What we call Dance-Punk is experiencing a resurgence in the post-punk scene and beyond. While genres come in and out of season all the time, it seems to be happening exactly every 20 years for Dance-Punk. So why are the punks dancing now? And what makes this time different?
From the ashes of disco, a new sound emerged that shook the foundations of what punk could be. This video traces the explosive trajectory of Dance-Punk, from its roots in the rebellious energy of the late '70s to its resurgence in today's post-punk scene. We spotlight the genre-defining tracks and pivotal artists like LCD Soundsystem and IDLES who have redefined what it means to mix punk with dance.

As a Canadian, I’m surprised you didn’t mention Crack Cloud. They’ve veered off dance-punk of late, but their first, self titled album is a masterclass in it
Love how now days you need to pay for news that isn't skewed
I love this channel man
Ground News is very helpful to bring perspective, and see articles that "our side" didn't report on. I also get their Offbeat newsletter, which is mostly just interesting, weird, and funny stuff. You don't have to pay for the basics, but you can pay for some pretty sweet features too
Post Punk is so versatile atm it's really just 20 different genres in a trench coat.
Something of a trench coat museum?
it really should be broken down into smaller genres but it’s so sicc that it’s not
it's more of a mood, much like black metal
youve said it
Totally agree. Much of the newest post punk is vibe, not specific sounds. I still think production has to do with it a bit, like the type of reverb or sound of the bass
“Everyone just wanted to be one of The Strokes”, followed by a shot of Alex Turner. I love it.
this
Wouldn't Ryan Adams have been an even better pick for that? :p Or maybe Adams was just the Yoko Ono to the Strokes' Beatles
@@HonestObserver Now look at the mess you made me make, hitchhiking with a monogrammed suitcase
And then showing Gorillaz when he says "blurred" lmao
i laughed out loud when i saw that
I really feel like people underestimate how much punk has influenced almost every kind of genre since punk hit the scene
right like i've even seen lofi hiphop artist with punk influence
@@violetraven9440 Your ignorance is excused. Your money is gone. That ship has sailed
@@punter1 boy do I have a bridge to sell you
Although (of course?) I feel punk is not an outlier in this. Like, just as punk had such broad influence, so had hiphop or house/techno.
That and a lot of the music in here owes itself to the Berlin Trilogy, which was a big inspiration on the more experimental and electronic elements of the Punk Scene (Post Punk, Industrial music and the like)
Yo we NEED a playlist of all this

So nice to see The Faint and Controller.Controller here. The Murder Capital - When I Have Fears has gone under the radar for most people but is really worth a listen.
Shoutout to the Viagra Boys! imo they’re leading the current dance punk charge.
Idles are a close second.
For sure!! Viagra Boys are the greatest
Yard act’s latest album is very talking heads with a northern twang, just as important as idles I’d say.
If you're into dance punk you gotta check out Dead Rat Society

*THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR DOING SOMETHING ABOUT POST-PUNK*
Ikr, it's a fantastic genre!!
hope he does more videos where he looks at older history of a genre like he did here
Finally you mention Foals! Give us more!
Seconded! Need a whole video deep-dive into their discography ASAP!
And he didn’t even mention Two steps😭 although Cassius probably makes his point a bit better.

Post-Punk ironically becomes my favorite broad genre & movement

Ironically?
Death From Above 1979 is an ABSOLUTE MUST!
To stay in Canada, Duchess Says would be worth the detour as well. High octane punk energy with an electronic sound.
Scott Pilgrim VS The World, a movie whose soundtrack was done by an American, got me into Canadian punk and a lot of it is super dancey and catchy. Also helped reading the comics and learning about them from the writer's notes. Plumtree is a great pop punk band but overall DFA1979 is my favorite Canadian punk band, they've got everything.
And their leader, Annie-Claude Deschênes, just released an amazing record this month!
O Canada! Hot Hot Heat and Tokyo Police Club albums come to mind as well! Loved this genre, and awaiting it's next wave! Cheers @Middle 8! Marvelous work as always.
@@dopey473 probably my favorite band of the last five years, Cleopatrick, is Canadian and a huge influence for them is Zig Mentality, Canada has been killing it

