so it's been a couple of months since i posted this clip, the night of seeing him play. it's gotten some traffic. i guess maybe some people thought the title was clickbait but i truly feel like this solo has so much emotion and power behind it, and looking at the comments a fair number of people agree.
The others who don't like it? sure, that's fine. to each their own. however, among all the naysayers no one ever proposed what they thought their favorite prog solo is. i guess it's a lot easier to just fling mud than have a conversation.

      Hello from u.k.
I’m 66 now one of my first gigs was genesis
Selling england tour early 70s Liverpool
      empire.
Blew me away, also check out Anthony Philips
      You probably have.
Bunch of us talking in work about guitarists, lads
I worked with took music very serious.
All the big names were thrown in the pot, I live
Half hour drive from Liverpool and Manchester.
Over the decades I’ve seen em all when they
      came around.
One of us said, the best guitarist I’ve ever seen
      was Steve Hackett!
He said he saw him do a solo acoustic set, in a
      Small venue on Merseyside.
And was close to him when he played.
My mate said he was staggering, blew him away!
      Skill off the scale!
No one could argue, we all have our faves.
I prefer his acoustic stuff myself, but that’s
      Just my choice.
Take care, our numbers for people
      With taste are shortening!

I know this video isn't about guitars. But for those who may be interested, Steve is playing a Japanese made guitar by Fernandes, a company known for quality and craftsmanship. It's equipped with what is called a Sustainer circuit which enables the guitar to have unending and infinite sustain on any desired note or chord. Steve has mastered it and uses it very tastefully, bringing forth a very soulful and ethereal sound. This is a great example of a master guitarist and technology working together.

Totally agreed. He doesn't play fast but DOES play soulful, evocative, spine tingling solos that move the emotions....(he also intertwines his solos with other instruments e.g. in the middle solo section of Ripples where the keyboards and guitar totally complement each other where each would sound "empty" without the other being present). Hackett CAN play fast but chooses not to as he's more a "feels" man like Gilmour, Beck, to name but two...

I had double-tipped the guy at the door who assigned seating and ordered a $100 bottle of Perrier-Jouët Fleur champagne. That snagged a 4 person table for the two of us, in front on the first level above the main floor and its crowded long, shared tables where you spent the whole show looking sideways. The original album has a bass note during the solo few people ever hear. On the 2nd pass the crescendo has a bass pedal that is so deep no standard speaker can produce it. We used 18" folded horn bass bins. The note is so deep you don't really hear it but it shakes the whole building like an earthquake. We got many noise complaints from neighbors for that. So profound it eclipses the solo in it's majestic reiteration of the theme. Those lacking true audiophile equipment have blown out many speakers attempting to generate that bass note.

@@jasondorsey7110 I believe it is. Michael Rutherford switches to 12 string playing an amazing arpeggio while stomping the bass pedal. It must be fun to create that much noise all at once.

@@MrDogonjon Indeed, I have the Crumar CPB-1 like Yngwie Malmsteen and it's great to drop a synth bass note that makes the room rumble every here and there, has to be used tastefully though, which Mike Rutherford was always a master of

Every single time I´ve heard him play this solo he gives it a slightly different nuance here and there, so that if feels as if it had a life of its own and it was the solo playing Mr Hackett and not the other way around, if that makes any sense at all.

As click bait, the title was more impressive than the actual guitar solo. It’s Steve Hackett so he’s earned his stripes but this solo relies on multiple foot pedals and without them it would be quite ordinary.
