the archons in genshin impact, bar the tsarista (venti, zhongli, ei and nahida) are either really good at being puppets to celestia and the heavenly principles, or having been lying to us about how much they really know regarding certain matters in teyvat. i didnt include focalors or furina in this because we never met focalor and furina is just a human who doesnt really know much of the wisdom of the gods regarding the gnoses and descenders.

I think Zhongli would know about what the gnoses truly are since the only reason he gave up his gnosis was because of the contract he made with the Cryo Archon. He willingly gave it up.

On the surface Zhongli gave up his gnosis for 2 reasons,
      1. Because he no longer desired to be geo archon and wished for liyue to rule itself
      2. Because he claims he will soon begin to suffer from erosion and that takes its more dangerous form when there is immense power at play
The biggest question regarding the whole zhonlgi situation is what the tsarista gave zhongli to balance out him giving up his gnosis, but regardless of whether or not he knows the truth behind the gnoses he and the rest of the archons know they are valuable.

That wasnt the reason, that was the means. The real reason was because he didnt want to be an archon anymore as in his eyes humanity could protect themselves now. So he made a contract in which if the humans and adepti could defend liyue without him interfering then he would step down as an archon and give up his Gnosis. He bet against himself, let the fatui do whatever they wanted to do (wake up osial) all so the humans and adepti had to defend Liyue and prove his point, the contract that ends all contracts. Liyue is free of their archon rules, the fatui get the gnosis and Zhong can act like a normal person now. So yeah, the contract with the Fatui was just a means to achieve the end he wanted. Like he explains the gnosis only purpose for him (at that point) was to make mora, something he won't have to do when he is not in power (because he is still an archon), so why not leverage it to free liyue and himself od Celestia machinations?

Ei and Nahida are definitely open books. it's just that Ei was too tunnel-visioned on Makoto getting killed that she didn't see much during the Cataclysm. and Nahida was born after the death of Rukkha so she definitely didn't know much about it.

  • @Nowaylarry

About Nahida not having the full picture despite her access to Irminsul. If the Gnosis are remains of a Descender then details about them likely aren't in the memory of Irminsul (much like how the Traveler doesn't belong to Teyvat). As for Venti, he has been established to lie when he deems it needed. I suspect he does know more than he lets on (though probably not the whole picture). Raiden and Focalors just don't have any reason to care much about their respective Gnosis. Who knows about Zhongli.
As for the handing out of visions. My guess is that it is a semi automated process that the divine thrones themselves handle and that Archons only have access to the throne's authority, not full control of it (a fail safe for Celestia to maintain control). Neuvillette has the ability to hand out visions directly because he has complete control over the authority of hydro since the divine throne was destroyed (no interference).

    • @DumbestDumbFool

I don't think neuvillette will give vision to furina though, knowing how much suffering she had for so long, how could he gave her responsibility to bear a power that many look for. I think the archons authorities are the overseers and the thrones but these aren't the same as archons of Teyvat, I think they're linked by divinity and the gnosis but they're split. I think how the archons in Celestia see, is through the archons on Teyvat and or the gnosis.

Kinda off topic but I’ve noticed that every archon is a pure for, of their respective element, or was born from a pure form or originally a pure form of it.
      Venti was a wind spirit
Zhongli I believe was a earth spirit, unless the info I read was wrong
Ei and makoto if the info I read was correct were born from pure electro energy
Nahida and rhukkadevata are of the same species, I guess. Not sure what word to use, but they are both the avatars of irminsul, and nahida was born from the purest branch of irminsul. Which would be pure dendro energy.
And finally egeria was the heart of the primordial sea, which is literally water and that would be a pure form of hydro, and focalors was originally a oceanid which I believe is a pure hydro elemental life form.

I was curious about the Archons lying as well so, I did a little research myself and this is what I found. (Seven ideas for seven Gods) It’s a contract between the Archons and Celestia. This contract was signed 2000 years ago. When the Traveler asked Jhongli about their twin, Jhongli had said he had signed a contract and that he wouldn’t break that said contract to tell the Traveler about their twin. I’m just guessing but, I’m thinking all Archons have signed the same contract because it says “whereby the Archons agreed to act as the rulers and jailers of humanity by making sure they cannnot/will not rebel against the power of celestia.” I’m also thinking that’s when the Archons got the gnosis so Celestial could spy on Teyvat to make sure the Archons were staying true to their contract. It does put things into perspective and why the Archons gave the gnosis to the Fatui. Last stop is Natlan, we know that Captain will eventually get the gnosis and I can’t wait to see how this all plays out. I’m super excited! Great video btw!

