Phil is correct if you use a regular Phillips screwdriver you will strip the screws. They are not Phillips's head. They are JIS Japanese Industrial standard. If you don't have one for your RCs you can buy them on Amain Hobbies for cheap. Maybe Phil can post a link. With the correct driver, you won't strip them as easily.
A JIS was the best ever purchased I ever made when building Tamiya kits :) Amazon has loads of them
The 80's brought out the PEAK design for rally cars and the like. Ive always wanted an old Audi Quattro from 1986 with the big bulbs on the front and massive rear end bumper. Love the vids Phil.
3 WEEK OWNERSHIP UPDATE.!
I got the Impreza version of this about 3 weeks ago (I'd pre-ordered the Audi but it got set back so I got the Impreza instead)..
I put a better more powerful brushless system in it out the box.
(3800Kv/3660 Surpass motor, Hobbywing 120Amp ESC running on 3S)
On the 1st run the front lost drive because the drive cup grub screw came loose, I took it out to find it had been cross threaded.
I replaced it with a higher quality one & threadlocked it, I did the same with the rear... All good now.
The tyres lasted 4 runs on dry tarmac before they wore down to the point of being useless... they're made from really crap rubber, they started peeling & chunking immediately.
After only the first run it was apparent they weren't going to last long.. Carisma want £30 for a set btw 😂.!!
I've replaced them with Ebay "1/10 rc buggy tyres" that cost around £12, they look the same as the Fastrax "cuboid" ones & most likely are the same, but half the price.!
They've already lasted about 6 times as long & are only partly worn.!!
When I opened the centre diff it was absolutely bone dry, it wasn't even greased.. I put 500,000 oil in the centre diff.. It's all gone now, so the centre diff won't hold oil worth a F*.... Which is nice. 😉
The front & rear diffs had a touch of grease in them, I put 50K in the front & 80K in the rear, they seem to be holding it in.
Unfortunately though, the front diff now has an alarming amount of play in it, when moving the wheels back & forth there's a clicking sensation... I think the differential case has worn where the spider gears sit.!
The differential cups front, rear & centre are already starting to wear where the dogbone driveshafts sit.!
I've had issues with the ridiculously soft phillips/cross head screws, they strip extremely easily.!!
I needed to use my dremell to remove a screw holding in the steering post & the rest are borderline stripped.!!
This car is not an easy car to work on..!!!
It's awkward to work on & not well thought out.!
It doesn't exactly scream high quality... It doesn't even whisper it to be fair..

It does however look awesome, the bodyshell is very thick & has good detail... Though the windows aren't clear.! 😡!
It drives very nicely though the turning circle is laughably bad, like it's literally bloody ridiculous.!!
With it being narrow for a traditional 1/8th scale (that's not based an a wider buggy chassis) it does tend to traction roll on high grip surfaces, but if you drive accordingly it's decent.!
With the brushless system it's pretty quick.. I'd say high 40 mph ish.
I'm very concerned about it's long term durability though... It's certainly nowhere near as well made as something like a Hobao.!
For £289 there are better RCs out there..!
Overall I'm a little disappointed...
Though, I do still like it... A bit.! 😉 😉 But I certainly can't recommend it.!

@tomleyrc man that would deserve another video on gravel tyres with scale rims driven somewhere which looks more like a realistic rally path

I like the way it jumps and the rear suspension tucks under acceleration, it looks so good!
The front always lifts under heavy load on road going UR quattros and the rally cars where even more dramatic. Just how it should be IMO. 👍
At £290 over at Modelsport, it's not a terrible price. But the Maverick Quantum RX Flux 4S 1/8 4WD Rally Car at £224 is a much better deal. Both come with crap radio gear but a DumboRC can be installed to significantly improve range and response for £30. I don't think the Carisma offers enough to consider purchasing one.
I'd argue that the Delta Integrale or Stratos are a tad more iconic, but hey, if you like heavy Audi's, good for you! ;)
It’s really a question of which era of rally you gravitate too.
Id argue that the quattro is the most iconic Group B car. The stratos was a decade earlier and essentially a group 4 car (not group B) and the delta ran in group N later on after the demise of group B.
On the topic of quattros being heavy the S1E2 quattro only weighed 1040 kg so no real difference at all to a delta in that regard.
The problem with the Delta and the Stratos was that at the end of each stage they had to repair all the rot 😅. Anyway… all the 80’s and early 90’s Rally cars were cool

That loose surface action looked absolutely brilliant, great driving/filming! Perfect lack of grip! Its a difficult car to model, even the real thing looks completely wrong...... A great effort & top marks for a classic rally car subject. More please Carisma! I never even knew they did a Porsche 959, discontinued now I think? Another superb subject.

I don't think many people worry about the radio these things come with. Wish they wouldn't come with any. People buying these always end up using their own radios. I love my rally cars. I'm going to add a few of these to my collection. Thanks for the excellent review, Phil.

It’s a shame that they supplied a copy of a standard UR quattro’s road car wheel rather than the Gravel Speedlines that Audi sport actually used back in the day.

