- Could it be possible, I am finally getting to the fun bit!!! The Catamaran Systems are finally starting to be installed. Up till now , it has been all about construction, building and modifying, but now it is time t start the long haul of installation. This week I start on the exhaust system to ready the boat for an engine start up.
Our CZcams build series is all about what it takes to build a Catamaran from Scratch. There is so much detail in a build of this size and so many different techniques involved in bringing her to fruition. I trust you will find something that may help with your current or future project, repair or dream boat build. If you feel there is value, please let us know and comment so we can continue to produce content worth your valuable time.

Every Thursday is ok by me. You are presenting a build series not the news.
Doing a great job mate. Puzzled by the comments re delayed footage, that's the case with pretty much each channel I watch, especially the build/project channels. Takes time to make the videos particularly if they are to be of high quality such as yours. What's the big deal with that anyway? Whingers gonna whinge I guess.
Much appreciated, I find that I cant think straight about the job at hand when I come to edit it unless I leave it for a bit, in fact I can barely remember doing what I have done a few months later which gives me fresh eyes. . Cheers Mate , Rossco
The only issue of delaying videos, is that any suggestions in the comments are too late. You have done OK up till now, so keep plugging away. love the series.
I like the bit at 20:18 where you turn into Janet for a moment...
Ross put a transfer pump in instead of doubling up the fill neck had a hymer motorhome I fitted a second tank for diesel opposite side used transfer pump worked a charm and gave the old girl over 1200 mile range mind you needed a bank loan to fill her up lol 😄😄
With inlets on both sides and a transfer pump you can always get to the correct side (starboard or port doesn’t matter) to the filling station, you can fill both tanks from the same side no matter what side that is.
Love the videos Rossco, the timing is irrelevant it’s the content & the journey…, bugger the naysayers! 👍🫶
Don’t listen to any of those “critics”. It’s the best boat building show ever!
Cheers Geoff
Probably too late now mate but weld a 75mm 90deg elbow on the back of the exhaust outlet. Or 45 deg that way you don’t have the big swoop. Looking great Rossco🤙🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
Thanks Nick, I did thing about a backing tube to reinforce the bend, I reckon with the bulkhead it should be strong enough. Cheers Ross
A short length of stainless and a 45 would have fixed it better
You could source and use some stainless ties if you're still looking for a solution for the muffler mounting.
Love video so impressive the extra bit you do that's what make it interesting
You guys are AWESOME..! Don't let the "haters" upset you. YOU know what you're doing..! Cheers
Well Zak and Ellen will be enjoying 7 degrees here in Tassie at the moment if they came to Hobart to live. Also the cleanest air in the world!
Have no problem with delayed publication of your posts. If no-one mentions a date you are in the now for me. Love your content and not that I have ever done any fibreglass work like you do but I did work for a mate for a couple of years about 25 years ago so I can at least empathise with many of your trials and tribulations.
I genuinely don't understand why you haven't picked up hundreds of thousands of subs. Your channel is entertaining, informative and at times funny. You and your wife and family seem a great group of people.
One little word of advice, please stay healthy as I had a condition that requires treatment every month so I can't really travel and especially go overseas (and I don't mean 'mainland' smarty pants!). It is the most critical asset you can have.
Ross, I reckoned you had enough room in the compartment. My concern is the min/max on the line drawings which in effect creates not having enough room, especially height. Weird.
I think turning the muffler horizontal might work. I am eager to see your solution. Surely you have it worked out very well.
I hurt all over when viewing the sequence with the torture board. The attention to detail is great. See ya next week.
Congrats on starting systems install! It's a monumental achievement😁
Howdy! I realize this video is about 2 months behind reality, and you've probably already solved the issue, but I was thinking, what if you could have a 75mm stainless fitting made that would turn 90 degrees towards the crash bulkhead, then on the other side turn 90 degrees down to your other muffler? That way, you would have relatively straight runs from the muffler in the steering compartment to the fitting, then from the fitting down to the muffler in the engine compartment. Just a thought.
Shows how many individual components you have to consider to create the fine result you are after. Your persistence to doing it right is fantastic.
"Wax on Wax off" made the Karate Kid into a blackbelt imagine what you could do to Bruce Lee using the "epoxy on epoxy off" training technique you have mastered.
Roscoe - you just keep getting it done. Those exhaust hoses are really difficult to fettle into shape in confined spaces.😀👍⛵️
Very nice Ross
Looking forward to the engine start up.
Have a great weekend.
