That yellow dress that lady Jessica wears is breathtakingly beautiful, heck, I wanna get married in it lol!
It's stunning.
In Regency England the flavoured colour for wedding gowns was yellow.
I love the yellow but the face chains didn't work for me!!!
If they had been smaller and more proportional than the clunky one I might have liked it.
it threw me out of the plot for most of the scene.
I'm obsessed with that scene of Lady Jessica with the golden dress and the yellow veil swinging in the air when she arrives on Arrakis, so beautiful. Can't wait to see it at the theater
Thank you so much for commenting! I think you will love all of her costumes.
I'm pretty certain Atreideis wear armour when they land on Dune as a show of military strength to the Imperial observers. This is their first moment on the planet and official hand-off so they have to do the whole pomp and ceremony so all the men are in battle armour and Jessica and her handmaids are in intricate gowns to show wealth.
But Paul isn't.
I was looking for this comment. The armor wasn’t functional, it was pageantry. The men were in military garb, representing strong, potent masculinity. The women were opulent and beautiful, representing the fullness well-provided for and protected femininity. The “Prince” (Paul) isn’t military yet so he’s dressed as a noble youth, not quite yet a man.
That scene was all about pageantry, ceremony, putting on a show. The costuming made sense to me.
A lot of the different Bene Gesserit garb looked more like Eastern Orthodox nuns, and the brocade worn by the Guild and Judge of the Change was Byzantine style Phelonia
Yes! Why is it nobody realises that the reverend mother looks like a great schema Russian orthodox nun.
My family and I are Eastern Orthodox and one of the first things my dad said as we were leaving the theater is that the Bene Gesserits reminded him of Orthodox nuns 😂
A Star Wars-inspired costume in a Dune film is only logical, since George Lucas ripped off a lot of ideas and concepts from Dune for Star Wars. It's only fair to turn this into a mutual exchange, no?
Well yes of course. But also John Mollo was a military historian and brought that to Star Wars from his own knowledge.
@@Costume_CO Yes! All these diverse influences on costume and set design are so fascinating! Like how in David Lych's 1980's Dune, the interior of the Atreides palace is reminiscent of the interior of old wooden sailing ships (because Calladan is rich in water), which is an architectural curiousity you still find in old churches or manorhouses in the Netherlands ( a major seafaring nation , especially in the old colonialist days). The Harkonnen Sadukar soldier uniforms in Villeneuve's new Dune look like futuristic SS uniforms, which is totally on point thb...
The images used to the similarity between the clothing made me laugh, because the way Jessica looks in that image made me think of The Emperor rather than Padme
@@gozerthegozarian9500
The Sci-Fi channel’s miniseries of “Dune” and “Children of Dune” had eccentric costumes for the noble houses that drew inspiration from different cultures and timelines. They ironically reminded me a lot of Queen Amidala’s costumes from the “Star Wars” prequels.
The costumes from the Sci-Fi channel’s “Dune” miniseries have been criticized for being so out there. But I thought they were a lot of fun.
The armour they wore made perfect sense both in ceremonial terms &the fact that they were embarking upon a new planet &were very cautious of the reception theyd receive hence the security detail &his mentat making sure they were clear to take off etc
Also more specifically shields drive the great worms crazy so they HAD to use "normal" armour at the space port
Didn't work for me.
Lady Jessica's hooded cape somewhat more closely resembles Padmè Narberrie's hooded cape with abstract animalistic print worn in episode 2 in shape, size and draping. That costume piece was also worn in a desert setting)))
But in the movie the hood is fully gathered into the seam exactly like Leia.
@@Costume_CO well, I'll see that when the film will finally be released in my country
+ Associations and resemblance are pretty subjective so I didn't mean to be disrespectful or rude
++ Btw, thanks for your work, your videos about costumes in films and series are the most thoughtful and detailed
@@KhalideKashmiri none taken at all... There was a lot going on and I had very little time to take note of what was happening on screen. I need to see it again.
So I really want to cosplay the Black hooded dress that Lady Jessica wears. Apparently when you wear it you can disappear into the room. I just need close up's of the cut and seams... Construction is what I need to know about since it's simple black silk
Love those dark green near to black jackets. I want to buy one. In the book House Atreides is a minor house in the Landsraad. A simple style of clothing, nothing opulent. Functional for the water cold climate. Caladan is shot in Norway and that makes sense.
