Steve Hackett playing what is quite possibly the best guitar solo in prog rock history.

Steve Hackett playing his masterpiece solo in “Firth of Fifth” in last night’s encore during the Foxtrot at 50 tour. Only Fripp’s “Starless” comes close in my opinion. #genesis #progrock #wilbur #boston #foxtrot #firthoffifth
Calexico - Gilbert (BBC Session)

I have been obsessed with this song since finding it via some Napster-era file share program (maybe Audiogalaxy?) years ago, labeled as "cantremembertitle." The song was officially released on Calexico's collaboration with Amor Belhom Duo as ABBC, and there's another version taken from a Peel Session floating about on CZcams. But, I didn't see this one and figured I would add to the canon of am...

Mike Watt and the Missingmen (Tom Watson and Raul Morales) are joined by Nels Cline for an incendiary version of The Pop Group's "We Are Time" that closed out their set at Solid Sound. (unfortunately the video starts about 5 mins into the song as I hadn't realized I was only in live view and not recording video).

Sorry, But this is not Talent.🥱
If you where Stoned out of your mind it might sound Decent. If you want quality listen to Tony Iommi.
is cool to see that Matt owns a Black shirt aside of a real cool black Lespaul Guitar
only the solo alone makes no sense but it is a fantastic solo
Are they rehearsing in castle greyskull?
matt just looks like someone who has traveled to worlds beyond and back again.
Drooooooop out of life with booooong iiiiinnn haaaaaaand
All those beautiful real tube amps, not seeing modelers 👍🏽👍🏻👍🏿
What a dork.
That backline is awful 😂
Wow! Which BBC session is this from?
no idea! i would love to hear other songs from this one (and to be honest, i am not entirely sure it's from a BBC session... anyone officially know?)
Kinda sucks live
It sounds way different without the piano roll bit but I don't entirely mind it
I've been to alot of concerts, but the Foxtrot at 50 tour is OUT OF THIS WORLD. Top 3 shows ever for me (went 2x and want to go more), with the others being ZPlaysZ and Rush with Primus in the 90's.
Is he using Marshall??
maybe post the entire solo
It's like Meshuggah slowed waaaay down.
I see the Ampeg pf series head.
coming back to this, it feels like they turned the amps down and they are going through it to make sure Jason got the song right, I might be terribly wrong with this doe
Fantastic recording of my absolute favourite song in the world. Thanks so much!
How do they know they’re done?
Firth of fifth was the first guitar solo I learnt !!
The seconds out version is sublime, Phills drumming too
The original recording was better no doubt, IMHO it is a bit slow here, and Phill Collins, Tony Banks, and Mike Rutherford are all missing along with an abysmally poor recording. Other than that.......
i am sorry that the venue couldn't allow for me to bring in pro gear and my iphone efforts tortured you so much you cried out in pain. but thanks for viewing and commenting.
@@narlus I do apologize for my obvious exaggeration. I am impetuous in my writing (frustrated musician/poet syndrome) and should have been more kind. Your post was appreciated on the whole, thx!
Steve Jay Shelley, baterista estadounidense, nacido el 23 de junio de 1963 en Midland, Míchigan. Formó parte de la formación original de la banda de punk: "Crucifucks". 60 AÑOS. (61) 🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁
I did see this one in sweden, fantastic show
One of the great solos of prog, no doubt. A haunting classic Hackett solo. Timeless and wonderful.
I never get tired of this solo and I must have heard a million times. Perfection
Quite possibly? It is THE best guitar solo in prog rock history. Sry I mean in music history! 😎
Thumbs up! :-)
Give me a friggin break.
I saw Genesis just before Steve left, they were never the same again.
I think Gary Moore has a much better feel. Jimmy Pages says Elliott Randall on Reelin' in the Years is best and many guitarists think Larry Carleton on Kid Charlemagne is it. I haven't mentioned any contemporary shredders. This is at best okay.
well, i must admit ignorance of Gary Moore so i will start addressing that. I did add in the "prog rock" adjective and I don't think anyone would put Steely Dan in that bucket. notes per second can be physically impressive but never connects with me.
Best guitar solo ever, never heard of David Gilmore?
You definitely need to get out more broski 😴💤
It’s ok, but I’d rather hear Kid Charlemagne
When it comes to prog rock, I’m a KANSAS man 🤟
Who is this shirted man doing a good job impersonating Matt Pyke?
It’s far more difficult to play slowly in my opinion. Lots of slop and non sense musically speaking, can he hidden in a blizzard of shreddy wankery.
Uninspired and boring
Is that a HAMER?
I like it, Narius, but I'm more affected by Steve's guitar in "Everyday" from *Spectral Mornings.* I'd also suggest Andy Latimer's playing on "Ice" from Camel's *I Can See Your House from Here* or the title track from their *Stationary Traveler* album.
That takes me back almost fifty years to listening in bed late at night via an old fashioned ear plug from a battery powered, pop up cassette player. The sound track to my adolescent dreams of how life would be.
👌
Absolutely chills on the back of the neck, perfection! If there is a soundtrack to my soul ascending to heaven, this is it... all said.
Boring!!!!
so it's been a couple of months since i posted this clip, the night of seeing him play. it's gotten some traffic. i guess maybe some people thought the title was clickbait but i truly feel like this solo has so much emotion and power behind it, and looking at the comments a fair number of people agree. The others who don't like it? sure, that's fine. to each their own. however, among all the naysayers no one ever proposed what they thought their favorite prog solo is. i guess it's a lot easier to just fling mud than have a conversation.
Hello from u.k. I’m 66 now one of my first gigs was genesis Selling england tour early 70s Liverpool empire. Blew me away, also check out Anthony Philips You probably have. Bunch of us talking in work about guitarists, lads I worked with took music very serious. All the big names were thrown in the pot, I live Half hour drive from Liverpool and Manchester. Over the decades I’ve seen em all when they came around. One of us said, the best guitarist I’ve ever seen was Steve Hackett! He said he saw him do a solo acoustic set, in a Small venue on Merseyside. And was close to him when he played. My mate said he was staggering, blew him away! Skill off the scale! No one could argue, we all have our faves. I prefer his acoustic stuff myself, but that’s Just my choice. Take care, our numbers for people With taste are shortening!
It is a nice solo but the title is indeed clickbait in my opinion. I'm a forgive and forget type of guy however so I won't be turning you in to the authorities for this egregious lack of judgement on your part that wasted 1 minute and 40 seconds of my life 😃
@@rszymanskiRSB i would think that on highly subjective topics such as music, when using the term 'best' one would understand that it's 100% opinion. there is no objective way to define what best is. yet the wreckage of twisted panties is vast and wide.
@@rszymanskiRSBI disagree, it's one of the best solos I've ever heard. So he's not the only one who thinks it. Give me this over Eruption by Van Halen any day, self indulgent in my opinion. But each to their own and all that.
I agree with you.. Unbelievable solo and one of my favourite of all time
I didn't realise it was a competition
yes and i am the only judge. good day, sir!
Floyd Rose on a Les Paul is just a magnificently bad idea.
Mick Box deserves a mention - he did something similar a year earlief on The Spell.
Love hackett but; Gilmore has a few that are much more interesting.
Wow he hasnt lost it even a bit, very beautiful playing!
