2:20 . I think it was a lovely, if chilling touch that you showed all of the targeted groups as fundamentally...normal. No identifying marks, no huge caricatured traits, no group symbols, only some community clothing here and there. It shows that when you get right down to it, there were just people. Individual people who had been chosen at random as the enemy of a system too violent, inhuman and heinous for them to stop before it was far too late.
Not completely at random though.
They were intentionally the minorities who didn't have the numbers to fight back, or change public opinion.
A lesson well worth keeping in the backs of our minds today....

I was working as a hostess at a BBQ restaurant last year and I was able to meet a World War II veteran while working. This war is my favorite subject in history and I did ask him some questions he felt comfortable talking about involving the war such as which part of the world did he fight in, what beach he landed on at D-Day, and more. Before he left, he came up to me and told me that it was nice that WW2 was an favorite subject of mine and that he wished he could tell me more at that time (I was still working a shift when he told me this)

Could it have been handled better, sure. However, our American boys were being brutally murdered by the Japanese without mercy. Japanese soldiers pretending to surrender and then blowing up grenades. They killed their POWs, and many other attroicites. The Internment camps here were like a vacation compared to the war in the Pacific.

i really enjoyed this video, however i wish you shed a bit more light on the horrific war crimes committed by the Japanese. The Rape of Nanking was something I did not hear mentioned in the video, which threw me off considering its magnitude. If you mentioned the Japanese Internment camps and the use of nuclear bombs on Japan (2 things I think you brilliantly portrayed to be fair), I feel it absolutely necessary that you also explain the deep, disgusting atrocities of the aggressor as well. Nice video regardless, and very informative!

I also feel the time allocated to certain aspects of the war that were less important completely took away from far more important pieces. why go in depth on the Soviet War w Finland if u aren’t going to mention more important things like the British intelligence campaign that allowed D-Day to happen? Why mention the failures of the West w/o mentioning their utter uselessness in the defense of Poland, which in itself could have an entire video dedicated to it. I feel this video is well done and is definitely informative, but I also feel it is missing many crucial events that should have been mentioned in a video of this length.

The German push through France wasn't helped by some laughably poor defensive tactics deployed by French commanders (Maginot Line). The area in particular, the Ardennes region, was believed to be a natural barrier against the blitzing forces of Nazi Germany, which was quickly turned on its head.
The German plan here was initially not even an attack on the Ardennes; it was to be a total strike against the Benelux region (Schlieffen Plan where German forces pressed through Belgium, i.e. World War I pt 2). They only changed up tactics when a commanding officer with the invasion details died in a plane crash and the British got ahold of the plans and gave it to the French.

Not really a "race", because part of the reason these scientists were in America in the first place was because, well... they were Jewish. The Nazis thought the entire idea of nuclear science was Jewish in nature and never pursued the idea very seriously. I think I remember a quote by a Nazi scientist (maybe Heisenburg) that involved him believing the US used refineries the size of Rhode Island to get the fuel for the nuclear bombs at the end of WWII.

There was an independent Spanish spy, codename "Garbo" (real name "Juan Pujol Garcia") who would go on to give faulty intel on British units and even helped clear the beaches of Normandy beforehand by setting up a possible invasion of Calais.
To this day, he is perhaps the only person in WWII history to have been nominated for the Victoria Cross (Britain's highest military honor) AND the Iron Cross (Germany's highest military honor). Germany, because they thought he provided genuinely useful intel, but was hindered by poor technology the whole time.

Historians are usually calling Germany between 1918 and 1933 this name though.
I suppose it’s a way to discern between the German Empire, Nazi Germany and even the modern German republic.

It's interesting how the Germans were charged with war crimes even though the Allies also committed war crimes like bombing civilians. It's hard to stomach how many modern nations like the the USA are appalled by how Russia is bombing cities in Ukraine even though they literally dropped atomic bombs on two cities and killed thousands of civilians.
It is a serious double standard that no one wants to talk about because it makes the good guys culpable of great evil. The Axis undoubtably should have and were punished for the horrible things they did. But the Allies weren't and that because they were of the victors anon one would hold them accountable.
It's a very serious and sobering thing to think about how the good guys did some seriously evil things to win. But I don't think anyone wants to talk about what their nations did to win. It invokes feeling of guilt and knowing that your nation was not perfectly righteous when fighting evil, that your nation committed some of the evil acts you punished the Axis for.
The mistake you make is looking at history through the lens of good guys and bad guys
@@JohnDRuddyMannyMan I don't know man, a lot or wars have very clear morally good guys and bad guys so it's not always a mistake to use that lens. The Allies did commit some war crimes but it's hard to argue that they were morally equal to the Axis when, you know, the Axis started multiple unprovoked invasions and committed the Holocaust.
And this very video is supporting Ukraine against Russia! You clearly view Ukraine as the good guys and you are right for doing so. There are good guys and bad guys in war, that shouldn't be erased when examining history or modern events that will become history because that's how we we decide who to fight in the present and how we can learn from moral successes and failures of the past.
Winners write history so of course they want to make themselves look good and the loosers look evil, but as we all know, all war is evil no matter what side

@@CrossOfBayonne He talks about the Winter War, which is not nearly as important as the atrocities in China, because those atrocities are why America put an oil embargo on Japan and thus why Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. The Winter War is a very interesting part of the early war, but nowhere near as important to the timeline.

If the A-Bomb wasn’t used on Japan it is quite possible the US would have had to naval invade Japan be it from the Ryukyu island chain or Kyushu. Either way the death toll would have gone higher and higher because the Japanese fight to the death and would make their country like Vietnam for the Allies until at least Tokyo is occupied and the Emperor and Tojo are forced to surrender. This would have prolonged the war likely into 1946 or 47. The A-Bombs while being devastating avoided this and showed the Soviets why they should never be used in war unless someone else uses them on you first.
No, the US didn't need to invade.
They could have just sunk all shipping, and bombed all cities.
But the inevitably resulting mass starvation probably would not have made the military leaders surrender, if the nukes also didn't (it came down to the emperor personally breaking a tied vote, and there was still a coup attempt too - wild stuff).
So, in the end, that would've cost even more civilian lives....
(but it would have saved American lives - although at the cost of many years of blockade, when everybody wanted to go home; so US elections would've become... 'interesting')
Also, it's quite possible that a Soviet occupation would have been the result of an invasion or blockade.
And neither the Japanese nor the Americans wanted communism to rule over parts of Japan.
You have to dig pretty deep in academic and historical sources to pick up on that trail though...
@@MrNicoJac If the war dragged on we could have seen a fully Communist Korea and divided Japan or at least Hokkaido Communist because Stalin wanted a chunk of Japan. Thank God it didn’t come down to that 🙏
