It's so nice to be reminded of when the so called ' Beautiful Game' was played with a proper sensible, nicely balanced Leather Ball ( which didn't fly all over the place like in a '5 an side' game)
And when hard Tackling& competitive challenges were treated & acknowledged as a skill& integral part of the game!

I agree. The new waffle ball football is hard to take.

Liverpool, a work in progress leading to a devastating long-lasting team winning trophies into the late 1980s and Derby a fantastic but short-lived team managed by a genius who went on to win two European Cups with an equally short-lived unit.

If I remember right, at the end of this season Derby bought David Nish for £225,000, a big deal in the papers and On the Ball etc and a British transfer record..

    Classic Matches,
Thanks for this entertaining programme-good game from Anfield with less-famous Liverpool player Jack Whitham with a hat-trick and fine performance matched by good show at the back for Derby by McFarland. Good commentary by Gerald Sinstadt.

I'd forgotten how much Gerald Sinstadt sounds like Eric Idle

Question for the United fans: how long did your yellow and blue away kit last? I can remember United in the 70s wearing white, white and black, white with a red trim but never yellow and blue. However, my memories are from mid 70s onwards, not early 70s.

White boots on Tommy Smith and Derby's Colim Todd. Interesting as when Donadoni stepped out in white boots for Milan 24 (?) years later in the European Cup Final, it was seen as being completely novel.

Jack Whitham's career never got going when it should have looking at this. He played only 111 matches in 9 yrs for a few clubs & obviously his Liverpool career never took off. Peter Cormack came in his place who was a beautiful player. The Boot Room was pretty ruthless for plenty of players who got the boot & celebrated ones too. Paisley always looked to the future.