Pretty sure there will be a rush to make these jackets for the public. 😊
The Atreides were a Major House, not a minor one.
Regarding the Sardaukar battlefield colors, I got this from the DuneWiki page.
During the Harkonnen attack on planet Arrakis when it was under the control of House Atreides, Sardaukar troops were provided by Emperor Shaddam IV to assist the Harkonnens. Even though the Sardaukar forces were disguised in Harkonnen livery, the Atreides managed to recognize the Sardaukar by their combat style and often hawk-like features.
I hope that helps, but it might have been just a style choice made by Denis Villeneuve.
Thank you. 😊
I've only seen the film once at this point so may not be 100% on this but I thought the armour only appeared in one scene when they arrived on Dune. I assumed it was being worn for ceremonial purposes. As were Jessica and Paul's outfits in that scene. Jessica's was exquisite but so impractical. But then I remembered how important protocol and ceremony was to Jessica's character and gave the director another silent thank you for getting the small details right.
Yes, that's exactly when it is but it didn't work for me.
@@Costume_CO they just didn't need it.
I think we should be careful about assuming that in the far future, costumes will be radically different simply due to technology; with the story of Dune, this is even more important because of the story's imagined history in respect of the culture's relationship to technology. Throughout history, fashions have reimagined themselves and most of it is a reworking of retro styles and designs, just as it is today. Those people have highly effective personal shields and would probably go for comfort which means one thing to an aristocrat and another to a desert dweller. Form follows function in this case. They also have strong taboos against computerisation and AI, hence the very advanced development of mental and physical attributes like the mentats, the Bene Gesserit, and other groups. The costumes in the both Lynch and the Villeneuve movies are excellent. Nothing to complain about there.
I haven't seen the film yet but based on what we have so far, I personally love the costume design overall. But IMO the Noble Houses could've used more subtle bits of color. I imagined their respective house heraldry and colors to be more present in their uniforms and armor (but without going overboard), especially since they expect a lot of close quarters combat and in those situations friend and foe need to be easily recognizable. Thinking about how the film's already knightly-looking Atreides battle armor could be even more distinct with some dark green and red accents, maybe a hawk symbol on there as well. Then for the Harkonnens, some blue to break-up the monotony of their all-black armor. I feel like their team could've made it work while sticking to the muted, minimalist look that Denis Villeneuve is going for.
I feel a bit harsh for writing this much but I swear these just are minor nitpicks. I still love the designs. And I can't wait to see the film!
Great comment Ultra!
Totally agree with you in every regard, including the hype for the movie
@Ultra, Perfect comment. I agree with you completely!
4:11 There's no way you're telling me Jessica looks like Leia there. If anything, she's dressed like a fucking sith lord.
Hi appa, I am refering to the silhouette of the gown and the gathering of the hood.
The yellow dress and how it flows was so beautifully captured. The face necklace was high end fashion imo
Thank you for commenting!
Dune is in a post technological era. Where outfits are made not from factory machinery but from humans hands since all machine that resemble logic are banned. Thats just my interpretation
Thanks Skuma!
Read the appendix in the back of the first Dune book. It's the software that's banned, not the machine.
"Thou shalt not make a machine in the likeness of a human mind" Likeness of the human mind is referring to software. There are plenty of machines in Dune, just not software enabled.
The rare times they wear armor is for example when they arrive on Arrakis, their arrival could be ambushed, hence the armor. A leader’s arrival on a new hostile planet is a moment of tension.
Probably will be the only movie I see in the theatres. Even after getting the vaccine and having Covid after that I don’t want to encourage indoor gatherings. The reason I’m so excited is that it has been given the attention this book deserves. The fact that Frank Herbert is from Tacoma WA has a little to do with it too.
You will love it and please see it on the big screen.
Also, I didn't know that you had Covid. I hope you are fully recovered and that your family is healthy.
ah! I CANNOT WAIT TO SEE LADY JESSICA'S CHAIN VEIL AND GOLD DRESS
❤️
I have observed that Villeneuve and his art department did acknowledge many of the classic dune illustrations ... which i think was a great choice! Herbert himself praised John Schoenherrs Works very highly.
DUNE has been part of my life since i was 6 years old, cant wait IMAX experience for me.
Yes, you have to watch it that way. I can wait to see it again.
