  • This was SCARY! A spectacular aerial battle with a big tarpon ended in violence near my kayak while fishing in only 5 feet of water. I'll remember this every time I reach in to land a fish, especially in the kayak.

Wow! Be vigilant out there John... that was a ferocious attack and terrifying to imagine that you were in your kayak wearing flip flops... Not exactly a knucklehead bluefish biting an eel in half in the surf along the north point at Montauk was it? You sure do have some spectacular videos... this footage is tremendous! you're getting pretty good at this! Please be safe

Actually it’s amazing when it happens. Essentially a Tarpon is just a massive plichard. I mean the Montauk guys swim out to rocks on a high tide and I’ll bet you there have been a few juvenile great whites splashing around and the don’t even know it. Same with the guys at Race Point in Cape Cod. Big 15 footer cruising by 20 yards off the beach and they have no clue.

Ps quick note: I know sometimes there's might be a notion of a video being not action enough, but I personally like to see what's in between the most action.
Especially when you go into such detail on technique, bait, tackle, working an area etc.

Big ole Bull... They're absolutely brutal, I've had a few snook, jack, tarpon, weakfish become easy offerings for big bullies on the flats and in the back bays and canals. Water depth means nothing to them. They're ruthless hunters. He was probably tailing him the whole fight waiting for him to tire out so he could capitalize on your catch. AWESOME video John.

It is fun to fight them on the light gear, but this is why I use a bit beefier tackle like an 8ft rod rate for at least 30lb so you can bring them in a little quicker. Not only because of sharks, but also as not to tire them out too much. Great video!

Almost certainly a bull shark. Very common in the water depth you were fishing. Among the most aggressive sharks. I have witnessed several attacks on tarpon, mostly tired on the line but one was swimming free. Enormous explosion when the shark took half the tarpon. It came back a couple of minutes later and took the other half with another explosive hit. I wouldn't have the nerve to fish out there in a kayak!

The hammerhead was named Old Hitler and was something like 15-18 foot He would eat all but the head of a tarpon. I saw his shadow once pass under us & form like 300 yards saw him breach as he took a mans tarpon. . . . .

Florida native here, sharks are in all depths of water: hammer, tiger, bull, reef sharks. Hard to tell from the video. I can say I wasn’t surprised and expected it, shallow water with thrashing, sharks come on quick.

Ever thought about adding an underwater camera? it could go on a flexible mount with a go pro mounted underwater on your left side.

Massive bull. That’s why I don’t swim anywhere near that area or wade fish. Wow! Great video!

Thanks for the ID. I never wade deep because I'd be spooking the fish I'm trying to catch. I've seen people do it but I see so many stingrays I never go past my knees.
