Chigurh to get to Moss. But since he killed him, he chose to threaten Carla instead. It’s not in this video since it was shortened, but it was during the phone call with Moss.
Another thing was that they are old friends, they fought in Vietnam together
Lacoste...are you SURE about seeing a tear in Anton's eye...? I know you're referring to the scene after this, and I'm sure you have better eyesight than me, but still......?
@@67marlins Yup, 100%.
I think it was because of Javier not blinking thoughout the whole scene.
Carson should have thrown his body backwards on the stairs toward Anton use Anton to cushion fall his only choice
This scene never made sense to me. Wells knows he’s dead if he sees him why go sit down with him. Best chance would be to fight em on the stairwell.
Another thing I noticed is that what Carson said really bothered Anton,
you can see him stare at the phone and back at Carson and if you see his face he looks upset.
when he picks up the phone he actually sheds a tear if you look closely.
0:28 that smile is so creepy & haunting
Because it’s not a normal smile. The smile of death and all a man could do is smile back.
Anybody know why Carson didn't just grab the briefcase when he spotted it on the riverbank?
Probably out of fear of a tracker being in there.
@@jakexdilla I think it was more of the fear of being caught with the briefcase. It was already in a somewhat hidden spot, he could wait for things to cool down and grab it. I suppose he figured he could use knowing where it was as a backup plan to give himself more time, like we saw him do. As to where if he had it, Chigurh probably would've shot him on sight.
Keep in mind that it wasn't just Anton after the briefcase, numerous Mexican gangsters also want to retrieve it, and you can be certain they've been briefed on what it looks like.

Came back to this scene after years of not watching the movie and damn woody harrelson acted one of the best scenes in movie history
One of the best lines ever, "Do you know how crazy you are?"
I'm forever grateful Woody took the role of Carson despite it being a pretty short role. His performance here was incredible. Every single line you can hear the fear in his voice grow, but at the same time you can see he wants to take his death with some dignity and he remains strong. Then, once the phone rings, his true emotions are revealed. He's terrified of Anton, and terrified of what comes next. Brilliant work as usual from one of the best actors in the game.
Crazy people never understand their craziness, thar’s why we need each other to give honest feedback.
I think whats really telling is that when the phone rings Carson reacts like he'd been shot and looks away in fear, then he goes back to staring Anton down who was amused and then annoyed that Carson regained his composure and then only looks back at him after he kills him. It shows a kind of juxtaposition that while Anton is sadistic hes also annoyed that Carson is not fearful of his own death nor of Chigurh its rather more of an unpleasant circumstance he would rather avoid.