Watched this film then went and bought 4 yards of cotton gauze to make those gorgeous shawls the Fremen wear 😍
They talk about this novel a lot in the book world. I love seeing the costume breakdown.
Thanks so much Scully's!
Thank you for this commentary- I love the fremen women's brown mesh gauzy scarves .also the bluish ones. The golden outfit of lady Jessica was the best!
Thanks for the link in your Dune part 2 video as I missed this video the first time around.
I hope you enjoyed it!
Enjoyed the movie and costumes, I want to know if you gave any information about what shoes Jessica was wearing, it is a platform????
Just got back from one of the early European premieres. I'm glad I subscribed to you a while back, this video is like the perfect dessert after a full course sci-fi dinner.
Thanks Adam, what did you think?
@@Costume_CO I went in almost blind, no books, just the trailers and various marketing material. It met and exceeded my expectations. I got completely lost in its world in ways I hadn't expected. The way the camera lingered on places, faces... even animals in the same way a documentary would.
I wrote down some of the first thoughts that came to my head after seeing it, and I noticed they were mostly visual. I think the story and characters may not resonate with mainstream audiences the same way a film like Fellowship of the Ring did, at least not until part 2, and I do hope people support the film and that they're curious enough to stick around for the payoff. Fans of the books will probably walk out with an even bigger grin on their faces than me, and I _loved_ it.
I'm looking forward to repeat viewings; keeping my eyes locked on the costumes and studying every corner of every environmental shot.
Amazing Adam, thank you for sharing. I will definitely watch it multiple times.
Great review, great content. The costumes for me were stand out, and the scene depicting the arrival of House Atreides on Arrakis was simply stunning. I particular liked Lady Jessica's Moorish inspired outfit. Please excuse the correction, but at 6:18, I think you meant paramilitary, not parliamentary...
Thanks Kevin, that's exactly what I meant to say. Cheers, Heidi.
one of the reasons the Atreides wear armor is purely for visual propaganda and projecting a "strong" image upon the people of Arrakis. practically, when they arrive on Arrakis they have every reason to fear Harkonnen attacks or possible resistance from angry Fremen who could theoretically try to injure them from a distance or in a sudden attack due to the tyranny and cruelty of the last ruling house, the Harkonnens. Just my 2 cents since I've read the book.
Also Harkonnen is pronounced "Har-KOH-nen"
Hi Rey, I know that is the take some viewers have but it didn't work for me. Thank you for commenting.
Love the vídeos and your thoughts about the film. Just here to say congratulations and thank u 💖

I am obsessed with your channel!
Thanks so much Jon!
The Fremen stillsuit should have been made of the skin of the worm. There are references in the book about this.
I think it's supposed to be. I'll have more on it in another video.
That's a new one on me. I've read the series more than a few times, and never picked up on that. I'll keep an eye out for that detail next reading. Do you happen to remember which book, and where?
@@jimclark2824 The only thing I remember is that I this was the case for some special members of the Fremen and not all of them. I recently came across this written info under a You Tube video dealing with the movie Dune. I loved the idea somehow.
@@sweetloveelmo ughhhh skin of the worm? That's nasty
I am VERY MUCH looking forward to seeing Dune! I loved the books when they were first published and I watched the first movie with great interest. I felt at the time that if you hadn't read the book, you would have no clue what was happening in the movie! And now I'm wondering if I should reread the book before seeing THIS movie! I love your costume analysis and am excited for the next one!
Thanks Ann, I think you could wait to see it or read the book first. I think it might be a bit confusing if you haven't read the books at at all or if you hadn't seen the Lynch version. Thanks for commenting.
Although excited for the film, I'm really not liking some of the aesthetic choices. As described in the books all you really need to do is look at the styles and fashions of the Imperium in Warhammer 40,000 and the Horus Heresy to get an idea.
The loss of armorial heraldry is also disappointing.
Plus the Harkonnens...
They appear too much like the Tielaxu for my taste.
Hi Jaymis, I appreciate your comment. I'm not familiar with those references. Are they video games?