There's no way this guy who was one of the original seven did not know what purpose the gnoesisises serve, he's literally the only one whos even mentioned allogenes iirc so he definitely picked up a few keywords from celestia despite his drunken stupor.
Though between the 500 year naps and endless drinking, it's a wonder he could tell us anything at all. The knowledge has likely all eroded away along with his brain to facilitate a more convenient vessel for his drinking.

After 4.2, the dialogue between Zhongli and Azhdaha sounds different. "I'm no longer the geo archon." "I can sense it." But how does an archon resign, really? Now that we know gnosis and authorities over the elements are different things, it seems only the divine seat defines who is an archon. The gnosis can totally be absent and said god is still an archon. And from the catalysm we can see this divine seat won't be vacant for long. Soon, successors will emerge. But, no new geo archon has emerged thus far. So, what was azhdaha sensing in Zhongli that made him know he is no longer the geo archon? Either Zhongli is still archon but just abandoned his duty, or somehow he also blew up the geo seat and transferred the authority...somewhere else.

@@DawitsLookingforEmiliabut that would mean no other archon is an archon besides the cryo(?) and pyro archon. However we know that that isn’t necessarily true. Nahida, ei, and Venti are all still considered archons(tho furina is also considered the archon despite being human). So there has to be more to it, perhaps it’s because Zhongli decided to step down and give his gnosis away, perhaps it’s another reason. All we know for sure is that Gnosis are the remains of the 3rd descender and have a portion of the dragons authority.
Speaking of that, if the gnosis have a portion of the dragons authority then they very well could make an archon an archon. The gnosis may be used to give the Archons that portion of the elemental authority, and that is why they cannot give out visions at their free will, but rather do it unknowingly. This could also actually be how celestial maintains authority in teyvat, they use the gnosis to keep the sovereigns from being able to fight back by taking away a large chunk of their power.

I think the Visions are created subconsciously by those holding the Elemental Thrones, given to those who match the ideals of the person on the throne. The reason no electro visions were made is because Ei didn’t want humans to have visions, but she is not actively stopping it, it’s just responding to her view on humanity.

I suspect the gnosis are how celestia grants visions to humans through shared ambitions of the respective elemental gods or prescripted ambitions.
As Ei didnt possess her gnosis the established connection was dormant and her ambitions faultered so no visions were gifted during the sakoku decree
Focalors gifted hydro visions through her shared ambition to strive for the greater good( divine justice in her case) as indicated by the requirents for receiving a hydro vision. She also possessed her gnosis at the time when she resided in the oratrice. Since the gnosis was destroyed with focalors, the original power was returned to the hydro dragon and celestia lost control over hydro. Neuvilette could then gift visions at his own will and through his own ambitions.
The only question is how wanderer received an anemo vision if venti doesnt possess it, unless a new holder of the anemo gnosis within the fatui exists. As long as the gnosis has a holder, i believe visions can be granted through their shared ambition or a set ambition, since wanderer still got a vision according to the original anemo vision requirements

    Destination: Finding your sibling
    End: Leaving this world
"Traveler, as you set off on your journey once again, you must remember that the journey itself has meaning. The birds of Teyvat, the songs and the cities, the Tsaritsa, her Fatui and the monsters... they all are part of your journey. The destination is not everything. So before you reach the end, keep your eyes open. Use the chance to take in the world around you..."
    -Venti
Venti reminds us to focus on the journey. Meaning rather than the Archons giving us straight forward answers, we must experience (Teyvat) ourselves. It's probably not because they don't know anything but rather can only tell us what they are allowed to tell and share the rest when we are ready. They must also not try to incur the wrath of Celestia or their land and people will be destroyed. In the travails trailer even Dainsleif said to show us the meaning of our journey. The archons never come across as know-nothings to me. The way they've been acting is they know more than you but only tell you what you need to hear. Ei would be an exception considering Makoto generally governs the land and its people while she deals with the military and fighting. Nahida is fairly new but considering her access to knowledge is based on what irminsul has stored, she can only tell you what she could find in it and hypothesize the rest.

