I’d agree, so many of those sounds are basically pitch perfect and really get me back to that same emotional spot hearing them. Excellent feel and execution!
The saddest part is that I feel that Kurt was just beginning to utilize his many talents. He had so much more music in him whether it was with Nirvana, Solo, or another band. Just sad to see all the loses from the Seattle Scene over the years.
Personally, I would not say that I would have evolved directly. Some of the technical or musical decisions made by Nirvana back then were not always better than before. For me personally, this is not an evolution, but just a change. As a simple man in the street, I adore the Nirvana of 1990-1991, and as a guitarist and musician, the Nirvana of 1988-1989, imho
The amount of effort and research that went into this video is staggering. It really sounds like I'm listening to isolated live Nirvana guitar tracks. Great job!
For those who don't know The Fender twin reverb can get identical sounds as Kurt's Mesa boogie (his live rig) The wiring in the fender twin reverb is essentially the same as Kurt's Mesa boogie (clean channel) The Mesa boogie has a EQ circuit while The fender reverb doesn't. That's pretty much the only difference. You can get his exact tones with a fender reverb and a transistor driven EQ pedal. Speakers are also just as important as well There's another fellow CZcamsr named Aaron Rash who is immensely obsessed with Kurt's studio/live tones more than anyone else. Dude has insane amounts of knowledge when it comes to guitar gear and sounds. Builds amps and pedals too. Learned alot of info from him I reckon some of his content might interest you as well.
A lot of people don't realise that Mesa/Boogie started out as a Fender modding company and therefore A LOT of their amps can be very closely replicated tone-wise by the respective fender amps they were based on!
I might be weird but I love raw, thin razor-like guitar tone at Live And Loud. Also the distortion pedal switches are very audible in that mix and I just think it's pretty cool
I do like the pedal switching sounds too, makes listening very immersive! Live and Loud mix nails everything else. I think the drums, bass and vocals sound great my only gripe is the guitar tone
It's unbelievable how far away Kurt's guitar is in the mix. They just cut the instruments in four quarters: 2x guitar, 1x bass and 1x drums all 25% of the pie. I like Pat's and Krist's parts but some bass sounds like Deftones and Kurt's solo's are just buried. Most useless mix ever.
Amazing to see man. Nirvana was my childhood. I saw the last In Utereo show in San Diego. I was a kid so my Mom took me and I'll never forget it... It was only a few months later that everything went down with Kurt. I can tell you 100% that that guitar tone is embedded in my head. You're damn close.. I'm sure in post it would be perfect! I did the same thing you did with Daisy Berkowitz, Down to the same rare guitar! I get your adventure and its a damn fun and expensive one! Keep up the amazing work my friend!

Bravo! Your tone master twin sounds amazing for Kurt's sound, especially the clean tone, crystal clear highs with a full and tight low end. Really enjoyed all your videos so far!
Thank you so much! I was nervous when I first got the Twin that I wouldn't be able to do many Kurt tones, but man was I wrong! I've been extremely happy with the Nirvana tones I can get out of it
I learned Nirvana songs by obsessively watching their concerts when I had just started playing guitar. So for better or worse, Kurt’s habits became ingrained into my own style!
Same goes for me. I studied his playing and everything when I was 11 years old. I am now 38 and ever since played the same chords Kurt used. Which were more or less only 2 :D But I always liked the minimalistic style he was playing those chords.
Killing it with these videos man 🤘. I remember learning so many Nirvana songs once I really got into them. All those riffs are so much fun to play. I think my favorite one to play is School. That transition from just the guitar into the full band gets me every time.
Thank you for the time and effort you spend to make this video! All nirvana fans will appreciate this. It's nice after 28 years of Kurt Cobain death to remember the amazing music of those amazing guys! Nice guitars by the way.
No problem, thank you for the kind words and for watching! I’m making the kind of videos I wish I could’ve found when I first started playing. Hopefully someone who just started playing guitar because of Nirvana finds my channel and my settings help them 🙂
I worked with nirvana UK a little while ago. Their guitar player had the Mesa pre amp and power amp you mentioned going into a Marshall 4x12. As soon as he played the intro to heart shaped box it clicked! It was spot on perfect!