All the best.
Thanks Martin, big things happening this week.Engines are full established, nice clean engine rooms coming up.
@@LifeOnTheHulls awesome 🙂
Love your belt and suspenders approach on the boat systems. Won't be catching you with your pants around your ankles!
One filler hole on each side to go into the tank on that side and a good transfer pump to move fuel back and forth. Might save plumbing and it will allow you to rebalance the load if you ever lose an engine and need to run with only one.
Loving the idea of the separate compartment at the aft of the hulls!!!
Well done , I look forward to Friday's.
regards
Cheers Tezza
Hey Rossco, that looked exhausting ;-)
Looking good it is all coming together
I agree Ross can't believe something as good as that exhaust only comes with cheap cable ties for mounting, that's ridiculous, if you ask me. I'd make some stainless straps as well that will be much more durable and won't look so cheaply installed.
Cheers 👍🍻
Thanks mate
Tight fit
Another great video - thank you so much. The boat looks better and better. Can't wait to see it in the water.
Fiberglassing a pc. of 75mm fiberglas tube through the hull at an angle facing aft would solve much of your problem. Also the stainless outlet fitting going out at 90 degrees to the side of the hull will have a tendency siphon water into the exhaust. A tube fiberglassed through the hull is the standard setup on thousands of production boats, cheaper, easier and no corrosion.
I'm surprised you don't use a straight line pneumatic sander, at least for the 'roughing in' bits. I used one for years while doing auto body repairs and it did an excellent job without wearing out my hands and arms...Not sure if the modern ones are speed controlled, but we used a small, plug-in air flow valve regulator to slow down oscillation when it came to the 320 grit finish work... I remember the fuel delivery guy filling our tank at home, the system had a whistle in the vent that stopped when the fuel level rose up to it, letting him know when to stop filling the tank... If you elongate the hole for the exhaust hose into an ellipse, you can greatly reduce the curve on the hose. It will lay flatter and improve the flow of water and fumes while putting less stress on the hose. High Temperature RTV Silicone Sealant will close up the gaps and prevent abrasion...
Hope you have thought out a back up solution if your Autopilot fails. Believe me. Critical Killer failures are. Freezer/refrigetation, Water Maker, Autopilot and Electricity both 12v DC and 240v AC. Chasing and waiting for Tech Support controls and stresses you out. Doing a great job. Cheers from Smokyjim. Peter A.
Ross, With the dual outlets, couldn't you also add a smaller pair of hoses on each tank to allow air/fumes to vent out of tank thru the alternate inlet ? Or is that what you referred to as a splash stopper ? Excited to see your powerplant fired up for 1st time ! That must have felt good too !
Ross could you not make yourself a hose ID stainless steel bulk head fitting to go through the bulkhead and just connect your hoses to each side. The boat deserves better than just a hose going through with sikaflex trying to seal it . That way the outlet on one side of the bulkhead could be a 90* and your hose could go straight down to your muffler and would keep all the radius tight and clean and not as congested.
Cracking job there Roscoe! Rather than installing the extra filler cap, have you thought of having a two way pump between the tanks like they used to have on the 70s Jag XJ's to transfer fuel between the two?
I know you have already figured out a solution, but I have found that the stainless steel brackets for mounting fire extinguishers works well for mounting pieces like your muffler. Nice bit of cosmetic surgery on your bow. Looking fantastic!
mounting the components with straps and clips instead of a stainless bracket will avoid some vibration noise transferring to the hull, making for a quieter installation, You can also add damping pads between the hull and bracket, etc.
Greetings Rossco. Whatever your reasons for the video delays, they are very interesting and educational. I agree that plastic strapping is no replacement for a metal strapping (with a cushion between it and the muffler (again, vibration)). Have a great week!.. Jim .... by the way, having delays in the videos you get to watch them yourself before airing and saying; // did i actually do that? // How the heck did i fit into that tiny area? // i look a mess! LOL Ttfn
For your tanjs have a pump so you can tranfer fuel from one to the other. It allows you to clean the fuel if one tank gets dirty fuel.
Ross, a silly question for you, why do all the exhaust empty out on the out broad side of the Cats? Why not in inboard side back by where the dingy would go? I have always wonder why but never asked.
Rossoc I know it to late but what would happen if you losing the grey middle plastic clamp? It may be able to turn the top or Bottom. That is why there a Clamp there.
Just rewatched episode 1 and 2.
