The latest full-length from singer-songwriter Bill Callahan is a wonderful display of adventurous, tender folk instrumentation and poetic lyricism.
What did you think of this album? Love it? Hate it? Why? What should I review next, eh?

8/10 www.theneedledr...
Y'all know this is just my opinion, right?
Passing on the Willis. Yeah, still haven't really felt passionate about putting up the Sean review. A few weeks later, there's not really much about it that's worth noting to me. What about that album is gonna make it memorable into next year?
What are you talking about? I gave the Flatbush and Callahan multiple listens and waxed poetic on them for over ten minutes! How does that take half the effort of my other reviews???
Smog's rock bottom riser is still one of my all time favorites
its a terrific album thanks anthony
sometimes I wish WE were an eagle. Come on Anthony...
Bill Callahan is a musical genius, absolutely love his work! In my opinion, the majority of his albums are over an 8. Good review, agree with most what you said! Can definitely hear his influences in the music such as Dylan, Young and even artists such as Karen Dalton and Kath Bloom which he done a fantastic cover of her song 'The Breeze / My Baby Cries'.
now that's a good album on the background! (bob dylan - the freewheelin')
This is his most mellow/safest album yet. Not better than "Sometimes I Wish I Were An Eagle".
yes
To anyone reading this in 2019 just a heads up: CZcams now has a Topic: Bill Callahan channel featuring most of his post-Smog discography. His site already has Sides 1-3 that have been rolled out weekly promoting his new _Shepherd In A Sheepskin Vest_ double album. It's amazing so far. Definitely a must buy; but really cool being able to stream all his solo albums here on CZcams. We are lucky.. very fortunate as well that dude is basically giving his music away by allowing streaming.
The freewheelin' on the back is great.
Huerco S. - Colonial Patterns
Forest Swords - Engravings
The Field - Cupid's Head
Oneohtrix Point Never - R Plus Seven
Hey Anthony, Review anything you want, we love you.
it's coming.
Strangely enough, the drummer from Swans is on percussion on this album!
Wait really?
Well, someone has to do it.
Best review you've done in a while, man. Glad to see something other than a 6/10 for once.
OMG Pure Heroine PLEASE I BEG OF YOU PLEASE THE STREAM IS ON THE VH1 WEBSITE
I always thought you were somewhat cold about music but in this review you were really emotional :)
I think that Subsume by Cloudkicker deserves a view. Very underrated progressive rock
You already know what I want you to review.
This is why I love theneedledrop! Just when you think Anthony is focusing heavily on certain genres and neglecting others that are worth a mention, Bam! Good choice, Fantano. This is a great album, and I'm glad to see a review of it.
I loved the album. Next you should review some Australian acts such as Kirin J. Callinan with his album "Embracisim" or King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard with "Float Along Fill Your Lungs"
i was going to ask you to review this one and then well, i found you had!!!!
great album, great review! Smog was a fav of mine for a long time, and still is. when he(bill callahan), started releasing albums under his name, i found it a very smooth transition. all of his work is fantastic!
Was gona request Is Survived By, by Touche Amore. Glad to see I'm not the only one
I love this album. Quite a revelation to me. I had listened to a few Smog albums before, but not much. This record completely bowled me, and then I dug deeper and listened to his last two records too; Apocalypse and I Wish We Were an Eagle, and in some way it feels like these three albums forms some kind of trilogy.
I love how intricate and delightful and playful Dream River is. Most of all it reminded me of Nick Drake's Bryter Layter, and instrumentally it reminded me of Robert Wyatt's Rock Bottom, though not as trippy as that record of course. But you are so correct Anthony; sometimes the best new music is grounded in an old tradition. The lyrics are extrodinary and reminds of Mark Hollis' minimalism at times, I love Callahan's baritone. This could become my personal favorite of the year, though lots of great stuff.
Thats funny, I thought Dream River and Apocalypse formed a double album.
because?
But tbh I do very much trust your opinions, especially after finding I wasn't the only one who didn't like AM by Arctic Monkeys
As a long time Gram Parsons fan, I got a real Gram Parsons vibe from this album. It's about the highest praise I think I could give it. Follows similar themes delivered with the same pacing and subtly transitions from alt-country to psychedelic just like in Gilded Palace of Sins.Absolutely love it. Solid.
Completely agree with what you said at the end, about how isolated this album is from everything going around in music this year. Very refreshing. Also the new Field album!!!
thank you.
To be honest, as much as I respected Bill Callahan's musical talent, this album didn't do all that much for me. Could you review the new naked and famous album? That would be great.
This is the first Bill Callahan album I've listened to and I can't get enough of it, it's beautiful
I should really start listening to Bill Callahan and Smog.
Knock Knock and Woke on a Whaleheart are my favorites of his.