As a follower and a lover of the series since I was in my teens, back in the 80's, I agree with you completely on your costume critiques. The House Atreides seems the most bulky and impractical for any real fighting, especially with their shields and the Katanas were completely out of place too. Katanas are slashing swords and completely useless against shields. Only the slow penetration gets through. Ceremony or not, they should have been streamlined for movement, better choice of swords as well as colors. To me, they just look like the armor from an unrealistic video game, just like armor on women with ginormous separate breast plates creating a weakness right between the breasts and fighting in heels, nvm how impossible it is to swing and use a sword with huge breasts or breast plates. The Harkonnens? Idk wth happened there and their bright red hair, lol. The BG outfits were a much better fit back in Lynch's Dune. Idk what happened with the Sardaukar. I would like to point out though that in this universe, it was after the Butlerian Jihad and all technology via computers and AI were banned through out the universe. though Ix had some shady stuff going on, lol. I adore the comment in this thread from @Ultra too.
Hmm I must disagree some what on the juse of armor and the weapon they jused. As I can see and personally would like to wear some extra protection when going in battle even whit a shield on. The aded armor makes enemy need to work for the kill as most vital areas are covered in armor so making foes seek weaker spots that comes harder in combat. For the weapon it more on the modern stright tacticool blades, what I remember seeing in the movie there was lot of inserting the blade in the shield and deliver long deep cut as much as stabbing and seem that some of the Atreides like Dunkan was paired whit shorter dagger like blade whit more sharper point compared the longer more cutty shoppy weapon.
I was waiting for the costume videos and information too. It feels like the "contemporary" version of Star wars or any sci-fi tbh. Love their costumes!
Thank you Auntie.
Looks like you might not make separate video dedicated to Bene Gesserit costumes only so I will pour my bitterness here. This face net Gaius Helen Mohiam is sporting is completely wrong lore-wise. Sisters of BG were trained to insightfully observe the surroundings in search of, hidden objects and mechanisms, potential weapons (including improvised ones), all kinds of assassination's devices, and most importantly, to observe every detail of body and face language presented by people around. This technique was called the BG Method. So now imagine what a hindrance that net on Reverred Mother's face would be. Again the 1984' version got it more lore-adherent portraying BG sisters bald as even hair could have been an obstacle for this kind of avid observation.
Thanks for commenting Lan. I hope to get to it in a future video. I appreciate your comment.
Great stilsuit design... with 21st century Oakley Tactical Factory Pilot gloves in a story that takes place 10K years into the future.
Is there a video for the 1984 Dune movie costumes? IMHO, that was the best part of that movie.
Hi Quod, no, but I will do one before part 2 is out. Thank you for commenting.
I’m actually really curious to see if and what they’re gonna do with House Corrino in part 2. Namely the Emperor and Irulan.
Me too!
I can’t wait to see Emperor Shaddam IV, Irulan and Feyd in “Dune Part 2”.
The Arrakis costume is exquisite.
can someone please please PLEASE help me identify the shoes Jessica's wearing with the yellow dress when arriving on Arrakis? I think they showed up for 2 seconds but I'm obsessed now
I'm not sure it was so quick and I have only seen the movie once. I will try to have a closer look once I see it again. 😊
I had wondered about the armor as well. Personal shields are a big part of what shapes both warfare and hand-to-hand combat in Dune. Armor will not protect against lasgun fire, and projectile weapons might still strike a soldier in the head unless they are helmeted. It is good that they went minimalist on Jessica's makeup. The Bene Gesserit are trained to be as alluring as they want to be, rather than depending on cosmetics. Jessica should be just as beautiful wearing a stillsuit as she is when dressed for official functions, much like how Duke Leto and Paul are handsome in anything. The Harkonnens bother me though. I can see that look for their troops, given the heavily-polluted environment of Geidi Prime. But the Baron, Rabban and Feyd are still wealthy Landsraad nobles who make no pretense of relating to commoners or trying to blend in with them.
Thanks for commenting Daniel. I very much appreciate it.
Shields drive worms crazy.. they weren't inside the shield wall (a huge continental rock wall protecting the castle from sandworms.. so they couldn't t use their personal shielding at the space port
@@o-wolf - To reiterate: "Armor will not protect against lasgun fire, and projectile weapons might still strike a soldier in the head unless they are helmeted." If they were going to go the armor route, then they would need to be *fully* armored from head-to-toe. Even then, no guarantees about surviving a hit from a lasgun.
I'm so hype to see this movie! Great video as always!
Thank you so much Devanrealness!
I just realized that the Harkonens (esp in 5:15) look like The strangers in Dark city movie :) And their ships on Arrakis look like giant ticks. I'm pretty sure it was intentional.
