  • The Grand Final of the Eurovision Song Contest was broadcast live on across Europe and the world on May 11th 2024. Here's a look at how a few stations in Europe handled the networked programme, including host broadcaster SVT.
    The intro features audio from Dutch broadcaster NPO/AvroTros about the disqualfication of their entry. The outro showcases how Swiss channels SRF and RTS handled their post-shows following the Swiss win.

      @RenAigu Před měsícem +9

      That is something the winning broadcaster(s) often get to do. Broadcaster gets the chance for a first reaction. I think it's often the commentators that come downstairs onto the stage. World feed stays open for that a bit. The youtube version of the world feed stopped though, I would not mind seeing it every year, though the issue this year in particular would be that commentators are way more likely to say something spicy on the EBU feed.

    • @MissDatherinePierce
      @MissDatherinePierce Před měsícem +17

      SRF and ARD (German channel) actually aired the same program afterwards. So they didn't just stop but it seems the feed provided just cut off there. However, this year none of the commentators got to interview on stage (I do still remember when poor old Peter Urban had to hurry to Lena in 2010). I wonder why. The joined aftershow only had the German commentator interview Kaleen, Isaak and a representative of Switzerland but not Nemo themselves. I guess he was already getting ready for the press conference.
      Germany, Austria and Switzerland signed a contract last year to produce their pre- and aftershows together. Which technically is a smart way of saving money but got awkward yesterday in my opinion. The aftershow didn't really balance the win well with the other contestants. Since the host was also German, it felt a lot of the focus was on Germany finally getting out of the last places, and not Switzerland winning the competition. I think for the future, the broadcasters should look at their odds and if one of them is likely to win, they should split up for the aftershow. A joined pre-show is still a good idea and saves money for everyone, as is an aftershow if none of the three countries win.

    It's always interesting to me as a brit to see the sponsors because 25+ years of watching Eurovision I've never seen a single one (for those who don't know BBC are public funded so cannot show sponsor logos, advertising, etc of any sorts, I believe it is the same case for Das Erste).

      Yep. "Das Erste" in Germany is the same. Also public funded. Was surprised to see sponsors on all other channels. Also on "ORF1" in Austria for example. I thought it's also public funded but maybe they have different rules towards ads? "Das Erste" also shows ads but I think there are only a couple of very short slots throughout the day. It's highly regulated.

      TVP in Poland is also publicly funded, from two sources actually: from the tv/radio licence, by the government support (because many people refuses to pay the tv licence because it’s quite easy to bypass the fee) and also the ads income. Hence TVP also broadcast ads but they cannot insert adbreaks during the show, so at least we get the Eurovision from the very start to the end.

    Probably most people are curious of how RSI's feed was black, while SRF was ready, but I can see here how each broadcaster has different laws to follow - like BBC and Das Erste, which do not have any ads at the beginning, nor the end. Wondering if that was the case throughout the whole show? Also how the SVT's version does not contain the Bailey's logo at the end (assuming they cannot advertise alcohol there, but why no suppliers between Riedel and KostaBoda is a mystery for me).
    PS: We watched it on CZcams this time, and the end of the stream there contained the SRF's version (of course without the intermediary ads), so seems that they just switched to the same feed as CZcams was on.

      European TV broadcast is actually 50 fps because it is PAL. But unfortunately, CZcams doesn't support 25 and 50 on live streams so instead of it 30 and 60 are used respectfully. This year 30 fps was used because the whole contest was produced in 25 fps, and it is only SVT's decision.

      Teletext is an alternate "channel" on television that shows you written information and other options like the option to activate subtitles (if the program itself doesn't have them by default) and also has some weird stuff like dating chats.