The 959 is quicker than the Impreza version and is a really durable platform. They are pretty hard to find now but i somehow ended up with four of them…

Also I'm buying my dad one of these he's loves Audi we put a motor in an Audi 200 from our little shed when I was a kid the turbo 5 cylinder, and it did 150 mph wouldn't have passed EU tests though..
Oh wow, is that Alvaston BMX track next to the R Derwent? Used to race that track, was my local, before this it was at the old Derby Greyhound track (County Gaol) Some summer events we would ride and jump the bikes into the river.

When you first squeezed the throttle in the garage and I saw it squat, I was nearly punching the air going "Yes!!" because that's of course how they actually were. The body roll looks so good on camera even.

Just ordered it. Hopefully it's the same scale as the Radio Shack Audi I bought when I was 14. That one has the white 5 spoke wheels! 🤔 I may swap as the Ur Quattro has spoked wheels from factory!
I think a piece of cut-off Lexan may prevent body damage from tire contact? Especially since the arches on this model are so flat, it should be easy to source.

Yep. Ken was an icon and innovator but only from the mid 2000’s onwards (I still watch his gymkhana’s regularly and loved watching him compete in RX) but back In The golden era of group B, rallying was bigger than F1 and televised every single weekend along with European rallycross.
@@Zermattquattro Keyword European. Outside of that, nobody had any idea Rallying even existed. And people probably still wouldn't if it wasn't for Ken.
The cars ran 5 spoke (Dymag?) alloys in period, in tarmac spec. Deep dished, wider on the rear than the front. They ran different wheels in gravel spec.
The quattros never ran staggered rims at all. They ran speedline magnesium alloys for gravel and BBS for tarmac stages. The very early cars ran fuch rims and again speedlines but never dymag.
@@Zermattquattro, well, there you go then. You must be even more ancient than me. I only have experience of seeing them in period and know a bloke who owns several Group B UR Quattros.
@@Zermattquattro, Anyhoo, the point of my post was that the wheels on the RC car don't match either the gravel or tarmac rims the actual cars ran in period. I have seen Quattros run staggered rims since their Group B heydey.

@@cogboy302 well we will have to disagree as you are very much wrong.
WRT this RC model you are partially correct in that they are not competition rims as they have simply fitted a copy of the Ronal R8 which was standard equipment on road cars from 1983.5 model year onwards, the sport quattro road car ran a 9J version of the 8J rim and the earlier road cars a 6J version too.
So to what you incorrectly stated-
Firstly you stated that they ran dymag wheels (used on metro 6r4’s) which they categorically didn’t and secondly all group B quattros ran a 50/50 split in power between front and back with no advantage whatsoever to running wider rear rims.
The quattro has/had to much mechanical grip even with the above setup so why would they then add additional rubber to make it even worse at getting loose? They even went to the extreme of removing 320mm from the wheel base of the A2 quattro to make the sport quattro (S1) to try to counter grip and give quicker turn in and manoeuvrability.
So with all due respect you are very much mistaken but do by all means reply with info to back up your statement such as name/date of rally, driver, which stage you saw such a setup and I will happily look it up in the journals and cross reference it with actual homologation paperwork for that particular rally.
@@cogboy302 what’s age got to do with being factually correct?. I still own two UR quattros and have been involved with them since the mid 90’s having restored/built up a number of cars with the correct period parts and prior to that (the catalyst you could say) following the WRC around the UK back in 1984/5 with my father.
BTW there is no one in the UK now that owns several ex works quattro but I believe I know who you are alluding too and if it’s the same Mancunian he now runs a replica of the 1983 A2 quattro and a 100S4 having parted company with most of his collection and BTW none of his quattros ever ran staggered rims.

Hi Phil, nice bit of kit that Audi rally. Do you remember the Colin McMae rally game, they had group B rally cars, the Peugeot T16, the metro, and Renault 5 2 turbo. But the most bonkers was the audi. Great video always 😊
The ctx8000 transmitter has pretty bad range. I have one and it also cuts out once you get about 75 feet away. It probably needs to go tbh cuz anything faster than that and that little transmitter bubble is too small.
Sucks cuz I honestly quite like the oversized wheel.
Plenty of grip on Tarmat, the tyres dont last long though

I love the 80's quattro sport, it is one of the best cars of all time i wish they kept making them. I really might get this one.
group b rally was banned after a incident in 1992 were a 1992 ford escort rs2200 cosworth came off the track and struck those their to view the race, rally rules were so loose deaths were not uncommon, but this crash was particularly bad due to the death count and the outrages out put of the crashing car.

The wheels did sit inside the arches like that on the real car, maybe even further in than on the RC.

Phillips is a name brand. like crescent. most people call thumb wrenches, crescent wrenches.
Philips is the correct term for a type of crosshead screw rather than a name brand. JIS, Pozidriv & 1 or 2 others are also crosshead screws.

It's a great looking car and showed decent speed. The soft setup seem to work well. With all the jumps you did I expected more damage. I enjoyed the different on board camera shots.
