  • Cuban bread....lard, yeast, flour salt and water, 5 ingredients that could change your view on bread forever. We are on the hunt for the best Cuban bakers in the world, starting with the City of Hialeah, where the highest concentration of Cubans living in the US still reside (I know, you thought it was Little Havana, but that's tourist propaganda).
Some folks (ehm, Google) claim that this "bread of all breads" (in our opinion) was first invented in the United States. Truth is there is little information about the history of Cuban people (the majority of our history and culture erased) and our food. We hope to be a part of the preservation of some of our culinary traditions and keep the stories alive.
Crazy fact: Cuban bread is not accessible to Cubans still living in Cuba. The shortage of supplies and resources means the government only serves this staple carb in tourist restaurants. When we visited Cuba some years ago, we treated our relatives to the treat by packing 10 loaves in our carry-on to the confusion of our fellow US passengers in route to the Pearl of the Antilles on vacation. Crazy, huh.
In this episode, we (Gina & Ernie) spend the day trekking our old hometown, Hialeah (agua, pan y factoria), in search of the best Cuban Bread in the city famous for it's endless selection of authentic Cuban fare.
We visited 6 iconic bread makers in the area, which we both know and love:
Sedanos Supermarket on West 68th street (close to Hialeah Gardens)
Vicky Bakery 49th street and East 4th Ave location
The National #2 Supermarket on Palm Ave and 60th Street
El Indio Bakery East 4th Ave and 41st Street
Casa Potin 39th Street and Palm Ave (next to La Tijera)
Tropical Wholesale Bakery on 25th Street & West 1st Ave
We took all the goods home and gave them a review, taste test and score, along with some suggestions on how to make the most of each style of bread to make sure your precious Pan Cubano never goes to waste.
See, some breads are made for snacking, some are perfect with some guava and cream cheese, while others are best suited for tostadas or Cubanos or better yet, torrejas (Cuban version of French Toast)!
If you couldn't tell by this video, we take our bread quite seriously (let me know if you a bread specialized host for your podcast...I half kid. I could talk about bread for hours (this was an editing nightmare, I just went on and on and on about it....poor Ernie. But anyhow, wanna talk more about bread, reach out and let us know, I have a solid two hours of info (maybe I should turn it into a webinar LOL).
Let us know if we missed your favorite baker and we will be sure to check it out.

Hahaha love the video... The one thing I miss about living in South FL is the food... And certainly the bread... This video takes me back to when I used to walk down to the store in opa locka with my cousin, grab some milk and some bread because my aunt sent us to get it, and we'd eat at least one loaf and drink half the milk before getting back to the house 😅... Then she'd send us again to get more 😂...

Hello from Battle Creek, Michigan. I am a cuban american who has been living in Battle Creek, Michigan for the past four years. The only thing I miss is Cuban Bread and Pastelitos. Cuban Bread doesn't exist here. You guys are so cute! I enjoyed watching you. However, you didn't get the famous La Segunda Central Bakery in Tampa. They are the original Cuban Bread Makers in Florida. If you do get it, please let me know.

I grew up in Miami, and the bread my family would buy, was soft in the middle, but had an almost cracker like crust. Now I'm stuck in the middle of indiana, and I've had to learn how to make it myself. The bread turns out really well, but I can't seem to get that cracker type of crust. Any ideas you could give to help me with this dilemma?

Two things, spray the dough with water and have a sheet pan of water in the oven while baking to create a high humidity environment. Adding sugar to your recipe also helps.
