Zaheer is the leader of the Red Lotus, a martial arts expert, and an anarchist, who strongly believes in the foundation of a new world without the Order of the White Lotus, the four nations, or the Avatar. After the Harmonic Convergence of 171 AG, he also became an airbender and, after having let go of his final earthly tether, he unlocked the ability of flight, becoming the second person ever to have done so. While in pursuit of his goals, Zaheer and three of his comrades were captured and imprisoned in separate, high-security prisons. Upon becoming an airbender thirteen years later, he escaped the custody of the Order of the White Lotus and subsequently freed his allies from prison, including his girlfriend P'Li. He threw the Earth Kingdom into chaos by killing the Earth Queen and attempted to end the Avatar Cycle by killing Avatar Korra while she was in the Avatar State. This attempt failed and Zaheer's comrades were killed, leaving him as the only survivor of their group of four. Following his defeat, Zaheer was once again imprisoned, this time in a new facility near Republic City. To his disappointment, he heard of Kuvira placing the people of the Earth Kingdom under her military dictatorship, thus rendering his attempt to free them from oppression futile. Hoping Korra could stop her, Zaheer helped Korra in 174 AG to meditate into the Spirit World and let go of her fear of him and of "what might have been".

Man, he deserves more detailed backstory, although we know his story as a teenager, we didn't know what his origins and what nation he was born, that will remain as a mystery

I love him as a character. Up until he tired to end the cycle, I though he was actually a good guy who was misunderstood.
He's a good example of a person with good intentions blinded by ideology.
I don't think destroying the cycle makes him a mad person. It's the means that couldn't be justified to get to that end.

I don't think Zaheer is a bad guy, he is more of an anti hero with a disturbing cult like world view. He does seem to care for people but he has an extreme way of helping them.

He wants freedom which is good, but his version or ideal of freedom is a dangerously skewed misconception that will only bring about chaos and suffering. I.e. Anarchism. Which is objectively bad. It doesn’t help he also goes ahout this objectively ‘bad’ goal in a ‘bad’ way by targeting world leaders. Granted killing the earth queen is arguably a ‘good’ thing comsidering how corrupt she is, or was at least. But he planned to do the same to everyone else with a position of authority including korra. On top of that killing her also lead to a muchhhh worse individual taking power through force. Sooo yeah objectively speaking he’s a bad guy. But depening on your own moral views I can see why people would make a case for him as a anti hero. Although I think that classification isn’t exactly apt either

I think you’re right, eastern beliefs about martial arts and chi is central to the avatar universe. We have to infer what we learn from Iroh about what bending is. Bending is the command of chi through your body and then extending that chi outside your body to command an element and every nation commands their chi with a unique martial arts fighting style. Then guru patik shows Aang that you have more chi flow when you are not blocking your chakras with various illusions that inhibit each chakra in a different way. Zaheer was the most dangerous criminal in the world before he was granted air bending for a reason, it was his skills and knowledge. Zaheer was obsessed with air nomad culture and philosophy, I’m certain he mastered their fighting style and aligned his chi with that of an air bender long before the spirit world granted him the ability.

@@marafrederick8331 Certainly my favorite even back when it first came out, Amon a close second, though the reveal and rushed conclusion kind of ruined the overall situation. If only Nickelodeon had guaranteed them more instead of pulling it on them later that, "Yep, you got more funding!"
I agree he must have already had some idea of the concepts of air bending but he blended them with his already mastered martial arts allowing him to learn it quickly but with no master he could never master it properly like Tenzin
At the fight with Korra having been forced into the Avatar state, Korra's technique of flying with her feet by fireblasts, reminds me of Ozai during Sozin's comet

And she was fighting an air bender who spent the entire time fleeing her attacks, they even flew through very similar stone pillars. I think it was a purposeful inversion of the two season three finales.