Tsaritsa isn’t the only archon to rebel against the gods, Focalors has also done this in the recent archon quest.
Anyways, I have my own theory about who the speculated resurrection of Natlan will be, and I think it makes more sense to be one of the 7 sovereigns, since the final goal is “the old world” and the celestials are not of the old world, contrary to popular belief.

Id argue Focalors merely deceived the heavenly principles rather then "rebelled" against them.
For her to "rebel" she would have needed to find a way to prevent the prophecy from happening which was impossible. Instead she simply found a version of the prophecy that didnt result in everyones deaths.
The tsarista on the hand is soon going to be taking the fight directly to celestia and isn't mincing words about it

Tbh I think that the archon system is a double security measure.we know that early humans worshiped Celestia directly or through the sheelies. Shelves used to do what archons do now, just in a much larger scale. Celestia tried to revive this system with the gods after the battle with the second who came, but it backfired as humans banded together with these gods and worshiped them instead of celestia. When the 3rd descender came e was probably on the same power or close to Celestia amd they saw an opportunity. They made the Gnosis out of the 3rd descender remains, pit the gods against each other leaving them to clean after themselves. They made the archon system we have now to control humanity (as they can communicate with the archons through the gnosis and probably get that faith energy using that connection) and keep the 3rd descender remains from coming together (as the more Gnosis you have the more fundamental laws of teyvat you can manipulate). In this way, Celestia gets worshipped, humanity still follows the archons and the archons are mouth pieces for Celestia. But something is wrong, probably the First Who Came got corrupted by the forbidden knowledge (the sustainer of the heavenly principles might be what's left of the first who came after it made the shades, but regardless she is clealry corrupted and she lives in Celestia right?) When battling the second who came and it needs rest a la venti? 😴 lol, but in all seriousness we know Celestia has been silent for a long time and the way I see it there's two options: Celestia might be silent because everything that is happening (the tsaritza rebellion, the abyss, neuvillete, etc...) is going according to their plans OR celestia just can't do anything because it's weakened by the corruption after fighting the second who came (presumably Nibelung after coming back with Forbidden Knowledge and finding Teyvat with the giant civilization of Humans instead of the light realm with Vishaps and his fellow dragons).

    Aether:
    - Aether’s name has lived on to a certain degree, being a name once used for the presumed fifth element, as well as being used occasionally to refer to the air and space.
    - The concept of a void, also known as the aether, refers to the idea of a hypothetical space or medium that fills the uni.
    - Ether or Aether, in physics and astronomy, a hypothetical medium for transmitting light and heat (radiation), filling all unoccupied space; it is also called, "Luminiferous Ether."
    - Aether particles are hurled from the Sun and all luminous bodies and sources.
Fatui Harbingers: In the Commedia dell'Arte. (MISSING TITLES)
Innamorati the Lovers: The couple and main leads. They don't have to wear masks unlike the rest of the casts.
    - Pantalone: He is usually the father of one of, "the Lovers." He is driven to keep his child and the lover apart.
    - Ill Dottore: He can be the father to one of, "the Lovers," usually either Columbina or Isabella.
    - There are some stories where Dottore is not a father.
Brighella the Cunning: The older brother of Arlecchino who is a lot smarter than him. He is the most cunning out of the 12.
Almost forgot Il Capitano: The Beserker (Most people thinks hes the Bloodstained Knight)
    - In a barren and lifeless land, he encountered a giant monster. (Assuming a Dragon)
    - Reborn in FLAMES, vengeance and bloodlust took over the warrior's mind, turning him into a berserker. (This dudes clearly from Natlan)
    - The berserker kept roaring until the fresh blood covered the black clots hardened on his face.
    - Within the flames, he was horribly burned and lost his sanity, but devoted himself to revenge and fought back, his mask fusing to his face.
    - The chin guard of the Berserker Mask is missing.