late of the pier is one of the most underrated bands there are, happy you mentioned them
Here here
Yeah, I was just coming to say this. I randomly found it on a music sharing site and it's one of my favorite dance punk albums, but it seems like a lot of people have never heard of them.
Them and "Dartz!". SO crazy underrated.
They were incredible.
I think Grapetooth is a good derivative of them.
Yes, I listened to their album on repeat when it came, but so sad they ended up so quickly that it obviously interrupted their bigger breakthrough, only Sam continues to play as a LA Priest.
Also, Foals have ALL great albums, not just Andidotes. They're probably my favourite band of all time
hmm nah, there are redeeming qualities to all their later albums but they pale in comparison to Antidotes and the songs of that era.
@@jamesoncroft2980 nuh uhhhhhhhhhh
Foals had one really good song. It was used for the CFBC in 2016.
Going out on a limb here Silent Alarm might be one of the greatest dance punk albums of all time, still sounds light years ahead of its time. Nothing, not even Bloc Party’s own material has come close to magic that album has on display.
Silent Alarm is an incredible masterpiece, but I will argue that every subsequent album Bloc has brought something interesting to the table, whether it is back to that angular post-punk sound, electro vibes, or the lo-fi sadness of "Hymns" - Bloc's discography is ridiculously undervalued!
Agreed
I was going to say the same. It’s a flash in the pan never to be recaptured again. The sense of urgency in the vocals, the absurdly tight rhythms mixed with complex fills, and the trippy guitar FX mixed with angular choppy chords. Just a perfect 10/10 for me.
The two songs that immediately jumped to mind when you described dance punk were Rock the Casbah and Heads Will Roll.
All of the 00's-10's dance punk bands are in my heavy rotation to this day. I miss the old sound of bloc party, chk chk chk, death from above, LCD Soundsystem... this video was a nice surprise.
New Body Rhumba -- the song LCD Soundsystem composed for Noah Baumbach's White Noise -- is one of my favs from recent history. I think it offers thoughtful commentary on the relationship between consumerism and mortality in the grooviest of ways
!!! is so underrated. But their newer stuff is kind of ok
The new Yard Act album is slowly growing on me. And I love Idles!
Its almost anxiety induncing how this video made my taste feel so seen. Post punk is life.
Is it possible to be a casual fan of post-punk? I mean, I guess anything is possible, but it's unlikely 😂
It's freaking me out a bit. I'm used to people not knowing what I'm talking about or viewing it as strange and obscure.
Middle 8 has some of the most consistently high-quality videos on youtube and im all here for it
Seriously, thanks a lot for making this video!
I fell in love with Dance Punk thanks to Franz Ferdinand and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, so I'm glad to hear that the genre is still evolving and moving forward.
PIL, Gang of Four and ESG are the OG dance punks, but I love the 00s bands and the current crop. I’m surprised the sound ever goes out of fashion
It's funny you briefly mentioned techno in some examples cuz during the late 00s and very early 10s dance-punk with techno influences was actually really popular in Australia, one such act (The Presets) even won Album Of The Year at the ARIAs in 2008.
So many good post-punk/dance punk bands in Aus at the moment too. Check out bands like Body Maintenance, Gut Health, It Thing, Blonde Revolver, Cable Ties, Romero, Ausmuteants etc.
THE PRESETS ARE AMAZING
@@dopey473 Apocalypso was the first album I ever bought lol
The Presets were in the top 8 of The Rapture on MySpace (btw Beams is one of my favorite albums)
Honourable mentions:
Klaxons
Tom Vek
The Vines
Hot Chip
Foals
Junior Senior
Futureheads
Late of the pier
Maximo Park
Test Iciles
The Rakes
Crystal Fighters
There was such good music on both sides of the atlantic. A great movement that meant a lot to me a teen/young adult. I cant help but think the world is too fragmented to have a 'movement' of anything fringe, but maybe im an old fart now
Klaxons debut album kicked so much ass... shame the "Nu-Rave" genre died out pretty much instantly.
Late of the pier are the best band to only release one album! Bears are coming and space and the woods are still some of my favs
@@Ennui.I never really clicked with The Klaxons. It felt like their music had been created to sell TopShop clothes and promote the next episode of Skins.
I was a very pretentious teenager and sneered at them at the time, but I find myself loving their music in hindsight.
Oh yeah, late of the pier + klaxons are awesome!
tom vek hell yeah
*CSS* is one of my favorite bands of this genre.
YES!!!!
I saw Viagra Boys live in Denver while opening for QOTSA. They were the only band I've seen live and thought "shit I gotta listen to this band later." Them and Yard Act are definitely some of the most exciting bands today.