I loved Dark City. It appears that they borrowed from a lot of places so you are probably correct. Yes, I also thought their ships looked very bug like. Thank you so much for commenting!
I think the armour was for when they would have to turn their shields off depending if they were concerned about sandworm activity but maintaining defence. Aside from that at a loss havent seen the movie yet but read the books.
I don't want to spoil but there is only one use of armour in the movie and it's not in the desert.
@@Costume_CO All good, then I got nothing.
keep thinking on the baron... i've been trying to analysis his character since the first time i read the book 45 years ago...
Just as a matter of interest have you any fashion training at all?
Hi Paul, yes, I studied costume and worked in theatre and film.
I'm still waiting for the adaption where Vladimir Harkonnen, Jessica, Paul and Alia are all red heads. A rather important detail in the grand scheme of things, at least the mini series gave Vladimir and Paul the same 'I'm annoyed' tick.
What I understand they whated to give far more threat and danger than in the older movies, but I agree the loss of red hair was bit unfortunate in details vise.
Actually, in the book The Baron has reddish short hair. Paul has curly coal-black thick hair just like his father, Duke Leto. Jessica 's hair colour is dark red, namely shiny bronze. Alia's hair colour is same with Jessica, but I think it is a bit darker.
I guess Villeneuve didn’t want the costumes to look conventionally ‘futuristic’
So he made them look conventional period.
😂
I love watching all this custumes
Thank you Amelia!
Pronounced "HAR-ko-nin", not "non". Love this costume analysis though.
Okay, thank you.
I must ask... Is that how it's supposed to be pronounced in English?
I'm a Finn and Vladimir's family name is based on a Finnish surname Härkönen and the e in "-nen" is pronounced same as the e in hen or Ken or send. Honestly curious!
It is pronounced Har ka nen (straight from Herbert's own mouth)

@@Costume_CO Understand that! I really hope it does well enough for them to greenlight part 2
I felt the Fremen costuming was a TOTAL MISS....the Fremen are tribal people and their need of a messianic figure to unite and lead them reinforces that notion....and tribal people wear clothing that indicates their 1. Hunting skills 2. their warrior skills 3. their Clan or Gen affiliation and 4. their status within their tribe as a leader or whatever.
NONE of that is depicted in the movie.,,,and if it had been, it would have helped the movie (not that this great movie needed any help)
But those kinds of differentiation s allude to back stories for each of the characters whether they're speaking parts or just in the background....
Various tribes should have been delineated by differences in clothing type and color so we would get an image of people coming from all over, from far and wide, to follow the Mahdi....
To me, the Fremen looked like somebody bought a million yards of tan and olive drab muslin material and just wrapped people in it.
they looked cookie cutter and not really thought out
Everything in the book had some medieval style, that's why the costumes are not that futuristic
I just read it and I didn't see any reference to that.

What were the SS again?! 😂😬
The Sand Snakes? Sorry, wrong show. 😋
Yeah, she meant paramilitary, not parlimentary. An endearing mistake however...
Perhaps an unpopular opinion, but I was deeply disappointed with the costumes. Not the costumes themselves, they are all very beautiful, interesting, etc. but to me they didn't mean anything, especially Lady Jessica outfits. One of the commentators can't wait to see Lady Jessica's yellow dress at the theater. This dress makes no sense. Lady Jessica just looked uncomfortable wearing this. Seeing how she walked, I was always afraid that one of the veils or parts of the dress would get stuck in a propeller of an ornithopter or any other device. I don't even mention her oriental-inspired jewelry covering her face or the veil that covers her face or the shoes that seemed to be inspired by traditional Japanese footwear. I understand that it is in the distant future and maybe the influences of the different cultures have mixed together, but aesthetically and in terms of meaning it does not work. Apart from the Fremen and Bene Gesserit which have a very distinct look, the Atreides, Harkonnen, Sardaukar are more or less alike. And yes, maybe the Imperial Court and the Spacing Guild would have brought more diversity to that, but we see them too little (and honestly, although there were a few interesting pieces, overall it was pretty ugly). I have the same criticisms for the decor. All beautiful in themselves but they do not reflect the different cultures / civilizations of this universe that I expected. They are all these beautiful monumental blocks.
Hey, thank you for commenting.
