There was a bakery around the corner from me and if you stopped by around 5 am and knocked on the door they would hand you a hot loaf of bread. Everyone looked out for everyone on the block as well. One thing I've noticed is that the majority of apartment buildings in NYC are quite old - decades even. It is a bit odd seeing such old apartments with next to no modern amenities (in unit) retrofitted to them. Things like built-in AC, dishwasher, laundry, elevator, modern heating units, etc. Despite these rent prices. Japan for example, still has many old buildings that have been retrofitted with modern amenities. I'm not sure if its local regulations that keep these apartments virtually unchanged, or the landlords simply don't believe they are worth the expense. If anyone has insight into this, I'd love to hear it! Anyways, I love that loft area. What a view.

    • @CynthiaSusanOrtiz

Nothing is for lower income, they have a specific demographic and socioeconomic group of people in mind when pricing. 45 years of my life in NYC till moving out West. My father is still there and he says the changes are definitely not for certain people, for 5 grand a month our mortgage payment is only $1100.00 a month, I own a car which in NYC was impossible and we are in a quiet area. Many landlords will price knowing there are people who will pay it regardless of amenities. Parking on the street, no parking amenities. Once you leave NYC, you see what you can get for much less and we live in Colorado. When I drive Mountains are breathtaking.

For reasons completely alien to me, it seems that many/most people don't live in apartments. They live in neighborhoods and the apartment is just their way of getting into that neighborhood. So the rent isn't for the apartment itself; it's the price of getting into that particular neighborhood. I find this bizarre in the extreme, but others obviously do not.

4:30 $5,000 a month half off cash deal. Good joke 🤣
Parquet flooring i hope the dont squeak when walking or transfer sound. I remember those from living in Fordham prewar buildings
4:45 That pipe in the ceiling reminds me of when i used to ive in a basement apartment (i dont recommend it). I hung my clothes on it to dry (i dont recommend doing that either)🤣
5:50 Thats normal wear and tear. the constant heating up and cooling cracks the paint. Most of the time when we paint it we use the same exact paint that was used to paint the walls
7:00 This toilet position is a no. But im happy to see the shower head is perpendicular to the tub. Ive had the nightmare of having the shower head horizontal to the tub, with the same shower rod setup. I had to use two shower curtains side by side and water would always get on the floor because of it.
7:40 I wouldn't call that a treasure. The number of times ive gone to an apartment to do repairs in order to be rented out and turn on the AC left behind by the previous renter only to be greeted with the smell of mold/mildew were countless.
7:50 everything is crooked. That bar, the AC in the window, looks like they gave up and just used a tension string for the curtain rod too 🤣
8:10 Im not expert on this but isnt that i fire safety hazard? There is a AC permanently installed in the window and the only way out of the apartment is a door that swings outward, something that can be easily blocked from opening. I was under the impression that doors should always open into the room.

I just don't understand how anyone can afford to live there. Even this "lovely" apartment costs almost as much to rent per year as the median income in NYC ( I think it's around $68,000 per year). Add to that the very high cost of transportation ($2.75 per ride on the subway, or $5.50 per day if you commute) and everything else and I can't see how anyone making less than $150k per year can have even an average standard of living. Yes, it's nice to have the restaurants and such, but doubtful you could afford to eat at them. Most of these places have "kitchens" with no prep space, making it hard to cook if you had to. If things continue to go up in price, no one working a normal job will be able to live there and the cities will rapidly lose their services due to people fleeing in droves. I figured it out, and I would spend 5x as much to live there in similar conditions to what I have now (square footage, food, etc.) in the suburbs. Plus, I would likely spend a LOT more time commuting. Most people don't have jobs that require a commute to the city center, myself included. For those of us in that situation, the suburbs are a much more convenient option with a great work-life balance.

Hi Cash 👋. I like the corner windows for the view, but they are way too low to the floor. A simple slip or a violent fight, and there goes somebody/ bodies plummeting four stories to the ground😱. The "half bedroom" would be better utilized as a walk-in closet and office space. Four stories to climb up to get to the apartment isn't attractive to me. The roof deck is ok, but how often would it be used after summer? The kitchen and bathroom needs modern upgrades. No plans for an elevator installation 😄.
