  • I install a ton of garage door opener motors. And there's one motor that from Genie that I feel offers a lot of bang for your buck. That motor is the Genie 3120. In this video we will highlight some of the features of this motor. And of course we will answer the question, who should buy it.

    👑 Great review. Thank you for the great info. I was planing to get a Liftmaster 87504 through my dealer. I got a estimate last month for a new garage door, which is mandatory for me to get a hurricane proof garage door since I live in Florida and. And I needed to to get a opener.
    I put my deposit down today for the items. But was told since the beginning of August they're no longer selling LiftMaster openers, do to the fact the manufacturer not getting the supplies to them in a convenient and early fashion for their customers for it to be installed.
    And this is a 8 to 12 week wait to have my stuff installed. So lift master is taking longer than that to send to there dealers.
    Anyway the dealer told me they are now just selling Genie garage door openers. And they replacing my Liftmaster 87504 with a Genie 3120H-B
    I wasn't really happy about that because I like the LED corner to corner lights. Which is Led plus. And the built in camera. I Love the idea of tech and security the Liftmaster offer. Plus the Liftmaster offer me lifetime warranty on the motor and belt. Vs the Genie only giving 15 years warranty on the motor and belt.
    I know I could go with there retail brand Chamberlain. And get the 4643T model from Home Depot. Nevertheless after listening to your thoughts and opinions on retail brands versus professional brands. It's better to stick with the dealer
    Nevertheless after watching your video I feel more better going with the Genie. And I didn't want to have to go through 2 different dealers for the Liftmaster opener. And the other for the garage door itself. And on top of that I like my original dealer out of all of them I got estimates from.
    So again thank you for this great and informative review.

    • @sosgds
      @sosgds  Před 2 lety +1

      Hello! Now if you're trying to program the homelink feature to your vehicle you will start with the remote transmitter. Typically you want to keep your remote within 6 in from the homelink button. Depending on the car that you have once you program the button, you will then program the homelink to the motor. From there you'll have to get on a ladder to press the program button so that the purple light initiates. Once the purple light is on you can then press the programmed button on homelink and tried a couple times to see if it's synced. Hope that helps!

    here we are 2 years later. Can you recommend an equivalent to the 3120? I really like the idea of the one piece rail but you can't get that benefit from anywhere but a Genie contractor dealer. Maybe the 5 piece rail system has improved over the past year or two? Your thoughts? Really enjoyed your videos and ready to tackle the project. Very informative and well presented video, thank you. I just had a 3120H belt driven professionally installed with 3 years of warranty and was charged $1,000 in the Tampa FL area. Do you consider that price fair?

    • @sosgds
      @sosgds  Před rokem

      Thank you for your positive feedback. The 3120 model is definitely worth a high-end ticketed price. Of course I don't know what other services your dealer installer provided for you upon installation. Thus it's possible what you paid also included a number of other services to maintain your door, to maintain the balance to the garage door, and to make sure that it was going to work at the highest optimal level with your new garage door opener motor. So I would say it's definitely fair if you had all those other value propositions applied upon installation.

    Basically the 8580WLB is the HD chain version of the LiftMaster 8550WLB. If you get a chance can you make us a review on that opener if you ever come across it? I will say i like how LiftMaster/Chamberlain does their battery backup on their openers better because they’re concealed inside.

    • @sosgds
      @sosgds  Před 3 lety

      Sure thing Sam! I will definitely try and get my hands on one. And I also agree with about the battery backup for LiftMaster. It's much more polished. But in California there are so many homes that have a structural beam that runs parallel to the garage that it will not allow a standard LiftMaster to be installed. And if the customer does not want to go with a Jackshaft (and overhead space allows it) the 3120 is perfect for that scenario.

    Great video. Just had a Genie 3120 professionally installed, to replace a Lift-Master 2000SDR installed 21 years ago by the same company. Door would no longer close unless button held down for entire close cycle, and problem turned out to be the photocell control board inside the old opener and not the photocell system itself. So it was time for a new opener. I am in nanny-state California, so the battery backup option is mandatory, required by state code as of 2019. How long can I expect that very pricey custom molded battery pack to last? Expect little use of battery, even with Pacific Gas & Electric Public Safety Power Shutoffs. (Editorial: PG&E also stands for Pacific Greedy & Explosion, and PSPS also stands for Perfectly Stupid Power Shutoffs.)

    • @sosgds
      @sosgds  Před 2 lety

      LOLOLOL! Hello! Pacific Greedy ... that's great. I would have to agree with you about the battery backup. The law stemmed from the Paradise Valley fires. Some died in their homes because they were not able to leave their home thru the garage. I will admit that a battery backup will come in handy in emergencies, but it would be hard to quantify if it can truly save lives.
      So to answer your question, the standard battery will last about 2-3 years. It's a simple battery that can be purchased about $20 bucks off amazon if you didn't want to get the $80 Genie version. Thanks for the great comment!

    • @dane1234abc1
      @dane1234abc1 Před 2 lety

      @@sosgds Thanks for the reply! I don't understand how a conventional, rectangular 24 V battery would fit; would it go inside the molded add-on battery pack? Yes, I was shocked when I saw that a replacement (molded) battery pack would cost $70 and probably only last 2-3 years. However, once my Genie 3120 starts beeping because it thinks the battery is at the end of its life, would not an option be to simply disconnect the battery connector, turning my Genie 3120 into a non-BBU version, with no beeps? I understand that in California dealers must install only the BBU version, but I believe that as a homeowner I have the right to not install a replacement battery. It looks like a generic, rectangular 24 volt battery might fit inside the molded battery case, when the time comes. Can you provide an Amazon link to an appropriately sized battery, that would also be compatible with the charging current that a Genie 3120 provides? Thanks.

    • @sosgds
      @sosgds  Před 2 lety

      The battery attaches to the back of the motor. It has a cover case to protect from exposure to the elements. Potentially the beeping should stop if you disconnect the battery, but if feature is there I would encourage it be used.

  • @garagedoordoctorofhouston6518

    The retail genie rail is a joke if the belt breaks the rail will fall apart. 2. genie 3024 belt or 3120 belt depending if they want wifi .

      Hello Carlos. Yes there is some truth to this. Unfortunately Genie requires that their remotes are programmed and operated from a distance. The reason is because of the algorithm built in their logic boards. It needs distance in order for the RF (radio frequency) signal to be detected. In some cases the motor will receive the signal but the code will misfire and thus not open or even close the door. Based on your comment, it look like you are trying to utilize HomeLink correct?

      Hey Meechie, what I'm hearing you say is "Please work hard to make informative, useful, and free content based on your expertise, but also make it the way I want it so that I don't have to stay on your video very long, even though that's the best way I could help you out in return." Got it! Stay safe out there.
