    Thanks for the detailed review! Would you recommend the gravel rims for a road bike running 30-32c tyres then, as those rims have an outer width of 31mm? The 24mm internal may balloon the tyre slightly wider I suppose.

    • @stevenleffanue
      @stevenleffanue  Před 2 měsíci +1

    I've got my eyes on the Elite Drive 50D but am wondering how they (carbon spokes/ceramic bearings and all) would hold up to such abuse versus, say, typcial steel spoked/bearings wheels?
    Thanks for insights.

    • @stevenleffanue

      They should be fine. If you have any problems there's the three year warranty. If something doesn't go wrong within the 3 years that's good going. I have a set of their gravel wheels and they are tough as nails on rough, rocky sections.

    • @erikarnstrom897
      @erikarnstrom897 Před 5 měsíci

      Yes, the goal is hookless and that’s why mtb rims are needed. There is a relation between hight and width, slimness which is key to reduce turbulent flow. The aero advantages are less when increasing the width of the rim and tires.

    Great video - A question re aerodynamics. If you have 28mm external rim width wouldn't you match it with a 26mm tyre rather than a 28mm? I've found that most tyres are wider than the listed measurements when pumped up. The 26mm becomes closer to a 28mm in a Pirelli. Whereas a 28mm would become a 30mm creating the tyre bulge over the rim that you illustrate in your video?

      Train on cheap Chinese rubber, 35s. Race on 25/28s. Been doing it for years, few/no flats, less wear on race wheels, added work/strength from riding heavier wheels. And gives you some use for the wheels that came with bike, most of the time.

    • @HolmsOnBikes

      Wider is faster because of many factors. Road vibration, contact patch, tire/rim interface....it's been proven time and time again that modern tires are MUCH faster than the old 19-23mm tires. Harder tires feel harsh which our minds equate to faster.

    28mm outer width is too narrow by today's standards. Probably perfect if you ride competitevely professionally, but if you are just an amature I think 28c tyre is a bit too harsh. As long as you start riding anywhere away from a perfectly smooth tarmac it is probably not better than 30-32c even for professional athletes. Also, for the price you could probably get DT Swiss 350 or even 240 from the biggest players, not noname hubs.

    He has missed out the theory behind it:
    105 silca rule of aerodynamics, is in a blog. Just google it.
    You look at the internal width which spreads the width of the tire. Thé élite are mostly 28mm external & often 21mm internal. They are amongst the best. The patent is gone for the DT Swiss hub 240s. So they now have this technology built in. The end caps slip off easily but can be replaced with tighter tolerances of real DT Swiss hub end caps sold all over.
    I own 3 sets. Elite were so helpful and allowed me to buy some 50 rear & 40 front as I do mixed uk terrain. My 4th set is just in & is 45mm for all terrain again: 1320g!