It is not accurate that they hold the elements ONLY they hold the dragon authority the element is probably just a biproduct of that. What is more important is having control over "the laws of this world". Now this should be how fates are given out what is regarded a a sin in Theyvat, creating a lifeform other than your own among many things. This is realised with the help of Irminsul and what Apep means that the losers must turn to ash, is that they are erased by Irminsul almost completely. The Contract to end all contracts, must be how visions are wielded and in return Zhongli gave up his Gnosis. We know Zhongli regards visions as a form of contract. It may even be why Focalors is able to defy the heavenly principles in the first place. If the bargain was "were the gods gaze does not reach" that would mean that Zhongli KNEW what would happen, as he often talks about being a witness of Theyvat.
Zhongli and Neuvilette are the ONLY one's that does not have a matching name to their story quest and their constellations meaning they have two fates. Everyone else has their constellation as the name of the story quest. It also heavily points to the possiblity of Zhongli being a dragon in the past as his exuvia takes the shape of a dragon. We know dragons are not affected by Irminsul because Apep recalls things that Irminsul should not permit. Zhongli states that he has "dwelt upon this world for more than 6000 years" he does not say that he was born in Theyvat.

In terms of the knowledge the Archons have over the 'truths' of this world, I think it's safe to say the members of the Seven that rose after the Cataclysm probably don't know as much as the older members do, and the most knowledge probably lies with the Orginal Seven. The new Seven - Focalors and Buer, didn't really have a chance to get much info as Celestia had presumably gone dormant after their ascension and they were both preoccupied by the state of their nations. (The prophecy and being trapped by the sages.) Beelzlebul/Ei is in a similar vein, she was never the Archon, ergo had no reason to possess whatever knowledge her sister did, and wasn't particularly interested in finding out. Meaning that of the current Archons left, the only ones we can get any answers from is the Pyro Archon, The Tsaritsa, or Venti.
I suspect Venti knows a great deal, but would rather not speak of it. It's a habit of his you can witness in the comic, despite his great knowledge he has a tendency to divert the subject. He most likely took advantage of the fact since the Traveler was new to the world, they would trust his authority as a god and not question his answers without any basis too. (And even then, I think he moreso told us half-truths than outright lying.) Probably the reason Venti's 2nd story quest has been held off for so long, as a character with one of the most direct connections to one of the 4 Shades, it's likely going to reveal some key information about the world.
As for why the Tsaritsa is the only one who wants to rebel- well, I'd say nuking a divine throne and restoring the power back to the Sovereign can honestly be counted as rebellion- but personally, I think while all of them vibe with 'fuck Celestia', they don't feel comfortable with direct action since, A.They probably don't think they'd ever win, and B. The cost to their people would be too great, whether or not they win or lose. The Tsaritsa, on the other hand, given her goal to 'burn the old world' (which personally, I think refers to the current one, and the wording is just the Fatui being so sure of their success that they already think there's a new world ahead), probably has either come to terms with this fact, or believes the damage dealt to her people will be worth the chance of victory.
Lastly, on the topic of visions, TVTropes provided an interesting theory as to what's happening with Electro Visions, speculating that the reason no new visions have been granted is not because of the Archon, but rather an unresolved story with the Electro Sovereign and the authority of Electro. Can't say it has any basis to build off- but I feel like it's interesting idea to share

I think all the Archons know or have an idea of what is happening. Otherwise they would not have given up their gnoses so easily. I think they are all distancing themselves from Celestia and have allowed the Tsaritsa to take the lead in whatever is coming. I think they have all known for slightly more than the last 500 years, which would be about when the Travelers were “heavenly summoned “ to Teyvat. The Traveler lived with the Jester, when he was a royal Madge in the court of Khaenri’ah, which would have been before the downfall of Khaenri’ah around the year 500. Sometime slightly before or around the beginning of the end, the Jester created the Fatui and the Harbingers for the Tsaritsa. Dainslief also went from being the Twilight Sword, to becoming the Boughkeeper with access to Irminsul. He or both he and the Jester had the power to manipulate and control the Traveler’s mind. Remember how Clothar jumps all over Lumine for not being who the Khaenri’ahns thought she was to become? The Abyss princess? This war at the year 500 was so awful, not only humans suffered, but the gods suffered as well. (Venti is a drunk, Zhongli has no sense of finances, or financial dysmorphia. Ei went into hiding with extreme anxiety or agoraphobia. Focalors determined she would pull a fast one on the heavenly principles by creating Farina as a false god and Niheda was imprisoned by the Head scholars of Sumeru.)

the way Ei said her line... it does actually coincide with what Neuvilllette said. She simply stated "it is not by me will that Visions are granted or denied.". what this means is that.... she herself is not the one who chooses who to give the vision to. Celestia is the one choosing who to give out Visions... she simply gives them away without knowing who these people are... and from what her words meant. She HAS been handing out visions. But it came as a surprise to her that none of them went outside of Inazuma.
