  • What is the Accessory Navicular?
The accessory navicular (os navicularum or os tibiale externum) is an extra bone or piece of cartilage located on the inner side of the foot just above the arch. It is incorporated within the posterior tibial tendon, which attaches in this area.
An accessory navicular is congenital (present at birth). It is not part of normal bone structure and therefore is not present in most people.
    What is Accessory Navicular Syndrome?
People who have an accessory navicular often are unaware of the condition if it causes no problems. However, some people with this extra bone develop a painful condition known as accessory navicular syndrome when the bone and/or posterior tibial tendon are aggravated. This can result from any of the following:
Trauma, as in a foot or ankle sprain
Chronic irritation from shoes or other footwear rubbing against the extra bone
    Excessive activity or overuse
Many people with accessory navicular syndrome also have flat feet (fallen arches). Having a flat foot puts more strain on the posterior tibial tendon, which can produce inflammation or irritation of the accessory navicular.

Hi Lala! I got my 💉 at the Hospital for Special Surgery. The procedure took about 15 minutes (start to finish) it was a bit uncomfortable but not painful.
The injection 💉 did absolutely nothing for me, but it was to be expected🧏‍♀️ The Orthopedic Surgeon did explained to me that in my case surgery was the best alternative, 🤔but he wanted to try the 💉 before moving forward with the surgery.
      I hope this information helps🙂
Be Well❤ Stay Positive❤Stay Safe ❤Blessings to you & yours.

I had a type II accessory navicular on my right foot and i lived with the intense pain after a twisting injury for 10 years. I had an injection and cast immobilization twice and after the last cast, my podiatrist told me i should have the surgery to remove it because it's going to get progressively worse. I got hurt in 2009 and by 2018 the pain was unbearable. Burning, aching--i started to crave the surgery. When i finally had it removed, i had phantom pain in the immediate months that followed and had a hard time adjusting to its removal. To make matters worse, my posterior tibial tendon continued to burn intensely from tendinitis. I continued to wear ankle brace and go to physical therapy. It's an intense surgery and took a year for meaningful recovery, but if I had the choice to do anything differently, i would have had the surgery the moment the chronic pain started.

If it’s accessory navicular syndrome, i 100% recommend doing the surgery. I tried going with the cast first because my aunt had a few foot surgeries that left her worse than before the surgery. Cast-immobilization worked for a short time for me but it was 6 weeks of gambling for a cure while hobbling around. I’m 2 years post-surgical and I had bursitis and tendinitis and the pain from day-to-day was unbearable. Now I don’t hurt anymore-the burning tendinitis is gone too. I had a calcaneal osteotomy to straighten my foot too with a bunch of screws through the heel so when I first started walking again it was a bit uncomfortable. Now it’s like I’m born again. I used to beg my family members to push this extra bone up off my tendon and have big meat pad where my foot was constantly swelling-now I have some scars but I can live my life.