I’d like to see how he interacts with civilians. Maybe like a 60 40 like aang and zuko. Atla story is just almost a story about zuko too. It would also create true balance. Not one avatar can control everything. Also just think about the character arc the avatars could go through

Zaheer is basicly Korra's main villain. After all he was hinted in the first two seasons, through being the reason why Korra was sheltered and having history with Unaloq.
She even needed to go back to him for exposure therapy in order to regain her strength. Korra could never escape Zaheer.

That fascinating about zaheer he reminds of a evil aang and how he gathers his anti avatar group especially reminds me of them and why book 3 was one of best seasons in my opinion cuz it takes us back to earth kingdom and ba sing se as well as other regions (misty palms) that was last seen in OG series
One of my favorite theories about Zaheer is that he was one of Aang’s son, but he got his bending taken away and that’s why he knows so much about Air Nomad culture and why he wants to kill the avatar
Zaheer was a martial artist that's why he knew how to use is airbending when he got it he also studied air Nomad culture cuz he was interested in it so when are bending he was able to use it to its full advantage in just a short amount of time he is not related to Aang in fact the here might be just a teeny bit older than Aang

I don’t know if this is a known theory but I like to think him as ty Lee’ son. For this theory to work though you have to involve another theory which is that ty lee is an air bender. These theories answer questions like how Zaheer could fight so well and how he knew so much about the air nomad culture.

If we look at the story of avatar wan, we realize that the air nomads of that era were able to fly too. This is shown when they take food from the trees and fly back to the lion turtles

Red Lotus is the strongest team of all time that's beyond controversy.Zaheer can fly and he is full of tact .Ming Hua's attack is very aggressive and her mobility is matchless.P'Li is second in command in Red Lotus and the combustion she makes with her third eye is powerful.Ghazan uses his lava bending can annihilate the whole air temple and the wall of earth kingdom.

I have a theory, What if Unalaq betrayed the red lotus not just because of the desire to merge with Vaatu and and reinfornce his spiritual theocracy, but he also found out that since the Avatar was his own niece, she'd be more inclined to trust him? Zaheer was an air bending master in theory and philosophy. That's why he was so much more knowledgeable on air nomad culture compared to bumi and kaya comnined. His plan was to train Korra, and they had masters for each element. P'Li for fire, Ghazan for earth, Ming Hua for water and you guessed it Zaheer for air.
While he wasn't as good as Tenzin, and they only defeated him cuz they teamed-up against him. Shame on them.

Zaheer when Korra revisited him looked like he hadn't just been frequently visiting the spirit world, but that he may had more than a few conversations with Iroh while there.
Zaheer’s probably one of the most interesting characters in the Avatar franchise. He went from anarchist to spiritual guide. Hell, in the end, he made Korra a better Avatar and person by helping her let go of her ptsd.

I've been waiting for this video since I first learned of Zaheer's character. I wish we had gotten to see more of him. Book 3 of Korra (for me) was better than the entirety of _Avatar_ : _The Last Airbender_ (for me, at least. I realize many will disagree). But I feel that Zaheer was a _much_ better villain and character than Ozai and also a more complete. After book 3 of LoK, I was actually disappointed and let-down in regards to the whole Kuvira plot.

I do love the idea of Zaheer being helpful in S4 to Korra’a growth because while it sounds terrible in theory of a villain who was only barely stopped from killing the main character, it makes sense with their characters. Korra’s in a dark place and got desperate, meanwhile Zaheer realized that the new Earth Sictator was running around and being a man of peace and freedom, realized the best chance at stopping her was helping the Avatar, helping her to take on someone the Zaheer would have taken on had he not been imprisoned
Is it really prison if you can just pop into the spirit world anytime you want? Not to mention he could walk through a portal and his spirit would freely move around the physical world.
Everyone thinks that their way of life or thinking is always right. Zaheer really thought that all the violence he did was justified to get rid of the "control" of organized government. This is exactly why you need levels of organized authority cause there's always going to be those who do things out of bounds and believe that they can just whatever to whoever. This doesn't mean that government doesn't need oversight but they do serve a purpose in terms of setting up boundaries in which we can manuever within.