Viagra Boys are the best, I saw them last February in Toronto on their headlining tour and it was genuinely one of the wildest and most fun shows I’ve ever been a part of, they’re amazing
I always thought that punk was meant to be a backlash to progressive rock instead of disco. Bands like Yes and Genesis had become so narcissistic, ornate and needlessly complex that bands like the Damned wanted to strip music down to its roots: 3 chords, verse-chorus-verse, and NO SYNTHS.
I’ve heard the same -perhaps it was both?
Yep, completely baseless (and convenient) take - punk was a revolt against the rock excess of the time, nothing to do with disco
@@Rikkrtreat Nah it’s just convenient for this author to say so - punk was a reaction to rock excess and sociopolitical unrest
Part of it was making music that anyone could play. With a cheap guitar and no lessons you could play punk music. Now with a cheap computer and no lessons you can make electronic music. With the genres being so broad and murky, making punk with synthesizers isn't that far a stretch to me.
I would disagree about the 'no synths' part. The Screamers were raw and punk as fuck in 1975, and they use keyboards and no guitar. Look up their song Vertigo.
IDLES MENTIONED RAHHHHHHHH
Love those guys.
Pop Pop Pop!!!
Those guys fucking suck now
They’re only a Grammy nominated, festival headlining band. But sure, “obscure”band IDLES getting mentioned? *shocked pikachu face*
@@no_problem8023 oh let obsessiveoverthinker be happy
I just saw Yard Act live in concert last week, the energy was electric. Dance Punk is such an incredible genre.
You had me at Franz Ferdinand
About Dance Punk in the 90's: Big Beat was its own - albeit sample-based - was a perfect storm of synths, beats, acid house and somehow blues. The chemical brothers, (block rockin beats) prodigy (smack my bitch up) and fatboy slim (push the tempo) all made monumental anthems of dance punk.
Big beats are the best, get high all the time
I'm from England, born in 83. There have always been (I guess you could call them) _"Rock Adjacent"_ crossover acts in other genres. Prodigy, over here, got tons of young people from the dancey-ravey-techno-ey kinda scenes at the time into the rock and metal scenes, and vice-versa. Prodigy themselves having a live guitarist who was in an industrial-esque metal band I was into at the time called Pitchshifter.
All those groups mentioned would be something both genres could shake hands on and meet in the middle. Great shouts.
100% The proigy was more punk than anything else.
This all was pure garbage imho. No songwriting, poor production from second zone musicians trying to join the techno/house bandwagon in the most pathetical way...
@@Norsilca I see you've read the manifesto :)
NEW MIDDLE 8 STAY WINNING
Late Of The Pier are a gem, shame they only made one album due to the tragic lose of their drummer
I was just going to comment about LOTP , that album was insane!!
Punk was never a reaction against disco, punk started right alongside disco.
Thank you!! Such a bullshit claim jeez, im tired of youtubers and their pseudo knowledge of a subject they are just talking about to make views and money anyway
There where so many queer and black people in the disco scene so yeah punks where alongside this person doesn't know what they're talking about it racist that where against disco not punks .
@@MistyMaize exactly, the whole take "disco was repetitive garbage" was clearly something from the racist right wing, which punk always has been strictly against.
Of course "commercial" disco was garbage, but this poor form of disco was mostly made or produced by white people who didnt care about the richness of the real Disco music scene.
@@MistyMaize exactly, the whole narrative "Disco is repetitive garbage" comes from the racist right wing of that era, which punk always has been against its ideology. Sure there was commercial disco that was trash, but it was made by people who wanted to make money, completely ignoring what the real Disco and its richness was about. You can qualify this commercial bullshit as if it was representative of the Disco.
The anti-disco backlash was very much a response from mainstream rock radio (and general racism/homophobia), not the punks. The infamous "Disco Sucks" rally(/riot) was organized by a rock station DJ who was pissed that his station had changed format to disco/soul, IIRC. Friggin' Blondie put out a straight-up disco *banger* for crying out loud.
wild number of band names i l-l-l-love mentioned and then some more to discover!
So glad to see you cover foals. i used to listen to cassius all the time in my later teens
Since I consider Foals' Antidotes to be the best album ever made I immediately clicked on this video.
Very insightful even though I never even heard of half of the acts you mentioned. I just wish there was a Spotify playlist with all featured songs.
It is. I think if you look up one of the first comments, Middle8 shared a spotify link to a playlist.

