- In this video we take a look at the GEEKOM A8 mini PC featuring AMD's Ryzen 8945HS CPU in a small metal case. This one focuses on AI and there's been slight improvement in CPU performance over the 7000 series.

Another great one. Appreciate the little humor injected but not overly done or in every video.
You beat me to it with this review Rob. I was expecting my A8 to arrive today from Amazon to replace my A7 that you may remember from one of my previous comments in your A7 review. The A8 AI improvement is my main interest at this point and I concur with you that the A8 is just an A7 with slightly better AI. I've got some ideas being built into prototype that we should discuss in a private channel. Expect me to get in touch. Cheers!
Great review
I like the improved SSD write speeds (6000+). For those into programming or video uploading, that is huge.
Still disappointed with the fan/cooling on RAM. A person can only game for an hour before heat and bottlenecking effects performance.
If you have time for a filler episode, can you investigate disks in these mini pc-s? What controllers, memory chips and ssd cache? I have seen Aliexpress SSD investigations with really old leftover controllers, memory chips, that don't pass memory test and missing or really small cache. CrystalDisk is more like smoke and mirrors.
8:36 -- 49 dBA under load is somewhat past hushed.
Lovely jubbly video 👍
WHAT?! I CAN'T HEAR U!!
We'll be having an anniversary celebration livestream next month, remenber to join us for some fun!🥳
Great review as always. Just one correction, when doing the windows account workaround, it's a backslash, not a forward slash. Also seems to me that the 8000 series are really just rebranded 7000 series performance wise. Still they perform well.
Thanks. Not the first time I've gotten the slash wrong 😅
I'm really curious to see how the AMD Ryzen Strix Halo will fare and in any case we'll find out soon, since Lisa Su will present it in a few days
Never thought RAM temperature would have that much impact ... have to keep that in mind for future minipcs ...
Having only one m.2 nvme slot is a downside but otherwise a very powerful mini pc option.
beelink ser8 with extra ssd slot and a dust filter looks better than geekom.
Lovely unit, and I'm glad that the heat-sink cooling for the nvme drive works. But these days, seeing new units come out without the 2nd fan for the RAM/SSD seems strange. A second nvme drive would have been nice too.
Thank you for the review! It seems that Reatan Alloy 9 remains the best performant Mini PC and, it's even cheaper than Geekom A8!
Minis pc are great when using at 35w or lower... Even at 45w it makes no real difference against 35w. Mini pcs manufacturer should setup their models at that TDP. Great review as usual!!
Dude literally had a siezure at 0:15 🤣
Quite the feat for AMD. Beating Intel at both software and hardware encode on AV1. Solid dominant win, too bad about the price, but that is sure to come down to my range eventually.
Can you advise how to get this little machine a power backup. I dont want to get my large UPS as it defeats the purpose. A small mini UPS would be ideal that would provide surge protection and backup for around 30-60 mins
If I plan to use this for Linux only. Do you see any issue with installing Linux from the get go without first going through the windows 11 process?
Have you done a test of the Minisforum UM790 Pro?
No
I look at the 8845 HS and the only real advance is The NPU. I could do just as well getting an SER7 with a 7840 HS.
I wish they'd just give a couple of antenna ports on the case to screw in some ears for it. I'd rather have functional wifi and a slightly-less-clean case than a perfect shiny cuboid and shit wifi
Hi dear, Can we render the 4K 60fps file on this mini PC?
You mean like encoding or exporting video from editing software? Or do you mean 4K60fps video playback?
Will this PC work with freesync, freesync premium, freesync premium pro? I have a freesync premium pro monitor but I have never used an AMD cpu or gpu. I am not concerned if it is powerful enough, just if these features are something build into the integrated graphics. sanku.
Supports Freesync, but I'm not sure which one.
@@Robtech thanks for the reply. This is very interesting topic to me and not a lot of information out there. With the SER8 coming out it is a game changer. VRR with the hdmi 2.1, and freesync with the display port. Until now i believe full graphics cards were needed for this. No more need for gsync. My primary use case is for emulation, not new games. I want low input lag and no screen tearing.
Wow. DDR5 overheating... 🤔
If you can, can you include some Blizzard games? OW, WoW, D4, etc...
What version of Ubuntu are you using?
24.04
How about vs minisforum rx6650m
RX 6650M is a dedicated graphics card and is far ahead of any integrated graphics.
GMK Tec M6(Ryzen 6600H for $250) was insane please check it out
It's in my review pile
@@Robtech thank you 🤍 Im planning to upgrade to that GMKtec M6 coming from Chuwi Intel N100
If vesa mounts make your list of pros then there must be very few differences between the minis of today
Sorry but I'm just going to hold out all purchases until they put LPCAMM2 memory into these things next year.
And that how you won't buy Keekom a8. Too hot and it would kill the ddr5 fast.
No real difference from the previous piece of junk. You'd think Geecom could have learned something. Great video though
Junk? Bit strong no?
The A8 is definitely not junk but it is arguably the worst value 8845HS mini PC. It has DDR5 thermal throttling, USB C PD input does not work as advertised, the single USB4 slot is limited to 8k 30hz instead of 8k 60hz, wifi/bluetooth range are short, etc.
The A8 is a form over function design.
@Bajicoy What are the top 3 you'd recommend. You seem to know your stuff as I've read those pain points online too.
Hardware encoding is shit. Dont know why one compares, AMD's version, Quicksync and NVideas version all three give annoying compression artifacts. Maybe its livable in 1080p, but in 1440p and 4k, for me it wrecks the video.
Even AV1 hardware encode? To my eyes the result at preset 4 or lower is identical to source
@@cirozorro i havent tried that on nvidea as I only have a 2060. But yeah quicksync sucks compared to software encoding, even on AV1. there is compression artifacts and I hate that. Particularly when I compress gameplay files, in games with a lot of high detail textures.
