    With respect to Bob's comment about electricians not wanting small jobs such as this, E.U regulations now mandate such work is carried out by qualified tradesmen. The fact that Glyn wired the extension into the consumer unit also made the job E.U aware.

      Photolsca, Wrong, nowt to do with the EU at all. Part P of the building regs states must be approved by either Building Control or suitable competent person scheme. Legally anyone can wire it still. and "qualifications" are not mentioned in any electrical legislation, just "competent".

    Glad to see you have got the same opinion as me about electrics. I leave them well alone and get an expert to do the task. It may seem expensive at the time but imagine how much it would cost if it caused a fire or worse. I got our barn rewired as we inherited a system where there was one socket in the first room then there was a trailing socket to the next room and so on round the other 6. The electrician said it was a death trap waiting to happen. He even used armoured cable as vermin could nibble the wire with it being an outbuilding. So well done for your sensible approach to what seems a simple task. Guy.

    This is a fantastic idea and I'm sure there will be others out there wanting to do the same thing, may even give it a go as it's quite straight forward. However, would be nice to have some explanation on the earthing arrangement from your electric supply. If you are on TNCS and this has been carried through to the garage, which most newer houses are, this method could be quite dangerous if there was a fault with the neutral on the supply side: the chassis and metal body of your van will rise to 230v relative to the true ground. There's a whole section within the regs dedicated to supplying caravans for this very reason.

    Good install there by Glyn, testing correctly and getting a certificate for your own insurance purposes. Wrong rated fuses or MCB's can either nuisance trip / blow or worst case scenario cause a fire. So Glyn was spot on with the install and observations from start to finish. :-)

    My dad was an electronics engineer(and within that job he had dealings with radiation)and his mantra was "just because you can't see it doesn't mean it won't kill you".In other words be very careful around electrics and radiation!!Something I adhere to this very day.
    Very interesting installation which I'm sure will pay for itself tenfold in time and energy(and no crawling under garage doors).

    Interesting and informative video, thank you. Do you need to keep the electric hook up on all winter if you have a solar panel?

    • @BobEarnshawMoHo
      @BobEarnshawMoHo  Před 3 lety

      The Solar panel won't power our electric heating, which runs on 240v mains and I leave on low throughout the winter. Solar panels are connected to the 12v system for keeping the batteries charged they're not directly producing 240v mains, unless you have an 12v/240v invertor and a large solar panel array. If you don't need heating, then a good size solar panel will keep the batteries topped up. Bear in mind also, how little solar energy we receive this time of year!