You may have missed Bill's first solo album 2007's 'Woke on a Whaleheart'.
I think I asked my question on the wrong video XD ..sorry they. To jump on topic, I LOVED the instrumentation on this album. Nothing short of showing how music has the power to sway emotion.
Nothing Was The Same! I want to hear what you have to say about it.
I love the fonts and colors you're using for the text on-screen!
Thank you. You just reminded me to get it! I knew there was an album I wanted to get so much, but couldn't remember what it was!
Great review, especially near the end when you talk about the humanity in Callahan's music. Also, would be rad to hear what you think of FKA twigs.
This might be your best review yet Anthony.
Gonna give this album another whirl!
Into It. Over It.
Your lolololololol makes me uneasy.
Thanks for showing me a new artist to look into
Sza new TDE artist review and isiah rashad, possibly mazzy stars new album?
A stream is just a river afraid of where it's going.
Review or give your thoughts on the new Oneohtrix PN video. Creepiest video of the year.
Keep up the good work, Mr. Fantano!
you should!
1:58 you were so satisfied with that description weren't you :))))))
Great review. You really touched on the reasons I think this album is great.
Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, one of my favourite albums in the background. Proper nice job!
Greetings from France, Mr Fantano.
Maybe a reissue review ? Nirvana - In Utero 20th anniversary maybe? No? Yes?
yes please
Anyone else notice the dramatic increase in 8's this year from Anthony??
Yeah, that one hurt. Sometimes I wish we paid more attention to details.
couldn't agree more with your thoughts, especially 9:30 - 9:53
Very good album. I love how low key the whole thing is. It all just seems kind of like a walk through the day to day life of Bill Callahan sort of like Kurt Vile but more folksy wisdom. I could have used just a little more variation instrumentally but he uses what he has pretty well. I also really enjoy the structure of the songs. There aren't too many choruses on this album so it feels like Bill's talking to you. I agree, strong 8/10.
Awon & Phoniks - Return To The Golden Era
The dude likes Smog; this is a great listen for any Smog fan.
I kind of saw it coming.
Are you really not going to review Willis Earl Beal's new album or upload the Big Sean review you said you already did?
Nothing Was the Same!!
Nothing was the same! please Anthony! :)
Yo Fantano, these last few reviews seem to have been half assed. Where's that magic I know and love?!
Omg! I love "Sometimes i wish" especially. "Eid ma clack shaw" and "All Thoughts Are Prey"
Great review; looking forward to giving this one a spin.
Uhhh Freewheelin in the background.. Could be very cool if you reviewed Dylans 60's albums :D
thx, bb.
this album is so good.
Why you gotta hate? Nothing was the same is a good album so show some respect but if you don't agree I respect your opinion
Apocalypse is definitely my favourite of his post-Smog.
Is Survived By - Touché Amoré
I saw you on your comments that you care that drake lied about being number one. So no album review because I'm pretty hype for one
But that album didn't do too much for me. :-P
Because he is into the underground scene because he is cool hip and informed.. duh
Are you still going to upload the reviw of Hall Of Fame? I want to know your thoughts on it and not to forget NWTS :)
Splashh - Comfort
Hey Anthony, really enjoy your album reviews, thank you for making them. I was just wondering, do you like The Joy Formidable? I know it's not related to this review but was just wondering. Thanks! :)
Nothing was the same!!
I know this would be a 'classic' album, but can you please do a review of Diary by Sunny Day Real Estate? Or You'd Prefer An Astronaut by Hum?
Do another classics week! Maybe start off with the In Utero reissue?
have you reviewed the new And So I Watch You From Afar album?
Touche Amore - Is Survived By
What do you think of the new Running Wild and the new Carcass?
New Kings Of Leon album, the 1975's new album, Chvrche's new album and NWTS
Nothing was the same nothing was the same
nice review! very articulate.
Kozelek and Desertshore
In Utero 20th Anniversary please, considering it's a remix as well as a remaster.
Big Sean Hall of Fame.
I've been asking you to review this for about a month, I'm a loyal fan who loves your work. Please review this album. Thank you.
Nothing was the same!!!
Hi Antony, please give a try to Cavalo, the first record of Rodrigo Amarante. I would like to know what you think about it.
great album. great review
The Devil Wears Prada - 8:18
Bravo! I liked this review, and I managed to dig Bill Callahan's career a little better. Ps everytime I hear your voice I think of James Spader. Has anybody already told you that?
Bass, not baritone. He hits low Ds, which are much lower than the baritone range
Anyone know where I can stream this?
Protest the Hero - Clarity track review!!
Bill has been so consistent with his opening tracks.
When will you upload NWTS Anthony? I keep revisiting my youtube homepage waiting for it to pop up :(
