Zootopia’s deleted polar bear shock collar initiation party. At one point during the making of the film the APEX predators were given shock collars to keep them in check and there was a scene whe there is said shock collar initiation party where a polar bear cub gets it’s own shock collar and I gets slightly too excited and he gets shocked and you see the joy completely disappear from his face ending with both the father and the cub look at each so sadly. I mean could you imagine how horrible that situation would’ve been the cub learns that this is his life now and the father is having to watch and practically just accept that it’s now his son’s life now too.

I know Scar’s original death in “The Lion King” was a lot more grizzly. He was originally planned to defeat Simba by throwing him off the ledge of Pride Rock, laughing maniacally as the flames of the wildfire consumed him. While gruesome, I’m kinda glad they went with the more satisfactory ending in the final version.
I recall there being a particularly dark deleted scene in “Mulan” where, during the Huns’ invasion of that one mountain village, one of the soldiers takes pity for a pet bird trapped in a burning building and rescues it. Shan Yu is aware of this selfless act of disobedience and tells him to release it, only for his falcon to kill the bird before he brutally stabs the solider through the chest with his sword, declaring to his army that there is no tolerance for weakness. I can see why this was a little too much.
Though probably the most dark scene that was removed from a Disney animated film was probably the original version of Bambi’s mother’s death. In the final film, we never see her death onscreen, but the original had her slowly limp along and eventually succumb to her fatal wound, collapsing to the ground as the snow around her body turned red and Bambi begs her to get back up. If this sounds at all familiar to you, that’s because Don Bluth lifted this same exact scene for Littlefoot’s mother in “The Land Before Time” - albeit toning down the blood.
That wasn’t the only dark scene that was deleted in “Bambi”, however. One other scene had the unseen hunter actually die, with the grown up Bambi stumbling across his charred remains, having perished to the flames of the forest fire he inadvertently created. This was a scene lifted from the original novel, where Bambi makes the realization that mankind wasn’t a god like the hound dog claimed, but a mortal creature just like everyone else.

I dunno if it counts as a dark scene, but it is messed up in its racial implications. There's a deleted scene in Lilo and Stich that made it to rough pencil animation where we are shown how Lilo is treated by the white tourists on a daily basis, some treating her as just another Hawaiian attraction for being a "real native". She's shown going to the beach right before a tsunami siren test, telling the tourists she's calling for a giant tsunami to come after them and to "prepare to die." The tourists hear the siren, they panic, and Stitch laughs at the situation. It's just a great scene that exemplifies Lilo as an outsider not just among her peers but on her own land by the tourists. It's likely why she takes pictures of them, because of how tourists would take pictures of her. It's also a bonding moment with Stitch as he sees her create chaos for her own amusement and to retaliate against the tourists.

I get the feeling the Pudge scene was taken out because even though Stitch starts the story as a villain and he would've had that moment of realization afterwards, it runs the risk of taking Stitch beyond a moral event horizon. Stitch laughing as Lilo tries in vain not to let her beloved fish get pecked to death might have a chance of making Stitch too unlikable.

The body horror in cars when McQueen runs into a graveyard when trying to find his way back to the interstate only to crash into a yard of dead cars that are decaying. He ends up driving and getting tangled in parts and wire only to pull a jaw off a dead car and the metal to screech and McQueen to dash out of there. Like wtf was up lol so much body horror. What disturbs me the most is if you imagine this as people it would be the equivalent to stumbling into corpses decomposing in the ground and hanging from trees to be panicking and running out of there to get entangled in their body and feel and see the horrific display of death consuming the once was person with a soul and a life only to be forgotten and rotting. I think that deleted Wall-E scene should’ve made it, even if it had to be tweaked. Having that recording be Auto’s motivation to keep the humans in space indefinitely would’ve made him a lot more interesting. BnL not being able to clean it up initially already happens anyway, considering their robots all rust away besides one, so I don’t think showing the initiative being unable to catch up with the damage they caused in the projected time really “ruins” anything about the film considering the earth is eventually able to be saved.

    • @grey-spark
      @grey-spark Před 25 dny +2

I disagree, while you are correct that BnL was not being able to 'put the toothpaste back in the tube' and that still works for the film, but the scene still would have ruined Auto's character and the movie's message.
Auto's control comes from complacency, not fear. If we lived in a alternate universe where green tech was dangerous and that's why we weren't using it. Then yes, Auto being motivated by fear would make sense. But in reality we don't use green tech because we're lazy and that laziness is what empowers Auto. So yeah, it would ruin the message a little.
I'll go further and add that Auto's motivation in the final cut is instead an impersonal "Must follow my directive". He's almost the embodiment of the corporate profit motive. Corporations are not good or evil, rather they're soulless entities that just need to make profit, and like Auto, keep humanity captured in a capitalist paradise. And both corporations and Auto are incapable to saving the planet if it goes against their core directive.

