Ernest Wright featured in ITV4's "Made in Britain" October 2019
The craft of making scissors and shears by hand was born in this context. By the 19th century there were 60 steel scissor companies in Sheffield. Workshops and outworkers supported each other, with some specialising in different stages of production. Tens of thousands of men worked to craft products that would be shipped throughout the British Empire and beyond. In all corners of the globe, ‘Made in Sheffield’ became synonymous with high-quality, handmade scissors and shears.
However, the rise of cheap, replaceable goods and a shift towards mass production throughout the 1980s, meant that by 1990 there were just a few scissor-making companies left. Today, there’s a renewed interest in handcrafted and supreme-quality steel scissors. Thanks to this interest, Sheffield-made scissors are once again on the rise.
Techniques
There are various techniques used in the production of handmade scissors and shears. All of them require skill, expertise and years of learning.
After scissors have been forged and hardened, the surface of the metal remains rough. To produce extremely smooth handles, scissor blades go through a process called flexible grinding. Different tools and belts and grinders of varying hardness are used to remove burrs and scales from the metal. Flexible grinding was once a common and skilled occupation, but now it is only practised by a few.
The blades of a pair of scissors are curved, so they always make contact regardless of the position they’re in. This way, there’s a consistent amount of pressure to ensure an even and straight cut. It takes skill to marry two blades together because handmade blades are never one hundred per cent the same. This is when master putter-togetherers work their magic. It’s a process of a little nudge here and a tweak there, to turn two blades into a pair of scissors.

What’s the difference between right-handed and left-handed scissors?
zhlédnutí 4,8KPřed 3 lety
Left-handed and right-handed scissors are mechanical mirror images. When a person squeezes a pair of scissors to cut something, they exert force in two directions. The first force that springs to mind is vertical pressure, but we also exert a lateral squeeze, with the thumb pushing slightly away from the palm, which has always defined how scissors are engineered. Scissors are designed to use th...

    Is it ok to oil the joint? Probably not for tailors scissors for obvious reasons, but on general purpose and diy scissors?

    • @ErnestWrightScissors
      @ErnestWrightScissors Před 10 hodinami

      Yes n problem.We recommend Camellia oil or Sewing Machine Oil. Avoid using heavy oils or anything that could attract dirt or gunk up the mechanism. A few drops applied to the joint, followed by opening and closing the scissors a few times to work the oil in, is usually all that's needed. Wipe off any excess oil to keep the scissors clean.

    Buy Locally made poducts where you can. These scissors, work of art and made to last a lifetime!!!. Gonna get me a pair of turtons - jusr one, not a pair :-). Hope the company continues to build- love the Putter video from ages ago. A rant about Uk manufacturing - looking for a DE Razor for ages. Me being in Shefield was looking for a razor after gilette adverts went woke stating men were toxic masculinity or something and wanting to buy something local and a long lasting razor found Edwin Jagger double edge safety razors a Sheffield based company. Originally found and tried an old Gilette razor (US company) an England made Gilette razor made in the 60's the version at twist the bottom to open the top to place the blade. Was my dads old razor with some blades, used them for a couple of years (not the blades rusty), DE blades are no longer made in the UK?? . Long lasting units. Made well. Sheffied made - Ernest Wright - you can't go wrong.

As a tradesman with decades of experience I take a lot of pride in the tooling I make with my hands and to watch someone work with such skill and precision, where no motion is wasted and every glance, every turn, every tap is with purpose is a joy to behold. I have a keen understanding of how the decades of experience make it look much much simpler than it is and nothing but respect for these people who work to keep alive this noble and honored business.
