The history of Ernest Wright reflects everything Sheffield Steel has become famous for. Highly skilled craftsmen making supreme quality products. A lot has changed since the heydays of manufacturing, but we’re proud to be here and able to pass on the heritage of an ancient craft.
Ernest Wright Limited is one of the last remaining hand manufacturer of traditional all-steel scissors in Sheffield, England. The film documents ' Putter ' Cliff Denton, literally a Putter-togetherer of scissors. This film is part of Storying Sheffield, part-funded by the Arts & Humanities Department under Professor Brendan Stone at The University of Sheffield. Music and Sound Design by The Black Dog. Other skilled handiwork provided by Mr Eric Stones.
All copyright (etc) Shaun Bloodworth 2014.
Ernest Wright Ltd would like to thank Shaun Bloodworth and The Black Dog for this truly beautiful biopic of our Cliff's and Eric's amazing skillsets. The scissors are still made by Cliff and Eric and are for sale at www.ernestwright.co.uk

I'll admit, this video about 10 years ago on vimeo made me order a pair.
They're everything the video makes them out to be and more. Absolute heirloom quality kitchen shears. Go buy some. They'll outlive you.

Gunna get two pairs of 6.5" General Purpose scissors here next year. Im stoked, not only for the quality, but for the soul put into each scissor. Didn't know there were shops like this still around. There is no shortcut to quality, craftmanship, and soul. You get what you pay for.

In a world of mass production, it gives me a great sense of nostalgia knowing that there are still companies that make high quality products by hand. It reminds of Nokona Baseball gloves that still does the same in Texas. I’ve ordered two pairs of the Turton scissors and I can’t wait for them to arrive. I encourage everyone to get behind companies like this.

I saw this video on face book at first , which led me here to watch all the other scissors and shears films out there ....
I now own 5 pair of Ernest Wright’s.
Plan to own them all ..They are quite simply a joy to use and own.
One snip and you’ll be bewitched too !

What a wonderful film. Brought a tear to my eye to see the skilled men making these works of art by hand. I was born near to Sheffield and watched as the steel industry slowly eroded over the years until it's almost impossible to see where it all was. Well done for keeping the skills alive and for the publishing of such an excellent short.

i agree. teared up. Seeing such skill, attention to detail is just nothing be complete respect. Ordering a pair right now to support the company and to hold/own something made by such a skillful person will be a joy for me.

This brought tears to my eyes. As a tradesman with decades of experience I take a lot of pride in the tooling I make with my hands and to watch someone work with such skill and precision, where no motion is wasted and every glance, every turn, every tap is with purpose is a joy to behold. I have a keen understanding of how the decades of experience make it look much much simpler than it is and nothing but respect for these people who work to keep alive this noble and honored business. I just ordered my first pair as a wedding gift for my nephew and expect to be ordering a pair for myself soon as well.

i saw the bbc short about how this film saved the factory by bringing in trade from around the world, the bbc one is quite different - a nice man with a beautiful, old-fashioned, not put-on accent, talking and he said it saved them, so i came to see this. Lovely pair

I love how all the work from 3:48 on is kept at real speed to truly demonstrate the skill and experience it takes to be able to make these blades the way he does. Lots of channels and videos try to show you how it's done by slowing it down to "layman's speed" but that just takes away from the whole experience of watching such a skilled Craftsman. I'm hoping to one day be that good at making razors and knives, until then thank you for sharing this amazing video.

@@ErnestWrightScissors That's good to know I would love to see where all this happens, I am hoping to do a bit of touring of the UK this year on my motorbike so I think Ernest Wright's is going to be on my list of destinations :-)
Yes I have a had a pair of your gold Stork scissors but my ex nicked em ! I am going to get another pair soon though.
I also want to get some upholstery shears from you & I do hope to buy a pair of your Kutrite scissors if they do indeed become viable for you to re-manufacture.
I only just learned what happened to Nick Wright so very sorry to hear that. Truly terrible news that bought a tear to my eye.
I sincerely hope that Ernest Wright can go from strength to strength now you have new backers.

    Hello Pam,
I wanted to send some better photos of the issue with the shears. The first four are the bad side, and the fifth is the good side as comparison. It is very easy to see the missing edge of the blade spine. Not only is this an aesthetic defect, it would be a concern for the strength of the blade.
It really is important that you understand this was just one purchase we made for Ernest Wrights Shears, but they were all purchased to be heirlooms. Because of this point, it is truly disappointing that these are not what we expected.
Also, please express these concerns to the people in quality control. It really has affected my earlier impressions of the brand.
    Have a nice weekend,

Tom, the Putter is great...it's always good to see skill demonstrated and attention to quality sometimes seems to be forgotten. Good to know it hasn't disappeared entirely.
That arbor press is the biggest I've ever seen. You should be able to crush some trees with that!
I think the mystery tool is a precision eye poker. The ring is for targeting, and then you squeeze to poke. I think the Three Stooges held the patent on the design.
I hope your next week is smoother. Hang in there.

I’ve just received my second order & love these scissors! Where do the raw scissor halves come from? Who forges them & is that also in Sheffield?

  • @grayalf
    @grayalf Před 8 měsíci

Thank you for your patience while I heard back from Neil and Paul. They have both asked how the scissors cut, as you have not mentioned that at all.
They both understand that on the outside blade there is an inconsistent grinding line, but these ones passed quality control because they do not see that as a defect. It is handmade and each and every pair will have it’s own look and feel. This does not and will not affect the cutting action of the scissor. This pair is unique to you, but as you are not happy with the aesthetics of your scissors, we can offer you a replacement pair, the next batch of which should be ready within the next 2 weeks, or we can offer you a refund.
Please let me know how you would like to proceed, then I will let you know how you can return yours.
Take care and have a good week.
    With kind regards,
    Pam Addy
