    Amp Settings at 14:40
    Obviously this is a stripped down approach to attempting to capture some of the tones from the famous album, as I don’t have access to the same gear Butch Vig used to produce. Even if I did have access I wouldn’t know how to use all the studio gear he used, lets be honest.
    Instead, I have gone for a basic approach. 1 amp, a few pedals and a few guitars using an sm57 to capture the sounds to my MacBook Pro through my Scarlett Focusrite 2i2.
    In reality Kurt used many amps and guitars, and multiple techniques including track layering with multiple different amps/guitars to get that massive sound. Besides that, Butch Big employed many producer techniques to get that doubling effect for Lithium and Territorial Pissings (at least I think he did). So instead of that I used my trusty Small Clone for doubling effects.
    I tried to catch my pedal settings for most of the songs, but if you can’t make any out let me know in the comments and I will try to remember them for you!
    Excuse any sloppy playing as usual!
    Hope you all enjoyed the video!
    I think the tone got close here, what do you think?
    Please remember to like, comment, and subscribe!
    As usual I don't own any of the music in this video, all rights go to their respective owners!

    It's impressive to see someone take the time to actually play SLTS how Kurt did, using upstrokes on the first and third chord of the chorus. Little things like that elevate covers from good to great, and man, was this great. Kudos to you for really going the extra mile.

    • @cloud_monkey422
      @cloud_monkey422 Před 5 lety

      Orochi you play it the same way as you would any guitar.
      The H is for humbucker in the bridge on both guitars so either way it’s a humbucker.
      Which you don’t even need really.
      Watch videos of Kurt playing live and I’m sure you will see him use a single or a humbucker at any given time.
      My single is technically a humbucker to some ppl but that doesn’t really matter.
      Play it with how you want to play it unless you’re tying to match the sound

    Alot of people don't know that KURDT KOBAIN actually came out of rehab on a day pass to record the video for 'COME AS YOU ARE'. However he insisted that all the shots of him, especially up close, had to be distorted, due to the fact that he was EXTREMELY DOPE SICK!!! So, largely due to the Chorus Pedals contribution to the songs "watery sound", KURDT insisted on a waterfall effect to obscure his face, thus giving the entire song, & video, that dark, ominous, brooding, and foreboding 'FEEL!' Which, as with practically every facet of
    KURDT'S artistic endeavors, the fruits of his labor would've been very well received, no matter what form his 'CONTRIBUTION' may have taken!!!
    And as far as profit, alot of people don't know that KURDT KOBAIN, at the behest of COURTNEY LOVE, actually petitioned for the Lions share of the groups money, leaving Krist & Dave to split the remaining 50%. Which is reasonable considering that KURDT wrote the lyrics, the music, including the Bass, & Drum portions, then relayed how he wanted it to be played to 'The Rhythm Section' before recording. He should have given Dave a chance ALOT sooner than he did, to play a far more productive role within NIRVANA. They could have been a 'SUPERGROUP', however KURDT'S PERFECTIONISM is what was likely the cause of his drive to personally take the helm in regards to their music.

    Something ive always found interesting is that while people like Nevermind's riffs a bit more usually, Bleach was a bit more complex guitarwise. Like he plays certain songs a particular way on Bleach that a lot of people might not catch the little parts to and it throws off the song. Watch someone play the riffs off of it like this without any backing and youll see what I mean

    Read your description and I thought you came pretty close if nothing else.
    Seeing shit like this makes me realize there’s just too much into recreating the magic that was Nevermind hence the term, “lightning in a bottle”, but I think you did a pretty good job.
    Me personally, I just purchased the NOS Jaguar myself. Already have the Jagstang I bought in 97!

    Don't think KC used a sans amp till In Utero, using a Boss OD1 instead, but none the less you're getting the amazingly close tone.
    When I had a go at chasing the nevermind tones I found that the small clone on minimum settings did an ok job at getting close to that layered guitar sounds, or even better (when I had one) a rotary speaker cabinet. But like I say this is for approximating the sound of the layered guitar tracks on nevermind (with one guitar) not cos KC ever used these things this way.

    • @alexrcowan
      @alexrcowan  Před 4 lety

      No he didn’t, I’m not even using the same sansamp model as that. I just found with my setup I could approximate the tonality of the DS1 more closely on my setup with a sansamp gt2 than I could with the DS2

    • @JR_Taylor
      @JR_Taylor Před 4 lety

      Regarding the layered guitar tones I mentioned, I forgot to say that the small clone works best blended in with the unmodulated tone.

  • @guitarguy7847
    @guitarguy7847 Před 5 lety +5

    That’s a great tone! How much does a Jag like that cost? I live in the UK and it’s about £1,300 and I’m not sure how much it is in Australia.

    • @GuyNamedSean
      @GuyNamedSean Před 4 lety

      I think it's because there are multiple guitar tones mixed together on the album. I'm pretty sure Breed has a heavy fuzz mixed with a lower overdrive so it can maintain definition on the album version. Butch Vig had them track tons of different guitars together while recording to give the songs that big and powerful sound.

    The ProCo RAT Distortion was fire. You replicated the Tone for Territorial Pissings. The only pedals I have is a Boss OS-2 Overdrive to replicate the DS-1 and Turbo DS-2, A Big Muff Pi pedal and a Boss CH-1 Super Chorus to replicate The Small Clone.

  • @cr_3891
    @cr_3891 Před 5 lety

    I don’t think he used sans amp until in Utero but I love the sound. Also the other distortion pedals like the Rat and Big Muff were used on the songs he used them on exactly. Great job man, keep it up!

    • @alexrcowan
      @alexrcowan  Před 5 lety

      Coby Cooper no, he didn’t use a sansamp. He was using a DS1 and a combination of amps including I believe a modified Fender bassman, as well as his Mesa, and an AC30. I found it too hard to get an exact sound for each track since I don’t have the gear so somewhat simulated a Mesa Mark style distortion using the sansamp

    • @cr_3891

    Hiya I’ve got an unrelated question
    On a mustang if I put a Seymour Duncan jb jr in the bridge and put both the switches to the right (for a right handed player)
    Will the sound be twangy if not what sound does it make
    Thank you
    Awesome video and videos
    :)

    • @alexrcowan
      @alexrcowan  Před 5 lety +1

      Orange Potato farmer I find the sounds you get on a mustang with a bridge humbucker when you put both pickups in phase or even out phase to be very similar to if you have two single coils. The difference is that you will get slightly more output, particularly with the two pickups on and in phase (both switches going the same way). So it will tonally be generally twangy like normal, just a bit louder.