Interesting to see like the lorax biggering song where it absolutely changes the entire film with just one scene.
Stitch one I can see still work with a random fish not the family fish to give stich some wiggle room to grow.
Snug yeah would have been very dark but not seeing the body and changing it to dash immediately using his speed power to leave with the group could have left that possible end ambiguous for audiences.

I think the Cars deleted scene was intended to be played off as funny. But then cut because it was too weird. The reason why I say this is because of another movie the staff worked on, The Brave Little Toaster.
There is a scene in that film where all of the characters (who are talking furniture by the way) walk into a part shop and it is framed like a horror movie like you see the shadows of a man tearing everything up with a screwdriver and oil dripping like blood. After the chilling and disturbing sequence they immediately cut to a musical number, making fun of horror movies in the fifties.
That and there were a lot of scenes that had Lightning McQueen with weird/comedic dreams such as the one where the cow wins the race

I am so glad those disturbing delayed scenes did not make it in, they would've traumatized me and a lot of other people as kids.
I remember when I was a kid and owned the DVD version of Cars, I saw the deleted scenes with the graveyard and body horror, but I was completely unfazed when my kid self watched them. Looking back, they were very disturbing and I'm glad they did not make it in the final cut.
The concept of the deleted graveyard scene from Cars was later used in a Cars short titled The Radiator Springs 500 1/2. The premise of the short is that the residents of Radiator Springs were celebrating their town's founder, but then four racers known as the Badja Pros come in and challenge Lightning McQueen to a race. During the final part of the race, McQueen and the Badja Pros find themselves in the Enchanted Forest at night, which became a graveyard filled with old car corpses, and the racers get the scare of a lifetime. They do manage to escape and return to Radiator Springs.

Wall-E's deleted scene is just a silly reference to a Star Trek episode that didn't made sense on the long run because the final movie doesn't have William Shatner as the president.
The "I wanna live!" line is an infamous dialogue from a Star Trek TOS episode in which Captain Kirk gets seprated into two versions of himself, one more sensible and one more agressive. As all great Star Trek episodes do, they explore the moral dilema of the independant existance of these two beings, and by the end of the episode it is decided to join them to form the real Captain Kirk again, to the absolute horror of the evil Kirk who (regardless of being an ass) is still a living being who wants to live as an independant being. The line was memed to death back in the day and during old-school internet too.
The storyboards in Wall-E use William Shatner's likeness as a constant standin for the president, and they even did somewhat of an impersonation of him for those scenes. So it's very posible to assume they wanted Shatner for that small role. The line is also treated as a reference, as it doesn't draw that much attention to itself.
Maybe executives thought it came across as too dark regardless of it being a silly referece, maybe it was just a stand-in for the development process (because the artists were big nerds of ST) and it was never meant to be final, or maybe none. I'm just impressed that absolutely none of the people I've seen covering these animated storyboards has ever catched the reference.

Pinocchio had a deleted scene where Geppetto and Figaro are in Montro and originally instead of simply not being able to catch anything they were trying to figure out what to do for good and to the point they begin to wonder about eating Cleo since they are starving. They both had very creepy expressions like as if enjoying the idea but Geppetto snaps back to his senses and what not and apologizes for scaring Cleo. I mean I am not too sure if I think it should be in the movie or not but I can understand why. Walt probably thought the scene was way too dark and disturbing since well it gives of the idea of someone being so hungry to the point where they are almost willing at eating their own pet which is a part of their family. I had no idea about it until I saw a video talking about dark deleted scenes from Disney movies. years ago. It was pretty shocking I am not going to lie about that.

