The "would you kindly?" twist reveal is one of the great, classic video game moments. It's very interesting because not only is it part of the plot, but it also allows the gamer to question "choice" and how much of it a gamer really has when they play. This would be examined further in games like (recommended) The Stanley Parable
Btw, the voice actor for Atlas was not told in advance about the "would you kindly?" thing. The developers felt that if he knew, he might subconsciously put extra emphasis on the line whenever he delivered it

Glad you got to experience the twist unspoiled lol, it still works all these years later. This was 2007 too! wild.

    "Would you kindly?"
The reveal is fantastic, most players know something is amiss, and a lot of players know not to fully trust Atlas, but the "Would you kindly" reveal followed by Fontaine's reveal is mind-boggling nonetheless.
And the best thing about it is that you can connect all the dots through all the diaries in the game, it all starts to make sense, and that's the power of incredible environmental storytelling, it was all perfectly executed. This last stretch of the game when everything comes together is what truly elevates this game to "great" status.
Ryan and Fontaine are obviously both terrible people, but Andrew Ryan is such a standout character. Atlas/Fontaine is great as well, but Andrew Ryan's philosophy and ideologies (albeit hypocritical) are incredibly fascinating and his dialogues are fantastic, so many great quotes, and the delivery is equally fantastic

if you looked at Ryan's vita chamber in his office, it was turned off. pretty certain Ryan flat out wanted to die.

He is a man of total control imprisoned in his water dungeon. He could not get out with a bathysphere without being blown up or killed by splicers. So even over his own death he had the total reigns.

What a neat detail, I was wondering about that too, whether or not Ryan was out there somewhere. Gonna check out his vita chamber now

1:14:40 He wanted to emphasize the fact that Jack is a slave who was just doing as he was told.
"A man chooses, a slave obeys."
He chose to die, whereas Jack didn't choose to kill him, he was merely obeying his orders. He wanted to prove a point, but he also knew that Rapture was lost at that point, and seeing everything he built be completely ruined like that must've left him feeling defeated.
And when he realised that his own child was his undoing by way of obeying his biggest enemy's orders, he accepted his fate. If it wasn't gonna be him, it was gonna be Fontaine later.
Maybe a part of him also hoped that some part of Jack would push to break free of his shackles and *choose* to fight Fontaine

Jack (the main character) is only 2 years old, if that helps with the time line. They only sped up the first 20 years of his life, so he ages normally now.

Jack being mute is just a typical video game thing rather than him actually being mute. A lot of first person games used to do this, partly to also allow the players to put themselves in their shoes. I personally like having a set protagonist with their own dialogues, but yeah, there's no particular narrative reason for him being mute.
Such a fantastic episode, so much happened in this one, loved hearing your thoughts, and you guys were wary of a lot of things, and had some really interesting theories, some of which were pretty close too! As always, looking forward to hearing your thoughts for the rest of the playthrough

I think in this case, he being mute also works for the narrtive deconstruction of linear games they are doing here, with the 'Would you kindly?' stuff.

1:15:34 Yeah he did know, but he only realised it towards the end, he didn't know who he was before that and was trying to figure that out. When he figured out who Jack was, he wanted to let him know the truth of who he was whilst also proving a point, he didn't want to control him at this point, esp after Rapture was already lost

  • @Bram25

Funny enough it is kind of foreshadowed. In Neptune Bounty, first area under the dock lies an audio diary where a man complains he and others cannot travel by bathysphere as it is reserved only for Andrew Ryan and the elite of Rapture.
But (he also mentions) that it is a key tied to DNA so it can also be run by an aunt, or his mom or anyone carrying his DNA. 😨🤯😱
(which would also mean Jack could use it all that time!)

This is my favorite video game! In regards to if Ryan knew that Jasmine sold her baby to Tenebaum, I’ve always thought of that would you kindly room as Ryan just then figuring out everything about Jack and Fontaine and Atlas, and throwing the kill switch for rapture because of it.
I’m so happy that the plot twist wasn’t spoiled for you guys! I’m on my way to watch the rest of the playthroughs.

Ryan realized it would be his own child who was a brainwashed slave was going to kill him so he just kind of gave up and chose to die. After all, what parent would want to be killed by their own child who hasn't ever had a life of their own. At least, that's my reading of the scene. Are you guys planning to playthrough the bioshock trilogy? If you are make sure to play Minerva's Den DLC in Bioshock 2 and Burial At Sea 1 and 2 from Infinite.

The upside down question mark picture was clearly meant to cover your image, but the other tacks were removed and the question mark was spun out of the way to reveal your picture. It was meant to show how you're just now discovering who you truly are. Personally, I think adding that detail was a mistake, and they should've kept the question mark photo over your face. It takes some of the sting from Ryan's speech and the twist.

I totally called it! Well the Fontaine/Atlas part, didn't guess the mind control or being Ryan's child... Would Tenenbaum still save you if you harvested the little sisters? Has anyone felt cruel enough to do that?