Shocking eh, yo think how young I was and stupid, haha .Thanks Roger, Rossco
Hi would it not be a better idea to make a stainless steel through bulk head fitting and attach your rubber exaust pipe either side. Vibration is going to wear a hole in the rubber going through the bulk head. Just a thought !! .
Hi Ross, is there a reason for not putting the gooseneck, inlet through the bulkhead directly and then making the sweep to the pot in the engine room?
Then no hose in the watertight area , other than the outlet to hull fitting few inches as a joiner.
After Parley's deck fail on spinnaker is the loss of the flange on your bows going to be weaker now?
With your standards of glassing I guess not ..but.. a thick flange joint seems stronger than a few layers of extra glass to give a smooth side.
I can’t believe they think two tie straps is adequate.
While considering 2 fuel filler inlets on each side, did you rule out a two-way fuel transfer/polishing system instead? Also, wondering why you don't install the entire exhaust system inside the engine compartment and out of the sugar scoop?
I'd be willing to bet the last time you have to sand on this boat is going to be one of the happiest times in your life.
I have a feeling Ross will always be making modifications, so the last day of sanding will probabily be the day he sells the boat.
Hi Roscoe, can’t you put a 90° on the exhaust in stainless steel only a thought, and you probably already done it
I have found that every frickin thing added to a boat ends up being a custom installation with a large amount of compromise no matter how much you plan in advance.
I am in total agreement there Chris, there has not been one standard fit, unlike houses I have built everything was simple.Cheers Ross
4:01 jeez bud, im scratching just looking at ya.
Exactly, what a shocker eh.
If you don't have a name for your boat yet, you could on April 1st of next year announce its name would be a play on your channel's original name: "Moldy". It might take a while for people to notice the date. I remember you changed the channel name because people thought your channel involved mold remediation.
As for as fueling it would be better to have a transfer pump than have a whole extra filler neck.
Thanks Chad , I have now come to that conclusion.I will also instal a reversable polishing station I'm that set up as well..Cheers mate.Rossco
@@LifeOnTheHulls there's actually a way to automate that tank sharing process. Could of float switches a pump and some relays.
When you started your boat why did you spray Gell coat in the mould. You've none of the original Gellcoat left after all the modifications and sanding youve done.😂🎉❤
Does it help if I watch the videos twice?😉
I am not sure, but I appreciate you watching it at all. Thanks Raymond.Rossco
Every now and then I rewatch older videos. But not the lay ups in the mold. I've seen enough of that shit. Been there, done that.
do they not make pre-bent fittings like they use on custom car exhausts?
Do you have to worry about heat from that on the outside of the boat like that - worry about heating gel coat?
Now mounted on the bulkhead wall which will be fine.Rossco
I think the builders of my 1985 boat could have used your advice. The exhaust for the starboard engine runs right across the top of my batteries making it almost impossible to check and top up the original batteries!!
That is a very unusual place for the exhaust to run.I guess they tried to pack everything into a small Space.I am trying to employ foresight into every part of the build, I am seriously paranoid about access and easy maintenance .Rossco
@@LifeOnTheHulls Yes Rossco, I am seriously impressed by your attention to detail and the sheer level of sanding you are prepared to do :)
Good solution but is it too close to the fuel inlet?
No problem there, Fuel Inlet is safe up under coaming and is diesel in any case.
Sure you are already past this stage, but something like a 100mm shaft rotary seal should work in rubber. They’re not expensive $5 or so
tallyho rosco
soo manny pipes that you don't chafe and vibrate and get damaged....... its a real sience 2 get it right... but you will fix it !!!
Why two fuel inlets, u only need one. Fit your one inlet then your fuel catcher thing then have a 2 to 1 or 1 to 2 with a valve to divert flow done.
You asked people not to fast-forward to your videos and even though we all enjoy watching your videos, you sometimes have a tendency to over explain things a couple of times on the same subject and so we get bored we don’t want to hear that we want to see you install it. We want to see how it’s installed so try to explain and simplify it. That way we won’t have to fast-forward through the video.
Ross, don’t patrons get a few days advanced look at the videos? If so they can pony up a few bucks and see it sooner. As to why you ain’t at 1 million subscribers? I have no idea, maybe it’s a translation issue, use Americans have a hard time with people not speaking English.
As to the exhaust tube, I’ve always hated that stuff.
🤔🙋 Not ALL U-TUBERS ARE MONTHS BEHIND. AND YOU KNOW IT. 😡
BTW, maybe you should STOP 😢 crying and get to work❗️
