  • A round trip on the J line, beginning with the sunset-lit trip to Jamaica Center and ending with the evening return trip to Broad Street. If you are not a train nerd, this footage was shot through the front of an R42 type car, which gives passengers access to the front and back door windows. The newer cars, which monopolize the J line as of March 2020, don't have this access due to bigger driver cabs.
This footage was taken in January 2020, after the retirement and then un-retirement of the R42s due to problems in the R179 cars that were meant to replace them, which is why they aren't anywhere in the video other than the ENY Yard. You can see several other enthusiasts and railfans along the journey.
All the music was made by my friend Desmos. Check him and some of his beats out here: / @zdesmos
The timelapse itself is perhaps not of the highest of qualities, even being 4K. It's a bit shaky, tilted, and has white balance and exposure issues, but I think it's not too shabby for being taken with a handheld compact camera.

An apology to the early viewers: You won't be able to watch this in 4K for a bit, my bad for publishing it too soon after it finished processing!

The unretirement era was a good day, caught all R42's running on a Saturday.

I agree. It was nice seeing R42s run more for the last time

I'm a huge advocate for more composition and experimental films. I've been trying to hop on the trend and I hope I eventually can. What's some advice on that?

Well I wouldn't really call it a trend (unless I'm unaware of a recent spike in people trying experimental film), since it's been a thing for quite a while. I also wouldn't really call this specific video experimental; Atlantic Branch is a much better example. As for advice, I would say just try stuff. When I made Atlantic Branch, I was just trying stuff. Eventually I would like to try using an actual film camera. Also, if you don't already know about it I would highly recommend checking out the Anthology Film Archives in the East Village. They're probably closed right now because of the pandemic, but they have a lot of experimental and avant-garde films in their archives. About a year ago they dedicated a month to screening films about infrastructure and transit, which was very inspiring.

To me the nice ones are the non-renovated ones!
