My daughter bought one of these in 2018 and still has it. I assembled it for her and I'm a veteran professional bike mechanic from back in the '60s and '70s. Here's some things to note on setting up to ride: 1) The drive chain comes too tight and if you ride it without giving it the proper slack, it could ruin the output shaft bearing and robs power. 2) It comes jetted lean and is also lean on the jet needle position which doesn't come with alternate positions for the needle. A thin flat washer under the needle retainer brings the mid-range position for a much happier running unit. 3) The chrome plated wire fixtures are cable guides that fit the front forks to keep the cables from snagging against the tire, do use them. Also, there is a slight tendency for the speedo cable to be damaged up near the steering head against some body parts. Take care, the replacement parts for these are way overpriced.
Her machine came with a locking gas cap, lots different than the one shown here. The engine is a knock-off of an engine designed for use in third world circumstances and is different from other Honda engines in being a push-rod design - it also uses one cam lobe for both intake and exhaust. With stock gearing and some break-in miles, 50mph is about as happy as it gets and it does vibrate noticeably in the higher rpm range but will maintain cruise well enough. Change the oil delivered in the machine after a bit of warm up; adjust the valves after it cools from about a 15 minute operating period.
The way it comes in the shipping crate is much like the way a dealer would have gotten them delivered, at least as it was back in the day. Being an experienced mechanic really helps to figure out all the washers and other hardware to make sure it's put together the way they intended.

I got an email stating they sent the box etc, another saying they received it, another stating what the problem was & should ship next day. Next day I had a confirm email w tracking. Great service from my experience. The only negative is it seemed only usable 1 time within that time period. Showed up in my order history as returned items for tv & warranty.

These bikes are really popular in the Dominican Republic and I expect a lot of other less-than-wealthy countries too. It's basically the same bike being sold under lots of different brands. It really is not a bad bike, performance wise for what it is and for the price. The problem is overall quality and reliability. A lot of the parts are just cheap. The flip side is that in areas where these bikes are popular, spare parts are REALLY cheap, You can get what you need in any town in the DR. And given the roads here, which are less than ideal but rarely see see speeds over 60 kph (except the major highways), and the fact that many of them are dirt, it's just about the perfect bike for down here.

This was my first ever motorcycle. Absolutely terrifying to ride on street, because you had zero speed or acceleration advantage to get out of squirrely situations. However it made me a better rider by challenging my situational awareness and predictability. Now riding a Harley with unmatched confidence because of my experience on this bike. Great first bike for learners, if you make it through the first season.

Looks somewhat similar to the motorcycle I started on. Mine was a chinese brand 200cc dual sport with 14 horsepower (claimed) called a wildfire. Tires it came with weren't slightly as knobby and whatnot, but think it was overall pretty similar to this. Was a good learner bike, a bit slow and underpowered for higher speed roads though.

  • @djbeach99
    @djbeach99 Před 4 lety +44

Used to own one of these a few years ago in high school. Absolutely loved it. Only went 45mph full throttle out of the box. By changing the carb jets, opening the air box and swapping sprockets I obtained 65mph with the wind to my back. It still wasn’t fast by any means but they were super cheap modifications. I found that the bike itself is based off an old 1978 Honda engine and sprocket set up. I really only had a few complaints on the bike with the first being that the original chain was absolute crap but I got a better one for like $20. The second was the stock speedometer was very generic looking, replaced that with a $95 digital one. And the third complaint was the original rear sprocket studs. After a few weeks of hard riding and wheelies, the studs sheered right off. Remembering the bike it’s based off of, I purchased OEM Honda studs that fit perfect and lasted for the remainder of ownership. Honestly miss the thing lol

Also modifying the air box to have a larger inlet. With these mods I made the bike feel better and have 2x more torque and power I can pop wheelies in 1,2,3 gears and the bike is no longer cold natured if you get one just remember the lock tight 😂

The metal toy things are to keep the speedo and brake cables from flopping around into your tire,. A little bigger jet will wake it up, and a slightly taller gearing can help. And change the spark plug to a NGK. That can help it run a bit better also.
Break in the engine and change the oil a lot at first.
I've got a 200cc China Bike from 2007. It still runs... Sometimes the electrical stuff can be cheap.. thin wires.
Some seem OK. Just locktite lots of the bolts also to keep them from vibrating loose.
These are good little knock around bikes, for beginners. And cheap enough you don't cry if you break something.
Parts are actually readily available also..

I have a Chinese bike AJS TN12 125. It does what it says on the tin... gets me from A-B. Ok, the servicing is more frequent than a Japanese bike for example BUT, as long as you keep them serviced and looked after they should go for many years. I bought it for peanuts brand new. It is just the bike I need to get me ready for the bigger bikes. It's not where the bike is made, its how the bike makes you feel. Put speed aside..... its the feeling of being on a bike and free that makes people love bikes, when they are small cc bikes they are for fun and to learn. My bike goal is a Ducati Diavel, but this bike is exactly what I need just now to practice on.

There’s tons of 1998-2000 model YZ CR KX RM 125’s that a teenager will have a blast on and is light enough it won’t crush them like this street/trail bike will do. This is just a glorified scooter with dirt tires. This bike would be a blast to ride in metropolitan areas where a scooter just isn’t fast enough and a XR or DR650 is to heavy to yank around. But that is just my opinion, the more a kid rides the faster they get and this Chinese bike would be destroyed in a month.

i am calling it now before even watching it. It is going to be a base model Hawk 250. They are actually fun bikes. I didn't know they were for sale on amazon. I know the Orion models have been for several years. The motor is based on the Honda CG125 motor that has been upsized to 230cc. so not a true 250cc. There are many models and they are great bikes for around town or to work on. Don't forget to check the valves and change the motor and fork oil. once they are properly broken in they are slightly faster. Which is a characteristic of the Honda CG motor. You might also want to look into changing the rear sprocket.
Edit: just finished the video, several things. I hope you changed the oil, as what came in it is just shipping oil. Your valve lashings are out of spec. .05 on the intake and .08 on the exhaust. They take alot of Honda 230 parts, like the exhaust. That is the base level hawk 250. There are models with USD forks and even EFI. There should have been a manual. Dont know why there wasn't. A tip for installing the front wheel. You should have left it on the crate. Then unbolted the front and lifted it up. Those "toys" where to hold the cables ion the front fork.

Spring goes on the kickstand and those “roller ball thingies” are for keeping the cables in place on the fork somewhere.
Honestly, it’s not very reassuring, that you nonchalantly refer to a “ton of extra parts” that most likely belong on the bike before riding, and you sell used, refurbished bikes to people.

I own a 2019 Hawk DLX, basically the same as the regular but it has EFI instead of the normal carb. the box-o-parts actually does come with a handful more of screws, rubber/metal washers, and some extra rubber wire buffers. and I can say from just 6 months of work on it to replace ALL the bolts and screws with any other origin of manufacture. it'll save you time later on.
but for how cheap it is, it's pretty cheap to maintain. a half decent choice if you like light trail riding or something that, even with all the upgrades you can do to push the little 229 cc motor to the limit, can only hit about 70 mph on a very good day. mine is now basically just a commuter since no roads where I live have roads that go over 45.
