The City of London's Medieval & Modern Guilds

  • When William the Conqueror faced the merchant and commercial powers and societies of London 1000 years ago, he let them keep their already established rights and laws. The guilds start to get royal charters as early as the 13th century, 110 of them developing all the way up to the present day, and they still hold many of their ancient powers of trade and self-governance.
We'll explore how they became established, how they were and are organised, how they affected society, how you join, some of their ongoing roles and workings, and how they tie in to the running of the City of London as an ancient region in itself right in the heart of Greater London. Fascinating stuff!

I've been doing research on my ancestor Thomas Whitney. I found a comment that he was associated with the merchant Taylor company.2 days ago I had no idea what that meant. Your video was an amazing education for me! I am of the line that came to America in 1630 so don't know all that much about English History and especially English culture. But I know a lot more then I did when I first started! F y i, my line is through John Whitney his son who came to America in 1635.

"...the Queen ceremonially touches the Lord Mayor's sword, without sounding sordid." I did giggle. Love your comprehensive videos.

I'm seventy-three, and you've reminded my that I took my City and Guilds qualifications in various subjects in the mid-sixties. Also as a College Lecturer, I tutored students who took a CGLI (City and Guilds of London Institute) qualification in "Public Services" in order to prepare for careers in the Police Service. Thanks again for a wonderfully prepared entertaining and educational talk!

Mercers are the ones who repair all kinds of clothes, very important back in the day as it is today, for the survival of the fisherman and sea merchants,

Edward commented that the guilds give about £14 million each year. The actual figure is around £75 million! Much goes to education.

Do they have a roofers guild or slater/ tilers guild? I’d join that . Actually I’d join any of them for a laugh if they needed anyone and if I lived in London. I very much doubt that Blackpool has any guilds😅

17:21 is a picture of women spinning wool or possibly linen. Not silk. Silk is 'reeled' not spun from a distaff. There are no silk cocoons that I see. I am a master handspinner with a focus on historical spinning. Could you tell me why you think this is indeed silk spinning? Is there a title that I am missing?

Your videos are well made, but there are regularly mistakes. Small issues, but without being pedantic, I like to point out a few things.
Antwerp was in the Spanish Netherlands, not Holland which was a duchy within the Netherlands. Antwerp was in the duchy of Brabant.
The first 'beurs' (french bourse) was in Bruges, not Antwerp. It's named after a then prominent family Van der Beurze who founded the first exchange which was then named after them.
Caxton moved to and lived in Bruges when he saw a printing press.

The mercers do not come from the french, they come from the catalans, from the mercers and drapers, bastidors, almiralls, mestres d aixa, canoners, trajiners, etc etc

Very fascinating, but everything you said just confirms my opinion that Guild privileges should be firmly abolished. The fact that they can still claim tax exemptions and influence the political environment of the whole country, is pretty appalling really...