  • @tidepoolclipper8657

Other deleted or lost scenes would be:
Cars: Lightning McQueen coming across a graveyard of rusty cars while lost. Partly was reused for The Radiator Springs 500 1/2.
Cars 3: Lighting McQueen watching Doc's final moments after racing him. Doesn't help it was a dark time for Lighting's actor.
The Black Cauldron: A guard being painfully melted to bone. Yes, really. The scene mostly remains lost.
Lilo and Stitch: The scene of Jumba chasing Stitch through the house made it into the final product, but the darker aspects were modified. The infamous moment of Lilo nearly getting killed by a chainsaw understandably was not kept in. Jumba's multipurpose device was originally much more dangerous looking. He also used to look on-model. The famous hot potato scene was a late addition. Originally Stitch tore open the house's methane pipe and held it out in the open. Also, the house caught on fire as a result of that.
Lion King: Scar prepared to r**e Nala. A modified version of the scene is in the Broadway musical.
Lion King 2: Zira intentionally committing suicide. The part of her smiling as she falls was kept, though.
Zootopia: There are two shock collar scenes. One where Nick is clearly the main character (as opposed to Judy) and fantasizes while the collar is off. The other being darker where a kid receives his shock collar. The later is a powerful scene, but it's understandable why there were heavy rewrites.
Alice in Wonderland: Alice's execution. A strange scene is Pig and Pepper. There's also the very infamous unused Jabberwocky.
Pinocchio: Gepetto considers eating the pet fish.
Tarzan: The first I'm mentioning is not that messed up, but originally the final battle was going to take place on a boat and Clayton would've died there. The later however is quite messed up. The father of Tarzan would've been killed by Sabor onscreen.
Mulan: Shuan Yu destroys a village and kills a man of his for hiding the canary. Was actually mostly deleted to have more focus on Mulan.
Finding Nemo: Not really a deleted scene, but the annoying girl at the dentist was originally going to be sadistic; especially as she tried to bite the dentist in a less goofy fashion. One that is lost, however, is the barracuda carrying Nemo's dead mother.
Toy Story: Woody's nightmare in Toy Story 2 was inspired by a more nightmare inducing version that went unused for the original. It also explains the nightmare Buzz fight on the first Toy Story game.
Toy Story 3: Back when Circle 7 was in charge, the story was drastically different. Some concept art involved Buzz almost being crushed alive by the disposal unit.
Monster's Inc: The scene of Mike and Sully escaping from Harryhausen's arguably ended up being creepier in the final product, but originally the building straight up got destroyed in fiery fashion.

It's not really a deleted scene but an early version of Monster's Inc in story board that was on the Extras DVD disc.
There was a scene where an early version of Sully had an apartment by himself and had a nosey landlord who had tentacle like eyes. To keep it short, the end of the story board had an announcement over the news that there was a human girlbin the monster world aka Boo. The landlord sees this an she knows that Sully upstairs lives alone but heard 2 voices upstairs before (landlord lives directly below him). So the landlord just extended her eyes into the ventilation system looking for Boo. I remember there's a specific scene Boo hides behind the kitchen counter and the eyes are just around the corner.
That scarred me for quite a bit as a kid

think it's for the better snug got cut as the film did have a small issue of the 1st half mostly being more mr. incredible's story that it would've been much trying to have another character only for him to just die halfway,it makes no sense at all the kids going to a dangerous island when helenn's shown to be a good reasonable mother compared to them stowing away making it when the story gets intense and the story has enough stakes as we don't need death every second to show the world's danger as syndrome aiming at kids(with the guards having no issue trying to outright kill dash & violet/celebrating the omnidroid endangering people.)/the tons of super heroes that died at his hands is enough to be one of if not still the darkest pixar film.
while wall-e's is interesting it does go against the point of buy n large(that with how it's gotten cameos in other pixar films does give a creepy undertone that it's the future of those films worlds/a future film showing it's start.) alongside makes the ending feel like an inevitable hopeless downer(that test audiences felt what little life we saw onscreen wouldn't bring earth back to normal that they fixed showing more ships arriving/more plant life around.)as it feels less like the earth getting so polluted it became inhospitable and more it caused to planet to break apart in a kind of gaia's vengeance or something horrible awakening from all the chaos like it caused the robots to go skynet/darker sorcerer's apprentice destroying earth.(after the scene got a pampers ad of a baby crying which 100% would've been children's reactions to this scene.)

    1. They should have left the fish scene in. They should have change the plane to a ship, not only because of 9-11, but because it also it makes more sense. These are aliens.
    2. It made sense to cut it. To much time would have been needed to set it up right, and the movie is already intense as it is. Also I don't remember the movie really dealing with civilian/superhero interactions in regards to civilian roles in the Superhero world. So that would have been a whole other kettle that would have needed time.
    3. Dude that's a bridge to far. That's multiple bridges to far.
    4. That's Brave Little Toaster horror levels.

Nowadays I find it a bit interesting because death isn’t really tackled in the cars world?? Like they have dead characters like the one cars husband or Hudson I think, but we don’t know how it works?? Is it just their engines that go out?? Are their engines their hearts? Their brains? Can cars get sick?? How old can cars live to??
I honestly think the most interesting thing about cars is how the world itself works but they don’t explore it, they just do dumb stuff 💀