Just wanted to say as a fellow Nirvana fan who also plays guitar.... Well Done Sir!!!! You are actually one of the few people who are on point when playing the songs the way Kurt Played them (chord placing on frets wether power chord or regular chord) I applaud your attention to detail that so many people miss!!! Granted chords can be interchanged but just that extra little detail sets this video apart from everyone else out there!!! Keep up the good work buddy!! If anyone wants to know how you get a PolyChorus sound from 3 very cheap pedals (all 3 pedals cost around $60 to $75) let me know I will explain and post a photo!! I wanted a PolyChorus so bad but being the only one working in my home with a wife and 3 kids kinda hard to shell out that much money!!!!
Thank you!! I strive for accuracy in these videos, gear wise and playing wise so i appreciate that! When I had just started playing guitar, I learned Nirvana songs by watching shows and obsessively watching Kurt’s hands. For better or for worse, Kurt’s techniques became ingrained in mine!
Awesome video! Just for reference I don't think he was consistant with distortion he used but I'm sure he primarily used the Sansamp the most. That shot from the show where he switches the DS2 on for the pre choruses in Smells Like Teen Spirit and then to the Sansamp was not the norm all the time. Seeing multiple live shots of the In Utero Tour he always changes it up. Apart from that the tone is pretty dam spot on.
Thank you! Completely agree that the sansamp was mostly likely his main distortion. Also agree that that clip of him using both is not the norm, but it’s the only footage I know of for reference that gives us a clear view of him using the DS2. Hopefully In Utero 30th show(s) will give us a better reference 🤞🏻
Duude, finally someone that really digs into his gear and tone. I totally share your opinion on the DS-2 usage on this tour and absolutely love your tone, which is way closer to his than the tone that most people think is the 'Cobain sound'. Really love your channel and the info in it (the videos about the proto and this one are priceless) Please keep on doing videos like this!
I really appreciate that thank you so much! I’m happy there’s Nirvana gear fanatics like me that enjoy this nerdy content 😁 I would love to know how he actually used the DS-2, but all we can do is guess with the material that’s available to us. I had a lot of fun trying to dial in this tone, it was super satisfying once I got close! Agree with what you said about the ‘Cobain Sound’, I think he’s mostly known for his Jaguar to DS-2 late 91 tone but I think his skystang to Sansamp tone is so much better 🎸
@@NirvanaGuitars Maybe he used his DS-2 as a booster for some solos, or generate more feedback for songs like School, but it definitely sounds like his main distortion was the Sansamp, which sounds great!. And yeah, I think the band was at his best during the whole In Utero tour, they sounded incredibly tight, with the crazy light effects, Kurt's guitar sound was really refined and having Pat in the band filled the whole sound, which makes me prefer by far their sound on 93-94 than late 91. It would be nice if that tone was more known to the people rather than Nevermind's.
Thank you for the pedal settings for radio friendly unit shifter, it's one of my favorite to play and having the exact tone makes me feel like I'm playing live with nirvana

Awesome, distortion sounds great, amazing job. I just wanted to say on the E chord of Serve the Servants main riff, its G#, not G. 😗😗😗😗 All the best, very very good video!!
Absolutely nailed the tone given the amp you had to work with. It's incredibly close! Just want to pipe in on the Bootlegs vs Live And Loud topic you mentioned. To my ears, the bootlegs are a similar if not identical tone, but recorded from as far away from the speakers as possible to not blow out the mic, thus picking up the room acoustics and filling in the lower frequencies. I agree with chasing the fuller tone for a solo guitar reason, however in the context of a band mix, i'd prefer a tone closer to Live And Loud and let a 2nd guitar and a bass fill in the gaps
Thank you! I have since regretted using a bootleg comparison for the Live & Loud portion of the video, as there are a small handful of SBD recordings from that tour that would've been better to compare it to. Check out Serve the Servants from the Verse Chorus Verse tape and The Man Who Sold The World from the recent Outcesticide 2022. Those show how much low end Kurt's tone had!