Late Of The Pier mentioned! Sad they never made a follow up album, they were always my fave of that era alongside DFA1979
Late of the Pier are so underrated
Some good stuff here. Starting to look as if bands like Rabbit Junk, Dystopiarch, Youth Code, etc, are the voice of contemporary electronic post-punk. Cutting edge shiz with socio-political messages.
Definitely. I'd add Hide to that list as well. Great band.
Agreed. love rabbit junk, and dystopiarch donate all of their record sales to civilian victims of the middle east war. this is the future.
I will always say silent alarm is the best album of this subgenre. It just has so much energy, incredible riffs, song structures interesting lyricism with quirky cattchy vocals and the best drumming ive ever heard on an indie record. Its like they took everything from gang of four and did it even better with a modern coat of paint
Their first 2 albums are excellent to none, but goddamm did it hurt them losing Matt Tong on the drums.
Till this day, I cant get into their newer stuff.

You and Trash Theory are making amazing content 👌
Great video! I used to host a radio show featuring these bands and even managed/directed vids for a few dance punk bands so this was a great trip down memory lane. Curious about The Killers omission, tho. Hot Fuss is unquestionably a dancepunk album, and in my opinion is the beginning of the end (despite it being my fave album of 2004 lol)

At the time it wasn't post punk, like the Ruts etc, they were just bands with their own sound.. Killing Joke too!👍🏼
If you like dance punk, check out Kid Kapichi! British, post-brexit, lefty punk rock. Saw them live twice now, they're good!
So so Happy they're gaining some recognition. They are my favourite band since I saw them open for Nothing But Thieves. Sadly I still didn't manage to see them on their own

I just love the snippets of music. Wonderful you get to use clips without copyright. I've tried to upload videos with snippets and they always flag mine.
In my opinion, Foals's best album is a tie between "Holy Fire" & "What Went Down." Awesome font and editing style with Adobe as well! Keep up the amazing work 💯😊
The thing is there were always a lot of cross-pollination since punk came out with disco, hip-hop and early electronic music. Proto house and techno DJs in New York, Chicago and Detroit played postpunk tracks but as soon as the scenes got any traction outside of their original spaces, the new fans wanted to focus on the core of their favored genres, but plenty of people involved still kept open ears and being influenced by genres, even if many fans were unaware
Anybody have a great playlist of Dance Punk to share? I used to be in a dance punk band 15 years ago but called it electro-rock back then. Can I post a link? 🙂
Can we get an a-z of listed artists and where they fall in to the overall picture on these kind of videos? Not everyone uses Spotify so the playlist, while really kind, isn’t always of use!
Love the vid as always
Thanks for alerting me to this sound coming back I loved this style in the 00s
Honestly the indietronic and 2000s dance punk phases are so great, that I see them in other current projects resurging - Porter Robinsons new project direction and this new act that popped up end of last year called "Master Peace" that's channeling a lot of Franz Ferdinand and bloc party energy. Also how come this didn't even include the terms "electroclash", "sleaze" or "blog house"
"Up here in Canada..." So, that is two beloved music essayists comong from up north, huh?
nice to see you back!
This video is so good, thank you for this!
Yard Act are the best! Especially their guitarist, he's one of the best guitarists of the last decade. Not to mention James' lyrics
